It’s been a rough stretch. Villa need to, in Emery’s words, regain their structure, find their game. Can they do it tomorrow? No idea. But it wouldn’t be a bad time.
And in acknowledgment of the broader context, my pre-match thoughts are all about how Villa find themselves where they are.
Like everyone else, I’ve been bemoaning the restrictions placed on the club, but somehow hadn’t really connected the European dots: UEFA have made it costly to clubs like Villa to be in European competition. Which really means, costly to Premier League clubs without stratospheric turnover. (Credit to Plug for posting the article that gave me the ‘aha’ insight I’d somehow missed.)
So, a conundrum: We can spend a higher ratio of turnover if we’re not in Europe, but we want to be in Europe because that’s where the glory (and some extra money) are to be found. It makes you a ‘big club’. I’ve taken that 70% limit for granted. Not really thought about that separately from just competing domestically.
It really comes down to a not-terribly complicated financial analysis that I’m ill-equipped to perform and leads to what should be an unthinkable question: Are Villa better off not being in Europe for a bit and being able to spend more on squad-building? If the recruitment’s good, we set about replacing the aging core with the younger, more ‘athletic’ players we see elsewhere, and perhaps add the depth required.
Obviously it means the club wouldn’t be able offer Champions or even Europa to prospects, but it might be a necessary reset. It might even be inevitable.
It’s natural to want to stay at the top end and I do. I like seeing us where we’ve been at. But it also means the chasing pack have more to spend. It explains, along with recent ownership changes, why our latest run has been tougher than it would’ve looked on paper. The rules right now are aimed at encouraging competition, but only amongst the also-rans.
Which brings us to a comment I made on the last post, which is that the game is a financial competition with football as the by-product. Not a novel observation by any means, but it’s really hitting home right now. A little more depth (money), a little more quality (money) or even just a little more luck and we wouldn’t be hanging on to our hopes for the season. And it hurts because I’m not just viewing this as one more exciting/disappointing season as a football fan, but as a decidedly amateur accountant trying to figure out how to balance the books with ambition.
And that really is the context of the resumption of Europa League play. There are stakes that have nothing to do with glory, silverware, or joy. We’re really talking about Villa’s paths to staying financially competitive despite having enough money. And by that we’re only saying ‘competitive enough with a brilliant manager and excellent recruiting’.
In footballing terms, yeah, it’s a game Villa need to win. We need to regain confidence and fluidity. We need to somehow see out this period without two very important players. We need to gear ourselves up mentally for the run-in. We need a result. All valid as far as the by-product goes. And on its own, whatever some think of the second-tier European competition, I’d love to see us walk away with some silverware. Which admittedly looked more likely a couple months ago than it does now.
So, it’s quite a juncture in the season, and perhaps in Villa’s arc beyond next season. I know I’m going to be edgy and for more reasons than the football itself. Emery will never admit to prioritizing anything more than the league, but one wonders if the defining choice of his tenure to date will be him relying on his tournament genius to keep us in the bigger overall hunt.
Over to you.
Back to Europe: Lille vs Villa

Cash hasn’t travelled to France,
I would put konsa rightback ,digne would play apart from matasen poor defensive work digne is French
Martinez
Konsa lindorf torres digne
Bogarde onana
Rogers barclay sancho
Abraham
Yeah, could very well be time to give Tammy the start.
The old school dinosaur remedy to our terrible form is “the dogs of war approach”, ie shut up shop, keep it tight, guard that point and half hope for that one breakaway daylight robbery stolen goal. Get that unbeaten run started and wait for a bit of confidence to return. The last effing thing I want to see is the endless recycling across the back line culminating in Konsa pirouetting onto his arse and giving the ball away. I really don’t think our players are currently fit for the Emery school of football science approach. The stage is definately not set for the slagworthy Bailey to travel outside the UK.
Keep It Simple Stupid.
Pirouetting onto his arse…as apt a description as I’ve ever heard.
And a big yes to KISS and shutting up shop.
Yep, the dogs of war approach would suit me just fine. We need to squeeze past Lille. It won’t be easy, our form is off. It is a vital requirement that we’re still in the tie come next week at VP. I must admit to a little nervousness about tomorrow.
Wow the champions league matches, English sides have been thrashed chelsea spurs city, pool still look awful, arsenal getting another shocking var decision in penalty helping them and definitely Newcastle got stung by a poor ref
The English sides have looked poor in their UCL knock out games. Extremely poor. Five of the six games were away from home and opponents were RMA, PSG, Atletico Madrid, Barca, Leverkusen and Galatasaray. Some tough fixtures there. However, I only see 2 English teams at best reaching the quarters, so maybe P5 for a UCL place is not yet battened down.
SJM has travelled to France but Cash has not. Who will Unai play at RB? Might see SJM come on as a sub.
Team sheet
They say doing same thing over again and expecting different results is insanity
Well emery for me looks like he has lost the plot
Have to agree JV. Felt sure he’d start Tammy and Lindelof and rest Buendia but no.
Team news:
Martínez, Bogarde, Konsa, Torres, Digne, Luiz, Onana, Rogers, Sancho, Buendia, Watkins.
Subs: Wright, Bizot, Lindelöf, Mings, Garcia, Maatsen, McGinn, Bailey, Elliott, Abraham
That ball from Ollie there…sigh
Not terrible
It looks pretty similar to the last few weeks…slow and on our heels. The occasional burst from Onana and Rogers to break through the lines, but it’s very pedestrian.
I suspect Man United will play with a lot more energy than this Lille side, so we’re being made to look more competitive than we really are.
What was the point in buying Tammy?
Thank god for that
Excellent poached goal from nothing for Ollie. He is excellent when he doesn’t have time to overthink things.
Route one football. Hopeful punt upfield for the big man (Buendia) to nod on to Ollie.
Storming return for SJM. We suddenly looked more than competant. Ollie about to go on a streak? Bailey still pointless.
Job done. But the tie is still live. Ollie should have buried his chance when clean through on goal. Great assist from Buendia and also their keeper (being off his line). BUT. Does any team look more laboured trying to beat a press? Simple balls out seem to be beyond us.
It was great to see SJM back on the pitch giving it big arse.
Overall, no real sirens sounding although the gob on the megaphone did my head in more than our playing out from the back.
I was also surprised that their hatred for the world’s no. 1 has not abated over time.
A win,a clean sheet, goal for ollie,a good defensive game, onana looking decent, return of bravearse I am not going to mention the bad points
Bologna and roma draw
Workmanlike, professional…The European sides definitely suit our style more. Good to see passages with rhythm, glad Ollie finally had a breakthrough.
Some poor decisions and touches, but I’ll certainly take it.
100 wins for Emery. I expect the wins to flow again, now that milestone is out the way.
Far from vintage, I’d say it looked quite similar to the recent form, but a win is good and hopefully the confidence gets a bump-up.
Let’s hope they’re fired up for revenge on Sunday. It will need a Newcastle’esque performance and intensity to leave with three points
Yeah, gonna be tough…European sides at 2nd-tier, that’s one thing. This is all about mentality. We’ll have to be better.
Just to put some context into last night’s game. According to L’Equipe, Lille had 6 players out injured and lost another 2 during the game (Andre and Perrin). We caught them at the right time.
Yeah, we’re at the battle of attrition stage of the season.
The referee for tomorrow is Anthony Taylor. From Wythenshawe. Anyone from up there will tell you the place is Manure territory. Yet he gets to referee them on the grounds that he’s an “Altrincham supporter”. His appointment for this game is not a matter of chance, but quite deliberate. Stand by to watch us suffer, he will not disappoint us.
Since Damien vidgary complained about officials, it hasn’t got any better for us
Oh no. He’s a ‘big-man’ ref who referees by force and takes advantage of players/teams that don’t challenge him properly. Fernandes will be man-marking him all game, while our lads will be standing 5 yards back, waiting patiently to be ignored. Someone has to get in his space and force him to take us seriously
Well done Jacob ramsay,Newcastle beat chelsea, after rugby today being a great weekend
Please a miserable no score draw tomorrow will do
Yes, excellent result.
Also wouldn’t say no to a 0-1 smash and grab.
I’ll take that.
As soon as I say Ollie needs to come off he’ll do something, so I’ll say he should come off. Not troubling anyone, seems in three minds with the ball.
Otherwise, well organized and composed enough.
He’s been our reliable, one-man strike force and front press system for so long. A real top of the table quality striker. But he’s becoming the glaring weak point in every game. It’s such a shame but we just can’t afford to play with 10 men every week
Yes JC. Ollie is crap worse than Bailey – get him off!
Good job we have a more than reasonable defence and WN1 ‘cos our midfield is still misfiring and Ollie has become the player where attacks go to die. Don’t think we are deliberately conserving energy and trying to contain manure because they are forcing the game and giving us no choice.
Stupid booking for Ollie, think he might be on the edge of being a danger to himself through utter frustration. Stage is set for Ollie to score a late outrageous daylight robbery goal or else bring Tammy on to save Ollie from himself.
And agree with JC on how we look. Plenty of effort even if ManU look on top. If the flow of the game stays like the first half, I can see an unhappy ending for my Sunday afternoon. We’ll need the bench to inject the extra energy and quality to get us out with at least a point. And that means that I don’t want to see Bailey slipping and falling over for 20 minutes at the end…
You’re gonna get to see him slipping and falling over for 32 mins
Haha. I’ve enjoyed the show, and the bonus minutes
Galling…all from rogers being sloppy
Dozy Rogers sub par sloppy give away. Got a feeling that’s it.
Bailey???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
WTF Unai????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Get in
There’s no way that ball hits Onana.
Flipping heck. VAR did not screw us! Did a wayward Bailey cross set that in motion?
Well, thanks Leon…though Bruno’s ball was good.
JFC…can’t get out of our own way
What I will say is that while he’s reasonable inside, Bogarde isn’t a good FB. Garcia coming on now, hope he has some good minutes. Haven’t looked to see how long Cash is out, but we need another solution out there. At least Cash will put balls in, make runs, etc.
I’ve been thinking this. He’s better than Barkley and Luiz at CM. And Lindelof is fine as RB. Unai could be using them a bit more sensibly
Emery stubbornness is costing him and us
Watkins has been terrible all season yet we were told no natural replacement yet signs tammy doesn’t play him
Yes we have injuries, every team has them
Not saying emery out ,yet anyway
Kamikaze football, giving away momentum, goals and points to a bang average ManUnited. Loads of mistakes, but Digne just tapping the ball out for a corner, instead of even trying to play for a throwin sums up everything about them. They just can’t be bothered.
To be in the top 4 and on +3 GD is pathetic.
Xg is showing now, haven’t scored 2 goals in a match since Newcastle in league back in January
He’s an elite coach but a lot of the time, I just can’t figure out what’s going on inside Emery’s head. It just doesn’t look like we’re really trying to score
I think right now, Emery’s just trying to manage it. Your most influential midfielder is out (where would United be down this stretch without Fernandes?), our Casemiro (in Kamara) is out. We can’t really set up in a dangerous way that’s going to yield lots of chances. It has to come from Rogers being inside.
Yes, to be fair, that is true. And you are right when you say that Unai will be disappointed in their decision making. I think we could have expected better quality from a midfield made up of any two of Onana-Luiz-Barkley but they have been largely underwhelming for large stretches of the season.
These commentators sicken me,this is poor utd team yet they talk as if they were challenging for titles
We even miss an open goal at death
Var checked 3 penalty shouts for utd in first 30mins yet tammy gets clattered no check
Emery has to take his head out of arsenal where ollie is concerned, another shambolic performance, bogarde is a decent player not as rightback especially when getting no help, beundi is a moaning mimi contributed nothing, Bailey useless all last season useless in Italy but emery choice to come back ,add in nanny mcphees disastrous setpieces carry on
A great season could be all over this week
He’s in poor form, but the only one of our players who has a clue is Morgan Rogers. He’s consistently in trying the right things and having a competitive attitude.
That sums it up
Yeah, when it isnt your time…
I don’t know if it will happen in time for this season, but they need a reset similar to the start of the season, it’s very dispiriting
So for me, yes, everyone has injuries, but we were definitely the thinnest team up around the top. Seems odd to point to Bogarde again, but there’s no threat down that side without Cash, and he’s not fast enough to make up for it defensively. Given the lack of goals, that’s something that hurts. Bogarde wasn’t the reason we lost, but he highlights the lack of depth.
But where Emery will be upset is decisions. At 1-1, we lost the management aspect. Morgan’s giveaway was costly, likewise Bailey’s. It’s a fine line, you want to play to win, but you need to make better decisions, be more aware. That’s where you want the game to slow back down. Hold on to what you’ve got, see if there’s a late winner in it. We got pulled out of our shape and gave them those clear breaks.
While United underachieved with Amorim, they still have dangerous players.
What a fumbling fuck up. We lost fair and square. At least we have the dubious consolation of not having to moan about being robbed. Echo everything about Emery stubbornly persisting with badly (terminally?) out of form Watkins and Bailey. Even if we hadn’t lost Kam and Tmans, Ollie would still be misfiring and costing us.
I suppose we at least kept having a go for the last ten minutes but still made ourselves look stupid. Will we have redemption on Thursday in that eurocrap cup? Can we cheat our way into the chumpions league like spam and spuds in recent years?
Deep Gloom! Oh, hang on, we are safe from relegation. YIPPEE…………………………
Ha…I don’t think winning a tournament is a bad way to get into the CL, tbh. Would be great to see us win something, anything. It’s a mentality hump we haven’t been able to get over.
I don’t want to be all rose-colored glasses because it’s been a terrible run. But, that’s what buffers are for. There’s only eight left to play and we’re still in it. I’d like to think there’s a decent chance we pull it together.
No need to dampen your hope/enthusiasm, there’s plenty of frustration already, so adding perspective is welcome. I think everyone is worried that this season will end before we get ourselves together…including the squad itself.
Don’t doubt that
Certainties in life. Death, taxes and Villa losing at Manure. Didn’t think Manure were anything special. Without the one who looks like a rat, they’d be mid table. Thought we did quite well first half. Second half less so although it was a good comeback to make 1-1. After that…
Bailey lost the ball forward. Absolutely no effort from him to chase after the ball again and try and win it back. Instead he stands and waves an arm, they move downfield and bury it.
Concerned about Rogers’ form. He’s been ineffective for some weeks now. It was he who lost the ball forward that led to their corner for the first goal. At least he was trying to find an opening, but like Bailey, once the ball was lost, no effort to retrieve the situation.
Bogey’s best position is midfield. Lindelof or Garcia at RB may have been a better option.
Yeah, he’s been off it for a while. I’d say he needs a rest, but Fernandes is older and plays as much. Teams are certainly keying on him, and with no other danger man it’s sound strategy.
With the bin dippers winning at HT, looks like we’ll be 5th come close of play. Need to thank the Wai Ayes for beating Chelsea but we do now need to start accumulating some wins.
Watching spurs with however many men out, that they couldn’t fill the bench, look at effort they r putting in 85 gone and only 1 behind
We have too many spineless individuals who hide huff pretend they are injured
We keep going on about recruitment, how much money wasted yet where r our youth, jimoh showed more in 15mins than Bailey sancho in any game
Except Spurs got level so we are still 4th.
Player ratings for today and since Xmas
Martinez 6 maybe could done better with 2nd goal
Bogarde 5 up to hour mark was fine, when Bailey come no cover plus utd targeted him
Digne 5 no need to concede corner from 1st goal
Konsa 4 poor again ,
Mings 5 missed god chance to equalise
Onana 6 best of bunch
Barclay 5 sleeping for goal ,equalised
Beundi 2 moaning mini ,shocking since xmas
Rogers5 tries hard
Watkins 1 this is on emery bar good December been woeful all season
Mcginn 6 good hour so much depends on him
Subs
Bailey 1 nothing to say
Tammy 5 got stuck in
Luis garcia
Matasen no score as not on long
Emery 1 another shocking team selection, too late with subs, switching between mings torres yet beundi Watkins start every game
For those who think football is not corrupt. Just take a look at Chelsea’s £10.75 million fine for illegal and clandestine payments not included in their company returns. With their turnover amount, this fine is peanuts, shrapnel in their back pocket. Sporting advantages? Definitely acquired. It’s OK to hammer the likes of Everton, Forest and others with points deductions but when it comes to the entitled 6 there is a different narrative. It’s bent as a 9 bob note.
Much worse are Citeh’s cheats. When are the EPL going to decide on that? How many years do they want to wait? Have they got the balls to take action that fits the breaches? Will they ever do it?
Then of course, we have the appointment of a referee from Wythenshawe in charge of a home Manure game. He’s not the reason we lost at OT but they did try everything through VAR to find a way of wiping out the Villa goal. Corruption has no limits when big money is involved. The chants from the terraces about corruption are only going to get louder and more regular. Damage to the EPL image will increase and they’ve only got themselves to blame.
Today feels like do or die. I fear that our PL bubble has burst. We’re running on fumes and even the return of Tielemans is probably not enough to get us past Liverpool and Chelsea, with their vast rosters of millionaires. But if we can get some form back, the Europa League might be an obstacle we can overcome. But we have to get that form back! We should beat Lille, then we’ll need some luck the rest of the way.
Been in depression about it, PDX.
Thoroughly enjoyed Lindelof performance at RCB. He is the personification of KISS. No twiddling, fiddling or piddling about à la Konsa effing about in a stupid position. Konsa really needs to take note and adjust his ego.
Quite enjoyed Sancho on the right wing. Done some good things w/o being world beater. Doubly good to see a right footed winger on the right wing trying to beat the fullback on the outside. Was on the left wing for a few minutes and was totally pants. Stay right Jaden.
I know Lille aren’t upto much but Villa just looked more competant than in previous games. SJM effect? Lindelof security?
Perfect…save and brilliant pass from Emi. Sancho did well to hold up, send lovely ball across, and SJM being where he needed to be.
DEFFO!
Football poetry. Excellent save from WN1, then an even better slashing pass up the right wing, good control and progress from Sancho and then he cuts inside to set up SJM. RUTHLESS!
For the life of me I can’t understand why we can’t just thump a ball clear from the edge of our box. Always somehow steering it right back into the middle.
So glad that stood. Big goal for both of them.
Bailey, from the left, scores with his left foot. Time to bin inverted wingers? First good thing Watkins has done.
Watkins still floundering. Sancho’s best game. Maatsen looking fast and pugnacious. Lindelof CAF.
Martinez my POTM.
He should’ve done better with that cock-up there at the end.
WE’VE GOT McGINN……SUPER JOHN McGINN……
It started with a save from WN1 who then rushed to the edge of his box and launched a long ball down the right. Sancho galloped after it. He cut inside to beat his marker and played the ball across the box where SJM arrived well ahead of Tammy to tap it home. The ground exploded with relief.
Before KO, the atmosphere inside VP was electric. The place was rocking. The team then proceeded to suck the atmosphere out of it by playing stationary football along the back. Absolutely no doubt under instructions. Lille stood off and refused to engage so we spent the first 45 minutes watching a Mexican standoff.
That all changed at the start of the second half when Lille started pressing aggressively. Instead of speeding up our playing out from the back, we fell into the trap of sleep walking to disaster and the crowd became anxious. Until WN1, Sancho and SJM popped the pressure valve.
It’s Bologna up next so we won’t get to see Malen back down VP. And it also looks like the coefficient is done. England are way clear and I can’t see 2 countries catching us. Possibly Spain might but nobody else. Means P5 will be a UCL place this season.
There are some things you get with Tammy and some things you don’t. The same can be said of Ollie. They are different players that thrive in different ways. I didn’t think Tammy got much service whilst he was on the pitch. But when Ollie appeared, the movement up front increased and led to the second goal. Ollie’s assist is as good as a goal, set Bailey up perfectly to apply the coup de grace.
Agree with comments above about Lindelof. He looked assured. Bogey at RB is not his best position. Each time he received the ball, he played it back to the CB’s obviously under instruction. It made his moves predictable which he got away with in the first half as Lille stayed passive. After HT that changed.
This weekend’s results have been brilliant for us. Manure only drawing, Bin Dippers and Chelsea losing. We need to step up to the plate tomorrow and take the spoils. COYVB.
Wife and I went out to get some much needed nature time. Couldn’t believe the results when I snuck a look.
Get in…worked to perfection.
Bonkers long range left foot curler passed into the net by SJM. Uncharacteristic bright and lively start by Villa. Will they knacker themselves for the 2nd half?
Well, very good half…just hope we’re not left to rue all the missed chances. Could/should have had at least three.
Your feed must be 2 minutes ahead of mine – not trying to paraphrase you.
Bummer we passed up the chance of going 2 or 3 nil up. Spam will be better organised in the 2nd half. Hope Villa don’t get sloppy or complacent after such an easy 1st half.
Nice to see us physically on top for once. Hopefully it lasts for the 2nd half. West Ham are as passive as Forrest were. And this game is a good example of why we’ve been top 4 most of the season but have +4 GD. Even with carrying Ollie we should be at least 2 up. I’d like to see Ollie with Tammy for 10 minutes, and hopefully before the 70th minute. But any result that ends with 3 points will be fine for me
Beware. Wilson is a Coventry boy and likes any chance he can to screw Villa.
We have gone flat so I suppose we need to liven things up. Don’t think Bailey the useless will help
.
Oh thank god
Watkins “shoot first think second” books his England spot? Is 2-0 the most dangerous score in football?
It is, but can’t say I was comfortable before it went in
Also fantastic to see Youri back ahead of schedule
Big, big win. Football gods smiled on us this weekend.
Rare relaxing day when everything goes to plan and we never looked like not winning. Shame we have such a long break. Think Villa could have gone on a very consequentionally good run. I will be doubly pissed off if T’mans gets a setback playing for Belgium.
Nearly everyone stepped up at least gears (SJM effect?) so it would be rude to pick a POTM.
Random musing. Is this Onana’s longest run of games for us?
Probably not a coincidence that we started to find our way again when SJM returned.
Lille games were a good reset. Not saying anything about anyone!
…..at least 2 gears…….
WE’VE GOT McGINN…….SUPER JOHN McGINN…….
Signs of our old form coming back. Always great to put West ‘Aaamm to the sword. Always great to put a Laandaan club to the sword. I’m stoked. Think a 2-0 defeat flattered them, we could have scored 5.
We do look more assured in midfield with SJM. And it was fabulous to see T’mans back on the pitch. Looking forward to some better performances from hereon in.
Thought Onana had an excellent game and we did look our old selves in the first half. Four, possibly three more wins might do it.
I didn’t expect us to control the game so easily in the first half. I did expect Nuno to react though and the second half was more even. Still, the ‘Aammers are flying of late so it’s a big win. And needless to say, Ollie’s goal will do him a world of good. Rogers also had a better game than lately so maybe the returning engine room is all that’s needed.
Consecutive games of 2 goals scored and clean sheets. Time to crack a few cans open and enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Gone crazy and put a fresh page up.
Oh you wild thing………………………
