And here we are. On the back of a tumultuous summer that probably wasn’t quite what was intended, Villa enter the 2026-27 campaign as reigning Europa League champions with a distinctly different look than the side who finally lifted a second European trophy.
I’ve seen all sorts of takes, but the most common is the strange sense of optimism Villans have with Emery still at the helm. That’s how good he’s been. That’s the credit he’s banked. Is it misplaced? Well, that’s yet to be seen of course, but I’m not even sure that’s the question anyone should be asking. The question is whether Villa and Emery had much choice. That’s the question that gets to the heart of the modern game. Whether we’re optimistic or not is not really relevant.
We’re all intimately familiar with the rules limiting Villa’s spending. We’re all intimately familiar with an aging roster that owed as much to Dean Smith as anyone. Players no one really would’ve banked on who, in the right hands and with a bit of added quality, turned into a resilient, adaptable side that could finally win something.
And of course that comes with a cost. The ‘big’ sides start poaching, leveraging their years of financial muscle with rules that have locked those revenue advantages into place. So Villa were left with little choice but to cash in on Morgan Rogers. Watch Youri pick United. Find a replacement for Erzri Konsa. Move on from Dibu, bid farewell to Lucas Digne.
On paper, it should look depressing. And I suppose it is, when viewed in the context of sporting parity. But as the Manchester City verdict keeps getting punted into purgatory and foreign owners like Villa’s have flooded the market, parity is a thing of the past. So you try to box clever. Which is where the optimism comes in because we trust Emery to spend money.
Will he get it all right? Of course not. Arsenal win the league and still go spend a fortune implying there are better players, that ‘mistakes’ have been made. Chelsea carry 40-some players, loaning, buying, selling and still manage to underachieve, paying huge sums for saviors that haven’t produced.
The churn is just going to be a thing from top to bottom.
So. It’s churned at Villa and the wheels are still in motion. Nicolas Jackson? Perhaps. Jean-Philippe Mateta? Fikayo Tomori? Youssouf Fofana? Joshua Zirkzee? Lots of names. Leon Goretzka seems like a thing that’s happening. Joan Manzambi, Garnacho, Ruggeri, Suzuki, Gomes are in. Others mooted. The side we see line up to tomorrow against Brighton will probably be somewhat different than the staring XI two months from now. Other sides have gotten used to it, and now Villa must, too. Other names are being mentioned and we’ll see who lands.
Konsa? Was never going to be worth more with only two years left on his contract at his age. Rogers? Two years at Villa and roughly an £80m+ profit. Youri Tielemenans, signed on a free, two good years, £35m profit. Like Duran, sell when the market is high. Villa could’ve probably kept all but Youri, but we know by now that when larger pay packets and ‘big names’ are involved, you always end up losing by hanging on too tight. I can see Ollie going, stories saying he’s asked for the move and no one doubts it’s for the ridiculous personal terms the Saudis will pay. If he wants to go play in a desert to pad his family’s nest egg, I’ll simply say thank you and good luck.
If Konsa really makes Arsenal notably better, I’ll be surprised. I like him, I really do, but not a transformational player. Rogers? He could go on to be unplayable, but he’s never going to really be worth more than he is right now, and Chelsea have a way of ruining players. He was also a very streaky player. Digne? Right time to let him go. Martinez? We loved him. But once he wanted a move away to a ‘bigger’ club I was done with him, all his previous words of devotion ringing hollow. Was he fabulous? Yes. Indispensable? No. From what I’ve seen Suzuki will be great shot stopper and is also a big physical presence.
An old American football saying I’ll repeat again says it all: Better to sell a year too early than a year too late.
On the other side, the notional investment in Madjo could pay huge dividends. Alysson, while not making huge waves yet, is almost certainly an upgrade on Bailey and/or Guessand. Hemmings? There’s a player in there. Wan-Bissaka? He’s going to be an upgrade on Kosta, or Ezri deputizing.
As tomorrow’s opponents have shown, and Brentford as well, you can bank profits and go find other diamonds. Take advantage of the team who only buy finished articles. They’re often not really much better than he new faces. Ollie, Konsa, Martinez, Rogers…none of them were huge layouts and were all plucked from relative obscurity.
So. I have no idea what the opener holds. But we had a shit start last year and still won a trophy and finished fourth, with a squad that was seriously punching above its weight.
Do I back Emery? I do. He’s earned it and Villa have gotten faster, younger and stronger. Will there be bumps? Of course. But I think we’ve done more with the Rogers money than with the Grealish money. That’s where optimism is rooted.
Over to you.
New-Look Villa Enter New Era

Not yet fully functioning after coming out of my summer hibernation. My summer sleep was disturbed by some sort of bumping , banging and yapping that seems to happen every four years – so I’m feeling grumpy.
Thanks for kick starting my senile football brain. I knew there was something that I was supposed to be thinking – oh yes we’ve got a new Villa to addictively obsess about. I know it’s a bit late to ask, but is there any treatment for this condition?
Crikey! I’m waking up fast. I’ve just thought about a new positive. We don’t have to worry about our players being tapped up during international breaks and I don’t have to care about england games for a while.
I can’t believe it’s here again already. The amount of football is nuts. That ‘preseason’ felt like 10 training games in two weeks.
Excellent piece, John – says it all very succinctly. I’m starting my 70th season supporting Villa and, at my age, losing ‘heroes’ like Ollie and Emi is rather like hearing that an old, and well-liked, acquaintance has passed away. It’s upsetting, yes, but you get over it and move on. We have some potentially very good new players – and one or two young ‘uns who could turn out sensational – so I look forward with confidence that Unai will ‘get a tune’ out of them. UTV.
’51 vintage – too young for Peter McParland. My first game was Dec 66 when manure didn’t turn up for a 2-1 “thrashing”.
Thanks for the script John. Nails the situation exactly.
Team News:
Bizot, Cash, Lindelöf, Torres, Maatsen, Gomes, Kamara, Barkley, McGinn, Buendía, Hemmings.
Subs: Suzuki, Mings, Ruggeri, Bogarde, Rowe, Garnacho, Burrowes, Lynch, Alysson
Happy that Gomes has been passed fit. No Ollie or Tammy so looks like a false 9 deployment. COYVB!!!
Return of the villans, strange to see side without so many of regulars, but bar big bad john no recent other sale bothers me
Going to take a fee matches for us to click, when you count our new record signing, new German or new keeper not ready to go never mind the beast ,in unai we trust
Qh dear, would Mings have done that? That was row Z material.
Villa obviously in a transitional shambles. 0-2. Hope Gomes has got a shot on him.
0-3. Then 0-4. Consider ourselves seriously tonked. Massive 2nd half surgery required just to stay 0-4.
Hothead Gomez trying too hard deservedly sent off. One less body to choose from for the next 3 games. Thanks PSR for protecting the shite 6!
Well, that couldn’t have gone any worse.
I will say from an optimist’s POV, had Buendia converted early it would likely have all gone very differently.
But no recognized striker, Gomes frustrated (would likely to see the ‘asking for yellow’ evenly applied), Pau at sea, Lindelof incredibly unlucky…
I suppose we have to say that last season’s team had peaked and needed to be systematically dismantled in a controlled Emery way. Trouble is PSR/SSR(?) has just blown apart that idea. Non of our transiton except for Rogers has been anywhere controlled or planned. One positive, Hemmings is well and truly in the deep end. Hope he has got a tough mentallity.
Mings subbed on for Torres. Didn’t Torres miss 2 weeks of the season with injury? Could explain his dismal performance, played while not being right.
Shambolic 20mins after bright start, ref has had poor game
Well that was a lucky Nil-4 defeat , could have been infinitely worse. Saw Lindelof limping in the last few minutes. Bogarde RCB next game? SJM his usual battling self and never gave up. Punchy game from Maatsen in 2nd half.
Then we get to girly hairband Guarnacho. FFSFFSFFSFFS. I wont accept that he is giving it a proper go until he ditches the floppy hair ego and that effing hairband. AAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHH…VOMIT!
Busy few days needed, but that doesn’t excuse our defensive collapse, torres at fault for first 2,linderof should done better for3rd and 4th less said, emery probably should have started anyone other than barclay, with mcginn really only playing 75/80mins barclay ideal sub, that’s another bad start for emery
Never saw that result coming. Was hoping for a draw, prepared for a defeat but not prepared for a battering. A bright opening 7 or 8 minutes then Maatsen decides to take a throw in just inside his own half and launch it towards the corner flag with Pau in hot pursuit. His right foot pass to prevent the corner was awful and they get a lucky opening goal. After that…..disintegration. Nobody played well. Barks was slow, Lindelof and Pau without pace, Kamara not yet match fit.
Thought they targeted Gomes. Some heavy tackles going in on him. Does he have some previous with Brighton? Waving the imaginary yellow card was plain stupid. The straight red, well I thought he was fouled first.
Hemmings not at the races. SJM struggling. Buendia not a CF. Bankes a piss poor ref. Sods Law, what could go wrong did go wrong. Brighton’s easiest game of the season. We will remember this day.
He was fouled first, it was stupid, and I see it very unevenly enforced.
Wow that was a shocker. Good first 7 minutes then a disaster-class in punching yourself in the face. Good effort to keep it 0-0 in the 2nd half.
It’s another season that’s less than the full 38 games… I hope it’s the last one.
Seems like Emery thought Ollie would play, it’s a strange end to his Villa career. Leaving us humping balls up to 5’0” Buendia was a sobering 90 minutes.
Hopefully we have at least a few training sessions with the team that plays Aresenal, and it includes a striker. I still have full faith that we could have another great season, especially with how average everyone else looks right now.
Punching yourself in the face…indeed.
I do think it can be a good season. Like you’re saying, when you’re down to playing Buendia and Barks as your striking pair, well…We’ll see some more signings.
I’ve no doubt Henry that Unai will iron the creases out of his new recruits and get them structured in his usual methods. Yesterday was a one off as only one newbie was available in the starting line up and Ollie left us with the problem up top.
Brighton have had a massive stroke of luck meeting us at home on the opening round of matches. The churn, as JC mentions in his script played out perfectly for them. We owe them one.
Just to amplify HD’s comment on the strange end to Ollie’s career, it is a bit deflating for everyone. He’s been so integral, yet no real send-off or sense that his time had come to an end.
Of course, I’m not pleased with SA coming in and pressuring Villa so hard at this point in the window. Just pay us the silly money and make it happen. I can’t really blame Ollie because at 30, and with domestic interest having waned, he’s got a chance to secure a massive payday for him and the family.
I’m not sure whether him not even being on the bench was down to Emery being upset with him or just the situation in general. Obviously he hasn’t taken Villa’s offer, which either could be seen as a slap or him not giving Villa more leverage. But at this point, I assume signing a deal would mean saying no to SA after agreeing personal terms.
All those granted the extra time off, well…obviously there was interest and the traditional withholding of players was the real reason, not extra rest.
Anyway…while I do remain optimistic, it’s been a lot of late upheaval. Me, I don’t like the window being open past the start of the season. I know there’s all the different leagues to consider, but you should know who your team is by KO on opening day.
The Saudi window closes on 10th Sept which means Ollie could leave after the EPL window closes. Villa should make things crystal clear to Ollie and Saudi that no deal is possible after the EPL window closes. In fact, I’d make it in the next day or so.
We can’t go into the new season with Tammy and Madge as our only options up top.
Yeah, I’d put a hard stamp on it, too, tell Ollie and his camp that SA needs to get it done and pay enough so he can get rich without screwing us over.
No matter what does he is up against it, if it not sales it’s scr,it’s 45 day rule it’s injuries and to top it of it’s ollie watkins doing the unforgivable, leaving like a fabians delightful the worst honnor any players can get
Ah, yes…How quickly Delph has slipped from my mind.
Ollie trained today and apologised to teammates
Sooner transfer window shuts the better
Linked with ac Milan lad tonight
The cynic in me says they’re trying to paper over the PR disaster with supporters. But who knows.
I’m guessing everyone else has seen it, but reading that Villa are obviously holding out on selling Ollie while sourcing his replacement and that that has been accomplished and is believed to be Nicolas Jackson. First part makes sense, not so confident in the second. Report says £15m/yr for Ollie (£288k/wk), price not disclosed.
I quite like Jackson, but he isnt the leader and standard setter that Ollie was. As with all things, whatever Unai wants is fine for me…and I’ve long given up screaming at clouds about transfer fees, I guess it isn’t 2001 anymore. I also suppose that the club have a few more cherries lined up to sweeten up the fans, I also like the Rafael Leao talk – even if we’re just a tool for the move his agent really wants for him.
And finally Martinez to Chelsea would be the final kick in the bollocks for this summer window. I’d rather have given him to Juve for nothing
Ollie’s sale amount is £50m according to reports (60m Euros). Monaco currently hold the biggest sale amount for a single summer window at 360m Euros in 2018/19. That’s the record. Villa are on course to beat it. Current Villa sales are reported as 293.1m Euros. Add 60m Euros for Ollie. Get 7m Euros or more for WN1 and we’ve beaten it. Like Henry says, bummer if he goes to Chelsea. We are going to miss Ollie’s movement.
Blimey. Tammy on loan to Ipswich for the season. Obviously a loan fee involved. This is turning into a real shake out. Hope we manage to keep UEFA onside.
Wow, didn’t have that on my bingo card. Another signing that didn’t last. And referring back to your comment above, I think that this is way more business than was imagined. I thought it would be Rogers, probably Konsa and maybe one more. The fact that Konsa, Watkins and Youri were offered new deals points to us wanting to keep them all, plus Vidagany’s comments about Martinez staying. We won’t know what we’ve got until the music stops but I think it might take a while to figure out the best combinations.
I have to believe we have someone who can run the numbers right…I’m sure we’ve known all along we’d be paying fines as the cost of doing business without running too far afoul.
Seems like it’s a natural convergence: aging players winning something, cashing in on their value while they still can and Villa in turn taking advantage to just go ahead and assemble a younger, faster team. Rodgers is the only exception, age-wise, but you have to take that kind of money and run, use it to fund the rebuild we’ve known had to come.
I have to confess that I was out while the first game was on, so I’ve only seen the goals once…as they went in.
I’ve watched a replay of the first 20 minutes and 1) I can’t believe that we’re the ones who ended up with 10 men. Brighton were hacking and swiping at everything that went past them. 2) only one side looks like creating enough chances to score 4 goals.
It looked like there was a plan on and off the ball, we were just let down by 3 huge individual mistakes, so I think the 11 on the day were prepped with a plan.
On Gomes, the red and the 4th were mistakes but until then, he was playing well and Brightons tactics were leaving him increasingly disadvantaged. When he gets booked, it’s because he’s rolled Gross and is getting pulled back, and the ref had been letting Brighton get away with those without bookings all game. (There’s one on Hemmings when he’s almost thru on goal) So he (stupidly) waves a yellow at the ref and gets booked himself, eventually, so does Gross.
Then soon after Gomes holds off 3 Brighton players and plays a lovely reverse ball thru to Bouba, so Ayari very dangerously cuts him down to stop the break – yellow card but no attempt by the ref to get on top of Brighton’s tactics. It’s the type of tackle that has injured Bouba several times. Gomes is the only player to react to try to influence the ref.
Then a few moments later, Gomes steams towards a tackle but pulls up short, and the Brighton player simulates contact and the ref gives a foul – Brighton bench up in arms, Emery telling Hurzeler to sit down, where is VAR to advise a second yellow to the Brighton player for diving?
And that was the buildup to him getting sacked in midfield and then kicking Rutter.
Until the 3rd goal he had been winning duels, intercepting passes and helping Bouba rotate the ball. So as bad as his final 5 minutes were, I think there’s lots to hope for. I also think that his competitive spirit and aggression is desperately needed for our ‘nice’ team.
Agreed, HD. Emery was furious, and I’m guessing part of Brighton’s plan was to goad a player like Gomes into losing his temper. I hate that it happened and he’ll miss games, but I like that he has a mean streak. We haven’t had that in god knows how long. When Emery took his head in his hands when he came off, spoke volumes.
Welcome to VP Leon Goretzka. A much needed reinforcement to our engine room.
Excellent…I’d started to wonder if something had gone awry there. Loads of experience to go along with the youth we’re investing in.
Seemingly the Jackson/Watkins scenario sorted. No clues about C/H but I seem to remember that Todibo was looked at in the past and I believe he is left footed – Mings replacement? Anyone for the portugese Grealish?
Champions League draw concluded. Villa will play:
Barca (A)
PSG (H)
Bruges (A)
Borussia Dortmund (H)
Fenerbahce (H)
Galatasary (A)
Viking (H)
Slavia Prague (A)
Couple of tasty fixtures from Pot 1 (Barca and PSG). Both Turkish teams from Istanbul drawn against us. Viking and Slavia Praha from Pot 4.
These are NOT the order of the games, they follow on Saturday.
Getting to be old friends with PSG
As of Friday morning 28th Aug, (i.e. Ollie, Tammy and WN1 are still AVFC players) Transfermarkt has Villa’s summer transfer dealings as:
Players sold Euros 293.1m
Players purchased Euros 160.5m
Positive balance of Euros 132.6m or about £115m quid. Loans are excluded (Wan-Bissaka and Garnacho) which carry a cost, but we have plenty of players loaned out to compensate. By close of play on Monday we will know more accurate estimates. Clearly still room for more additions.
We’re obviously headed for a positive balance to add to the revenue streams. With UCL included, I’d expect us to break through the £400m revenue barrier for this season. With a reduced wage bill as well, I’d expect us to comfortably comply with UEFA’s PSR regs.
Whilst AVFC looks financially healthy, Manure carry massive debt, Spurs carry massive debt, Chelsea carry massive debt and Citeh have been allowed to allegedly fiddle the books. In all cases these teams can spend whatever they like whilst Villa has to carry out acrobatics through hoops and bars to avoid punishing penalties. The EPL and UCL are indeed a closed shop of the selected few.
Yeah, the acrobatics are ridiculous and cause us to miss out on players when we try to do the initial loan deal to bridge the sale to the next financial year.
There is a bit of general feeling in life that things are getting too unfair, and that extends to football.
When you type it out like that, it’s crazy that we’ve been able to get this close to the closed shop that is the ‘Special 6’
The Athletic is reporting that we are buying Mbaye from PSG for 55m. Yikes! Unless there is something else in the works, we are going to play a lot of 5-4 games this year! Buendia is flexible, maybe he can play centerback.
I’ll be drooling if Mbaye comes off PDX. Still think we need a big pacey CB and the same for midfield. Get those and we will mount an offensive challenge at the top of the EPL. Exciting times. Unai looked stoked in his presser today.
Yeah it was great to see Unai looking so pumped, he was right up for it
Yeah, woke up seeing that, PDX…This has turned into a fascinating window. We lose out on Leao (27) over how we’d like to structure the deal, then turn around and spend the same or more on Mbaye (18). Clearly prioritizing getting younger. Jackson’s 25, Ollie would turn 31.
Welcome to VP Nicolas Jackson. I’m so looking forward to seeing some goals from you. I hope your time at VP is successful.
My best wishes for Emi Martinez and his family moving forward. Whilst he became the world’s number one by his own efforts and work rate, it was at Aston Villa that those efforts were rewarded. He will always be a Villan.
Gutted he’s gone to Chelsea rather than anywhere outside the entitled Sky six. But he wanted away and Unai’s decisions are entirely trusted by us fans.
And best wishes too for Ollie and his family. He made a mistake refusing to play when we had no fit CF but it’s gone now.
This should just about complete the changing of the guard for the current transfer window in terms of leavers. Any incomings look like being left until the death.
Tbh has been announced, final piece in emery jigsaw, konsa won’t recognise many tomorrow evening, I dont
It would be nice if Ezri helps us with a daft pass or two into the middle.
And a fresh page is up.
