Wolves, Villa and Other Bits

Wolves, Villa and Other Bits

Funny thing trying to talk about football over a span of years is that you find yourself running out of things to say. Which hasn’t always stopped me from saying things, but you know what I mean.

Given our recent form and injuries, all compounded by the financial restraints, there are things worth talking about, though. Not exactly the freshest topics in the world, but sometimes things bubble back up to relevance.

While mathematically it’s been on the cards for Villa to win the league, most of us haven’t really bought into the dream. Some have, I’m sure, but they’ve always been whistling past the reality of our depth. And that lack of depth goes back to SCR and PSR, of course. Which means that in the short term, there’s just not a lot Villa can do to significantly increase revenue and build a deeper squad. While tweaks around Villa Park and adding some seats or more premium offerings can add a bit of money, none of that comes close to bridging the huge gaps between us and the entrenched clubs. So Champions League money is the only big short-term boost on offer. Unless someone wants to pay £200m-£300m for Villa Park naming rights.

So here we are in the doldrum months with three key midfielders missing including our best overall player. We can’t be surprised that we’re struggling. City were not long ago blaming all number of woes on Rodri being out. But the bigger point is that we’re meant to be struggling. That’s what the rules almost virtually guarantee. Even if we had everyone available, the sheer number of games in their legs and heads could see us in the same spot.

We also have to remember that Villa have been consistently over-achieving and a downturn of some sort was inevitable. We’ve talked about all this a lot, but it’s not like we have a starting XI as good as anyone else’s and are just missing the quality rotation element, or a wealth of players on the bench who would be starting most everywhere else. Which always brings us back to Emery, as it should. Even though Villa are in a bit of a rut at the moment, the fact we’re still in third and hanging on is remarkable. It’s getting a bit nervy, but I think we always knew it would.

But when the club are struggling and results are frustrating, we want answers. We’ll blame the selections or tactics forgetting that when he has more available, Emery’s delivered, and right now he doesn’t have a whole lot of options.

One thing I found interesting in light of the above and what Emery can or should be doing was an analysis I read in the Athletic about why Villa are bucking the trend and competing at the top given all the above. Basically, the takeaway is that Villa sit almost dead center in a graph charting possession versus counterattacking. This, the writer says, is the key attribute shared by the top sides. I would not disagree with the numbers.

This means that Emery has gotten the philosophy right, which is job one. That we don’t have the required number of players at the necessary levels, well…They’ve tried. The trick is that Villa need what all the leading clubs need, and that’s “polyvalent” players, according to the analysis. Which is a fancy way of saying what we all know: Emery values versatility and adaptability. We hear him say it all the time.

It sometimes seems like it’s just a cliché, but I think there’s a lot to it. We often think “if we had this or that kind of player” we’d be golden. And maybe we would. But Emery isn’t just looking for someone big and fast down the wings. It might be all the rage, but that kind of profile doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting the rest of what Emery’s style demands. Finding his players on the cheap has proven difficult.

But, it’s also difficult with money. For all the spending, depth and quality, Arsenal are only three wins better so far having played one more match. Players come and go, they’re always looking for more perfect fits, they spend £100m on someone they discard a season or two later. Think how much more integral Eze would be to Villa than he’s been in north London. And I wouldn’t have thought Villa would be six points better off than Chelsea or Pool at the moment.

Guess what I’m saying is that we’d all like there to be some magical tweak that unlocks things. But I don’t think there really is. The players are who they are. Emery’s down to bare bones. The rules keep us thin. Three guaranteed starters are out including our most influential player and our best defender. Ollie just isn’t right, for whatever reason(s). Rogers has run himself into the ground. Sancho hasn’t panned out the way we might’ve liked. Malen going came down to money, same as Elliott, neither player being influential enough all around to keep hold. Guessand ended up being a bust.

Villa are going to simply have to keep finding ways to grind out points, and we have to do better against so-called lesser teams. Villa’s recent form against sides we’ve expected to beat is obviously what’s been troubling. Instead of extending our advantage or simply maintaining the same gap, we’ve gotten reeled in a bit.

All of that said, however, Villa still sit third. We control our destiny. We have Youri and SJM coming back. Tammy might end up being a godsend. With any luck, we might just get better and fresher when we need it most.

A win tonight and we’d be only seven points off the top, and maybe six clear of fourth with 10 games to go. If Villa can just weather the storm a little longer, we might be on our way back to the promised land with a bit more cash in hand.

Over to you.

Gosh – when I was a lad, football was an 11 a side game played in the WM formation. Occassionally we had a mysterious player who could play in different positions on the pitch. We didn’t know what to call them so we called them a UTILITY player. Seems they have been superceded by POLYVALENT players. Progress eh!

Severely contemplating giving Ollie a Bailey type slagging in the hope that Karma shuts me up with an Ollie hat

I think it’s got to be a matter of time that having to manage everyone leads to mental burnout. He’s our real star, and it pretty much all hangs on his quality. The players, brilliant as they can be, can just as easily slip back into their bad ways.

Filthy night. Filthy performance. Filthy result. As John mentions in the header, these performances have been with us for some time. The absent engine room has taken a heavy toll. SCR and PSR have taken an even heavier one.

Didn’t think we showed any attacking intent tonight until the last 10 minutes. And what we did see was poor and lacking, Didn’t even see us putting in any tackles, unlike Wolves. If these players want UCL next season they’re going to have to show some desire and effort. Not like we are seeing from Buendia who spent much effort arguing with the ref. And that desire and effort is needed immediately otherwise it will be gone. So will the Europa if our legless demeaner persists.

As JV says, the weekend is ruined. I can always handle a defeat but have difficulty in accepting it when they don’t put in a shift. But as mentioned by others above, these players are out of steam. Bailey and Sancho are struggling. So is Buendia. So is Oillie. So is Digne and the CB’s. Right now, I can’t see how we get a goal. Might be worth keeping Digne at LB and putting Maatsen in left side of midfield.

Cash right side matasen left side
      Onana bogarde in middle
      Rogers and tammy upfront
Beundi Bailey Watkins are so poor at minute they would not look out place in leag1
Emery has worked wonders with this squad but missing the 3 injured stars and wonder goals we are not even awful,we are woeful this slow football has to change no point martinez konsa torres having most touches it has run its course

For me, it all starts with Monchi’s horrible summer. It brought us Sancho, Elliott, and Guessand, none of whom is good enough to start or even be a key reserve in this league. He rightly lost his job over it! Of the summer arrivals, only Lindelof has contributed, and that is as a fourth CB signed for free.

Still sore this morning about that performance. So often we ignored the simple ball forward to unmarked players and instead turned into traffic or just gave the ball away. As for effort and desire, didn’t see any. Wolves are a poor team but we never gave them a game. Didn’t turn up. Never looked interested. The fall off from earlier games is immense. Inclined not to put it down to the midfield losses, I would expect some fall off from that but not this much. The players should be better and at least put in a shift. They don’t just hand out UCL places, we have to fight for them.

Funny thing, though…I thought we looked fine to start. Typical game where their only possible plan was to harass and harry, which they did. And I thought there were some okay passages from us. But it did look like we would probably only scrape a 1-0 win if we were to get a win.

They never looked like scoring to my eye until they did. First shot on goal. Then we were really poor against a packed-in side with nothing to lose.

You just can’t concede first in games like that.

That said, I don’t disagree with your takes on how we looked poor. Think it was Ross who got beaten too easily in midfield leading to their goal, and our lack of physicality in challenges got worse. But we were pressing high, winning the ball, doing a lot.

      Until we weren’t.

They may as well declare Manure UCL qualification now. With decisions witnessed this afternoon, nobody else has a chance. Kavanagh is a piss poor referee. In fact it was the crowd that refereed the game. Every time they shouted, he blew bar none. Cunha threw himself to the floor and in so doing denied himself a goal scoring opportunity. Well a penalty and red card at OT is written in the laws. The stench is so heavy you dare not strike a match.

The air has well and truly been taken out of the balloon. Good grief, what has happened over the last few weeks…

In pretty much 90% of the games this season, the biggest variable has been Villa. If we turn up, we win, if not, it’s up to the oppo and referee.

    So what has happened?
Injuries – everyone has them, and we have a decent squad
Niggles – I’ve given up guessing if the likes of Onana and Watkins are fully fit
Tiredness – are they professional athletes or not, they’re usually worse after a full week off
Morale – they were 3rd in the top league in the world, do me a flavour
Tactics – they haven’t changed from when we were winning every week

For me it’s the natural ebb and flow of performance that this group of players has, and things not rolling our way so often.

Interesting thoughts Henry. Let’s hope we get our rhythm back soon before all is lost. The immediate concern for me is Lille who we desperately need to squeeze past. But the players and staff will only be concerned about the next game which is Chelsea, one we must not lose.

Despondent is how I feel. I had big reservations once I saw the line up as I thought Bailey and Ollie might have been rested because they need it. But not the case. Great start and I guess the game hinged on the 2 offside goals, both favouring Chelsea. Couldn’t really tell from my seat but watching replays this morning…… Have to say Ollie on the break didn’t need to be offside, he could have left a yard in it and still been OK.

Second half was all Chelsea. Younger, fitter. Even their older players seemed yards quicker than us, recall James catching someone up. Not surprised Cash was pulled at HT. He had torrid first half against Garnacho who tormented him ceaselessly. Cash didn’t get much help mind, unlike when Bailey attacked and was always surrounded by 3 players. Buendia needs to be rested too and Rogers looks gassed. Haven’t seen the stats yet, but Chelsea looked way more mobile than us. They could drive a coach and horses through our central defence. Konsa will be lucky to get a world cup place.

The morning after, serious questions are/have to be asked about emery management now
We have including injured, loan players 25 man squad with majority here from Dean Smith,Gérard time, our transfer dealing has been horrific, between signing loan players rashford asenio and sancho on massive money to guessand and elliot deals
Emery has no plan b it’s ok maybe when 3 injured lads are available, but as Matt kendrick said last night Bailey or sancho beundi or barclay does it matter all options at minute are rubbish
Players mentality cash gets injured when pressure is on saying that emery tactics last night left him isolated all half, konsa head seems to be turned is it his English teammate geuhi getting 300 thousand a week, same for martinez best keeper in world yet we sign players on loan give them double his money

My take on the stadium emptying early. It’s not surprising, we were well beaten and suffering big time. Subs were too little too late. Having said that, Barcs looked slow and disinterested even though he wasn’t. From my playing days, if the opposition got 2 or 3 goals ahead then anger took over and the team became aggressive and competitive. Elbows became sharp, fighting spirit increased and tackles were never ducked. Didn’t see any of that from our boys.

On the bigger picture and JV speaks of it above. The team is still substantially the same as Deano’s. We have not been allowed to spend unlimited funds and net spend during Unai’s time has been negligible. He has worked wonders to get them into UCL and Europe 3 years running. But the team is getting older and needs regenerating. We cannot spend £400 million like the entitled 6 did this year so he’s up against it from the outset.

We are currently in free fall. Unai needs to shake them up and get them on a run again otherwise UCL will be gone and it’ll be a scramble for Europa. Whilst I wouldn’t bet against him, it is a tough ask.

So I couldn’t watch in real time due to work commitments, and I’m glad of that.

But I hear what everyone’s saying and I’m not surprised. We know it’s a thin squad and we know why. We know Emery’s gotten the best out of it that anyone probably can. The recruitment hasn’t gone well, which is why I assume Monchi’s gone. How much of that’s down to Emery, I can’t say.

We know that teams who have recruited based on age and athleticism give us fits. There is a way of playing, and it’s the one we employing, that can counter this…but the players have to be on it. And if everyone out there isn’t at the top of their game, it can go sideways fast.

So I’m sure there’s mental fatigue. We can talk about them being professionals, but as I’ve banged on about, I think a big part of the challenge is players knowing they have to play at their peak every time with no room for error. Most of them know if they’re being honest that their ceiling is sort of the bare minimum for the position. And that they’re always playing against someone with a higher ceiling. In the top six-seven, at least.

Ollie’s form isn’t helping, the way we’re forced to line up isn’t helping. I understand concerns about any given XI, but when your options are starting Sancho or Bailey, well…how much does it really matter?

We could say Tammy for Ollie, Sancho for Bailey. Rest of the side kind of picks itself. Is that enough? The only upside I see is that SJM and Youri coming back after long layoffs could inject needed calm and freshness.

I’ll also go back to spending and say it’s really hard to keep up with teams that can recruit and churn through 20-30 players, send some on loan, sell the outcasts at a profit, end up with 15-16 that would walk into our side then repeat the process every season.

Meanwhile, we can only afford to have one £50m player on the pitch. (Not counting Rogers’ value, the only one I’d assume would fetch more than that.) So, let’s call it two.

Not the same at every club around us, some are thinner than others, but they’re all fielding many more higher quality players in their starting XIs, and generally their next five are better than ours.

Can’t understand why it isn’t simple: front-most planted foot. Everything else is irrelevant. It’s like it’s designed to be meaningless

The game has gone mad JV. And your suggestion is way too sensible John. Don’t get me going on VAR. I’m having enough trouble controlling my thoughts on Citeh’s 115 charges being swept under the carpet.

UEFA are getting upset with the EPL becoming so strong that the rest of Europe will just become even less competitive. At least the discussion has started. Don’t think it will be long before they come up with some method to even up the playing field a little more.

Interesting, Plug. As I’ve sat here worrying about our wobble, finding myself a bit depressed on top of everything else, I wasn’t really considering the fact that qualifying for Europe is actually hindering as much as helping. Only makes the CL money more important since it’s the most sizeable, but all I can say is that it does my head in.

It really has just turned into a revenue competition with the football being a by-product.

Right, got a fresh page up, hopes it cleanses the stench and helps with the luck.
