Different week, different challenge, and a very important three points as Villa found their way back from an early deficit against an aggressive and physical side that was just lacking that bit of quality up front.
That said, I don’t want to take anything away from Villa: that’s a very easy match to lose, never mind the start. As many have noted, animated crowd baying for blood, a definite derby feel to the intensity, and the kind of opponent against which we often struggle.
I didn’t really agree with the lazy takes I was hearing on TV. I thought Villa did respond to the scrappy and foul-spirited approach. But, as we know, there aren’t many hard men in the side. I do tend to think we shy out of a number of 50-50s, and often let players go by a bit too easily. I also don’t know whether Emery doesn’t want them giving up a lot of free kicks.
It was better after the half, of course. Villa got a bit more width and pace with Malen, Maatsen and the subsequent reshuffling. There was a quicker, more direct approach, which is what we often see after a deliberate first half. It obviously paid dividends. You hate to keep relying on that kind of turnaround, but you can see it’s something Emery knows they’ve got.
And it can wrong-foot teams who have prepared to stop us playing through the middle. We did get several looks, but weren’t particularly clinical. Of them all, Rogers’ first was definitely the most difficult chance to convert. Excellent assist from Malen, whose positive run Cash invited neatly.
The flip-side of course is that the game becomes more open, and with Leeds’ changes, James in particular, it was a nervy watch down the stretch, particularly before replays showed that Calvert-Lewin managed to get his hand involved in the disallowed equalizer right after we’d gone ahead.
Not surprisingly, Leeds were most threatening from set pieces, and Longstaff’s delivery was consistently dangerous.
Martinez, of course, will be questioned for their goal, which is fair. But he responde well with a couple big saves and controlled his area comfortably thereafter.
Ollie, well…We obviously still aren’t creating a lot of clear-cut chances for him. When he got himself open for a clean look in the second, I thought, “Here it comes, finally” only to see a rather tame, low effort that didn’t really test the keeper. Watching back, the curler at the end of the first half was probably a better opportunity, and it would’ve been a lovely way to get going again.
For Rogers, obviously a very welcome return to form in front of goal. That was a really fine finish for the first, and then a sublime free kick that seems to be something cooked up at Bodymoor. It was almost a carbon copy of Buendia’s strike in its knuckleball effect, though closer looks reveal Buendia hit his with his laces while Rogers side-footed. Regardless, the keepers were rooted in both cases and Rogers went right over to MacPhee.
Basically, it was tactics and superior individual quality that shone through on a day of few truly gilt-edged chances. Villa showed character and resilience in a hostile environment against a desperate side, and I’m with Emery in being very, very happy. We’ve got one half of our main goal-scoring duo coming back into form, and fingers crossed Ollie soon follows. The odds have to be in his favor by now.
Now of course it’s Young Boys coming right up followed by Wolves. The first third of what could be a very important week has gone Villa’s way. Carry the momentum through and Villa will find themselves in pretty decent shape on the two most important fronts. Given our obvious shortcomings in more than one department, it all remains rather remarkable.
Over to you.
Leeds 1-2 Aston Villa

Thanks John, an excellent summation as always. Emery does manage to get us capable of winning runs. This one is only the latest, there have been previous ones. The last 7 games have achieved 18 points, top stuff. If Ollie starts providing goals or assists again, this run will extend further.
I’m expecting rotation against Young Boys. Guessing Guessand will be back in. A win of any description will be brilliant. COYVB.
It seems like 16 points will get us in the top 8 for the Europa League. So if we take care of business that’s 3 more matches of consequence, requiring involvement from the ever presents (Cash, Konsa, McGinn, Rogers etc.).
Great management from Unai, as ever, to turn around a very funky summer and August.
I think bouba has been sluggish of late, and Youri looked quite rusty, leaving Onana to be the muscle and intensity until his injury. It’d be interesting to know what it is that’s making Ollie “uncomfortable”.
Malen under jumps the much taller defender and puts in a bullet header.
There’s obviously a gap in quality but I think we’re basically playing against our twins. They don’t really press but have a high line, they also roll the ball around their back line trying to bait the press. And I can only think, wow the other teams must quite enjoy the physical break they get while playing us 😂
Malen scores with a right foot rocket. How about a malen left foot goal next?
Villa have slept walked to 2-0.
Their fans are fucking up their own team!
Can’t help observing that Malen is doing all the things that Ollie should be doing. Hope Ollie is watching.
Offside goal with his LEFT foot! Can’t get it right every time.
Their goal was minutely offside. Warning to Villa to stop swanning around and get on with the job.
The positves were that Villa won with minimal effort and there shouldn’t be any fitness problems for Sunday.
Villa were technically at least 3 or 4 goals better than YB but it was a classic case of Villa not taking their chances. Sorry to say this applied to Ollie and Sanches. Both were seriously underwhelming.
SNORE ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Don’t know who that Sanches bloke was but he was impersonating the even poorer SANCHO!
Didn’t get to see the second half, thought we’d end up winning by 3 or 4. But glad we saw it out.
Well then. I was just admiring the Young Boys fans. They created maximum noise, had a geezer with a megaphone and another with a head pounding drum. Brilliant but then Malen scored and they went apeshit. Missiles and beer rained down on the pitch. Then Malen scored again and all hell broke loose. Before restarting the game, the ref sent one of their players over to the fans to have a word. It made matters worse. Plastic seats were broken up and hurled onto the pitch along with more missiles. The police moved in and a full scale riot kicked off. Bean helmets flying, punches galore thrown from both fans and police. In came the riot squad with crash hats, visas, batons and shields. Very entertaining as a mere witness but disgraceful scenes that UEFA is going to punish. And I think the HT whistle went about 10 minutes late. They were better behaved in the second half.
The game itself Villa coasted. And it nearly cost us. They had a disallowed goal that took some minutes to decide it was offside. It must have been very close. But the warning wasn’t heeded, we continued to miss chances and got caught at the death. But a win is a win. Three more points and I believe third in the table. Great chance of getting top eight.
Thought Malen was excellent as was Onana. T’mans ran the midfield with Rogers also prominent. Sancho and Guessand less so. But some of our players got a rest and we got the result.
Repairs to the away seating needed before the Wolfies arrive. I’m guessing one moron who was fighting the police and got arrested is still in the clink for the night.
4th place and in top form versus bottom place and down and out. What could possibly go wrong?
New manager syndrome – DUMMY!
The world number 1 goalkeeper has just about kept us in the game.
Buendia not really sparkled today, subbed off for Watson. Will the twin striker experiment work?
FH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Screamer from outside the box by Kam. Goal from nowhere!
Wolves no nonsense keep it simple style utterly suppressed our school of science approach. Only Martinez kept us in the game. Martinez did the same in the second half until Kam scored a rare goal from outside the box. SJM just kept on scrapping away for the entire game and should be POTM but Martinez made at least 4 match saving saves so he gets my POTM.
Time for me to wind my neck in.
Unai working miracles
Not pretty but who cares, thought chris kavanagh gave one of worst reffing performances in a long time, wolves kicked pulled moaned the entire match,to top it all he was quite close to tackle on kamara which he didn’t give a foul, then 9mins of injury time
I’m in complete agreement with your comments.
Bugger! 10 men chelski hold the arse to a draw. We are dumped into 4th on flipping goal difference.
I ended up missing this one, and from the sounds of it glad I did. I did record, so I’ll give it a watch, but sounds a bit excruciating in real time.
Good grief that was dull. But for the sound of screaming children, I might’ve fallen asleep. Martinez is worth 10 points, like all top keepers. Unai needs to figure out which games require structure with Digne and McGinn providing width, and which ones need energy and spontaneity from Maatsen and Malen. We made that much harder than necessary. Wolves are in trouble if that’s a good performance for them…
It was a sub standard performance. Our energy seemed drained. Wolves fans will be complaining we were there for the taking. And we were except the world’s no 1 had other ideas. But if we play poorly and win, that’s a great sign.
The missile from Kamara was fit to win any game. Top bins. Keeper no chance. Up until that point, I didn’t think Kamara was up to much. Felt the same way about T’mans. But worst of all for me was Rogers, who I thought had a shocker. He kept losing the ball and looked gassed very early on.
Our record after European games is crap. So getting 3 points today was a bonus. And much needed with the games coming up in December. Chelsea, The Arse, Forest, Palace, Spurs all failed to win this weekend and Citeh only managed an overtime winner. Europe does take its toll.
We move on to 24 points and got our 4th place back. Cause for celebration. Another great weekend assured and the bar is open. This is a fabulous run we’re on and if we pick up anything from Brighton on Weds, I’ll be delighted.
Must also say that Wolves in desperation, like Leeds last week just resorted to kicking and fouling. Kavanagh let them carry on with it all game and the endless fouling killed the game as a spectacle. If this is all the Dingles have, they’re doomed.
Unai has worked miracles again ,when you think sancho guissand watkins and elliot have only 2 goal contributions between them in 20games,
What is wrong with Watkins pre season he was flying 6goals I think now he doesn’t want the ball, for me watkins unless he turns form on its head he has 6 weeks to save his world cup dreams
Was thinking about this at the weekend. Hadn’t thought about him hiding, but Ollie of old would be desperate to get scoring again.
It’s so hard to explain given your point about how good he looked in the summer. I’d have thought any hangover/pouting would be processed by now and he could simply ask for a move. He has to know the only way to get going is to get more chances.
As an outsider looking in, it seems to me he’s carrying an injury which Tuchel alluded to when questioned about his absence of the latest England squad. His pace is down more than the ageing process might otherwise do. If injured, it is obviously being managed as he’s still selected on match days.
Another factor concerns Villa being set up more defensively to cure the amount of goals we had been shipping. Which in turn limits the amount of goal scoring opportunities in attack as shown by our diminished xG stats.
I still look at it as he is carrying a niggle. His running is ok but his dribbling is very cumbersome of late. Hopefully it’s something that can be cured, instead of him being James Chester’ed.
One other thing, following on the lack of a goal scorer thread. I think we are a Marcus Rashford away from being nailed on top 4. If we could send back Elliott and Sancho (who is my current pet peeve) and bring in a Duran/Rashford impactful livewire, it would light up our season.
Ah yes Henry, a flyer who can beat a FB on either side. Such guys exist, Unai must know some. Bailey when he was hot was about the best Unai has had.
I’m reading in the Athletic that Christian Benteke is leaving and out of contract at DC United this winter. He’s going to turn 35, but would he be a useful signing as a backup for Watkins? I’ve heard that he has very fond memories of Villa Park.
Barks out for 3 months with knee injury according to Unai. Bummer.
So now we have clarity about Ollie. Unai says he’s been carrying knee pain for about 16 months and his training schedule needs careful management. Surgery apparently is not required. We expect him to be named in the squad for Brighton tonight. It explains what most people thought was his problem before this confirmation. Best wishes for a full recovery Ollie.
Interesting. That’s a long stretch to have only now said anything. That would take us back through the CL games he didn’t start (to much questioning/consternation).
Well that certainly was hard to take. Seemed more than obvious it was a goal kick.
Brighton 2 – Dozy Half Soaked Lot 0
Ollie fights off Guessand in the box to score. Fair play Ollie
Phew…good time for Ollie to notch even if it wasn’t a thing of beauty.
Welcome back, Ollie.
Well done hopalong. 2-2. Best we sub him off now ready for the next game.
For all Brighton’s industry, a mishap from a corner that wasn’t and an own goal.
Wow crazy game. This ref is an absolute tnuc. We are too soft for these rules. Brilliant from the lads to get back to 2-2 after two very soft goals conceded.
In amongst all that craziness was a very meek, half hearted performance that’s still too regular for this manager and club.
Buzzing for Ollie, those were two proper number 9 goals. Hope we can step it up and claim the 3 points now. Go for this because Arsenal on Saturday will be a stretch.
As well as their first not being a corner, Maatsen should’ve had a penalty. Clear contact on Maatsen’s boot without getting the ball…how is that not a penalty? I also think this shows why Maatsen should’ve played last Sunday and Digne should be playing today.
Get in Onana
Tough guy header at far post by Onana. What on earth did Emery do at HT? Totally different Villa.
I still think (based on a comment from Simeone, who was saying he wanted something similar) that Emery wants calmer first halves. He’s fine unleashing them in the second, but I think he wants to limit the high-intensity, end-to-end stuff. And I’m guessing some of it has to do with load management.
Definitely agree with that. Keeping players fit decides 90% of your season. You can see it with the way very few players ever play back to back 90 minutes. Ange crocked his squad playing basketball tactics and was out on his ear. With an ageing squad it’s vital to manage the miles
Got to say that Villa look a lot more secure with Digne at LB.
Assist bt POTM Watkins. Yet another Melon goal.
Makes me wonder what Villa could do if they played well. I usually write that the goalkeeper has kept us in the first half. Makes a change to write that Ollie kept us in the first half. The whole game seemed to be a bit messy from both sides. Miracle that we one. Perhaps we prefer chaos to control!
Miracle that we WON.
At 30 minutes, I was hoping not to clobber the goal differential too much.
Yeah, I had to step away about the 60th minute…was checking my phone, still 3-2, kept expecting 3-3 every time, then I saw the final. That was wild. Can’t wait to see the final 30. And I guess my nerves are glad I can watch knowing the outcome.
Wow, wow, wow. Exhilarating, uplifting, I’m on fire. That’s what you call a comeback away from home. Ollie somehow got us in at HT level, don’t know how we managed it. Well a throw from Bizot to Rogers, a long ball forward and Ollie buried it in the onion bag is how.
A substitution to end all substitutions? Melon on for 50 seconds and hammers in the winner. Onana using his height to get a goal too. The first 2 Brighton goals were extremely lucky. A crap referee decision and an OG. Bizot awful for their first goal, brilliant at the death.
Together with so many other results that went our way, up to 3rd in the table. Yaaay. Great journey home for the away support.
As mentioned by Lifers above, we do seem to stroll about in the first half then step things up in the second. I wondered at HT whether Albion could sustain their energy levels as they did put so much effort into the first half. We got our answer during the second period.
Thought Rogers was poor first half and then he pulls out that pass to Ollie for the leveller. So pleased that Ollie has got back onto the gold standard. A great win. A great result. A great night. I’m well stoked.
Eight wins out of nine. We’re on a roll. COYVB.
I’m chuffed with that. Genuine qualify after a very timid first 40 minutes. Have to say I didn’t think we’d have the gas in the tank to come back from 2-0, so full credit to the lads. Great subs as well. They were much more engaged in the second half and deserved the win. S/O Bizot for that worldie at the end.
With 9 points from tricky games, we can play without anxiety vs Arsenal knowing there’s a ‘rest’ game on Thursday. That was a key 3 points tonight.
Quality points, big win. It’s crucial we made such good work of this run of fixtures. Max points minus Pool, no frustrating draws, wins after Europe…all you can ask for.
The morning after and I’m still glowing. What a night. The away support was magnificent even after going 2-0 down the noise levels remained high. Delighted with Ollie turning in Maatsen’s cross to reduce the arrears. When the 6 minutes to HT overtime board went up we got a corner in the 7th minute. Brighton somehow cleared it but there was a suspicion of hand ball. Think the ref played on because VAR was looking at it. Bizot saved the breakaway and threw the ball to Rogers. Into minute 8 and he launched a long ball forward for Ollie to get his second. It set off pandemonium in the away end.
When Onana headed home a corner in front of the Villa fans there were scenes. Limbs everywhere. As for Malen, he needs to buck his ideas up. He needed 50 odd seconds to score FFS. Cue bedlam.
Work, life…I’ve not managed to get a new post up in time, so I’ll just go with this quote from Unai:
“ In the August transfer window, we were perhaps the most punished team. We couldn’t spend money until the last moment, to get some players in on loan. I was so disappointed in that moment, and we were frustrated.
“But when we got the moment when everyone was here – and we could say ‘this is our season’. And the only thing we have. The only responsibility we had. We spoke about consistency – and the response was now there is no doubt, everyone is in the same place.”
“The only responsibility we had…”
I love this man.
COYVB
Low right foot volleyed thunderbolt from Cash through goalie’s legs. Goaly nearly lost his ghoulies there.
That’s the way we like it, nice and competitive. They’re well up for it. Cracking finish from Cash.
I guess Youri won’t last the 90. McGinn might, as we have Basel on Thursday. Think Onana and Bouba will play the 90.
The key is to keep the intensity and get a 2nd if the chance comes.
Hardest working player (SJM) replaced by laziest player (Sancho).
My boy Buendia ratted out a goal with the last kick of the game. My POTM just for that. Miracle goal, deserved win.
BOUNCING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EMI BUENDIA…….FROM ARGENTINA…..
Why do I go down Villa Park? For days like today that don’t come around very often. VP at its finest. Packed to the rafters. Rocking and seething. Brummies love a tussle when the big Laandan teams are here. We gorge when we win, it’s the end of the world when we lose. And today we GORGED.
Was on very early here (5:30), so I decided to trust in Emery and the lads. Woke up, checked the score, and now watching the recording.
Brilliant result.
And had a feeling 2-1 would be score if we were to win.
It was a high class match. Two teams at the top of their game. The atmosphere was electric. When Pau crossed a ball about 10 minutes from HT, it flew off a defenders head. Cash raced on to it ahead of Eze and smashed it past Raya. VP exploded. Bedlam. Limbs everywhere. Indescribable.
Straight after HT it was the Arse fans on fire. Onana lost the ball in midfield and it was sent forward down our left, crossed and buried. Very clinical. Chances came and went both ends. The world’s No. 1 denied them with a finger tip save. Malen then nearly scored at the other end. I was shocked he missed it. Next it was Madueke’s turn to hit the side netting.
And then it happened. The overtime period was spent. The last attack. A ball bouncing around in the area, players with chaotic efforts to shoot or clear. Then Emi bangs it into the onion bag. VP detonated. Pandemonium, delirium, bedlam, riotous scenes everywhere. SUCH DRAMA. Fucking hell.
The magnitude of this win will take some time to sink in. I’m currently incapable of sensible discussion. There is no coming back from that last shot. The Arse were gutted. The stadium thundered. Such days are rare. To be gorged on all week.
For me, Maatsen was excellent. His pace was needed against Saka. The midfield all worked like Trojans. Ollie chased everything. The back 4 restricted the current best team in UK to scraps. And once again the Arse has felt the sting of Unai and AVFC.
A fabulous weekend will now kick off as the bar at home opens. I’m on fire.
So pleased you and the faithful were treated to that, Plug. Just finished 1st half, best I’ve seen us look. Assured, taking the sting out of them, nice tackles.
Defo look like we belong.
Just finished. Really excellent performance. After the equalizer, we could’ve wilted, but rode it out, grabbed back some equilibrium, showed threat, and never quit creating chances.
That final scramble and brilliant shot from Emi…the game deserved that.
And we really did hold them at arm’s length. Looks like the ball Emi got the barest of touches on was probably always going over.
Two great results and coming into form.
Fresh page up.
