Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool: Back To the Big Stage

Aston Villa 4-2 Liverpool: Back To the Big Stage

It wouldn’t be Villa, even under Unai Emery, if you didn’t have heartburn. A season of ups and downs saw Villa wobbling down the stretch, but somehow they contrived to dispatch Forest with aplomb in the Europa semis, slump to a draw at Turf Moor, then produce a rousing performance in what turned out to be a Champions League play-in.

I’d have taken a draw.

Instead, Villa tapped into that semifinal energy and ended up frustrating then soundly beating the Anfield boys. If either side was going to score four, you wouldn’t have bet on it being Villa. But for the second time in three matches they did just that, and Slot’s men were left flopping and forlorn and looking over their shoulders. Villa closed out the home fixtures on an almighty high, delivering a cathartic victory over a side that, like United, we somehow manage to always come up short against.

But Friday under the lights it was finally different. The big guns stepped up, Emery was scowling then beaming, and the Villa Park faithful were deservedly delirious. When the coat came off you knew it was over.

I’d not given much thought to the game because too much was riding on it. When the fixtures were released, you’d have hoped things would’ve been decided before the final two installments. And they should’ve been. But somehow Villa managed to advance in Europe while stagnating in the league, squandering the buffer they’d amassed and just about hanging on. Then Liverpool came calling. You’d be forgiven for expecting more heartbreak.

But Villa flipped the script. They stuck to the plan, weathered a first half where they started brightly then saw Liverpool assert growing control. Kept at it and grabbed the lead almost out of nowhere, regathered themselves after getting pulled back, and showed the vastly more expensively assembled guests what heart looks like.

No final-day drama, no looking for help. And now Villa can go play for silverware without the weight of qualification hanging over them.

Emery played his strongest available side and it turned out to be the right call. Given I hadn’t really thought about it, I wasn’t surprised. Take the chance in front of you. When Rogers, who’d been so far off it, found himself and calmly stroked home the opener, well…It’s why you stick with players.

So Villa went out, notched a memorable victory, buoyed their self-belief, and now look to round out a season with a major trophy. Despite all the wobbles and injuries.

Naturally we know it’s largely all down to Emery. However he’s maddened us at times, look where we are. Look at the squad, the lack of depth. The budget with which it’s been assembled. The stalwarts like McGinn, Watkins, and Konsa out there vindicating Deano. Indeed, the only real stain in recent history was Purslow doing Dean dirty and bringing in little Steven. But then, we wouldn’t have Emery.

We also have to credit the players, however much we might find some of them wanting. They’ve taken it all on board and given everything they have. I’m not sure they can believe what they’ve accomplished. But this year, when the chips were down, they’ve produced their two best performances. They just might’ve turned that corner in their own minds.

Obviously we haven’t won anything yet, but we’ve shown we’re not going away and, perhaps more important, secured vital extra income and gloss. Emery has put his stamp on Villa, bucking the restraints and narratives. He’s taken what he had and made it better. There are obviously conversations to come, but for now, Istanbul is all that matters, and that warm glow we feel having beaten a famous nemesis to book our return to the world’s biggest stage.

It’s all rather remarkable.

Over to you.

Accurate write up John. It has been all rather remarkable as you say. I’ve been buzzing all day. It’s so nice to step back and watch the almighty scramble going on below us from a safe position. We’re in P4 now and might just stay there. Red scouse have Brentford on the final day at Anfield who are also in with a shout of European football. That fixture has all the makings of humdinger.

Of course, I had to watch the highlights again. When Unai flung his coat on the floor after SJM’s coup de grace I noticed Buendia had an icepac strapped around his left calf. Hope that’s just precautionary. Now bring on the Germans.

Never watch Villa on an empty stomach. Top up stomach contents with Gaviscon tablets and wash down with bicarb if the acid gets too bad. Been there done that. Also have to take lansoprazole long term. Consume Villa in moderation!

Hope I don’t need all that medication on Weds, 656.

I see Cash is talking a good game about the final on Weds according to the official website. Also listened to an Ollie interview where he speaks about leaving it all out on the pitch against Freiburg. He also said he’d be watching the video of our ’82 triumph for inspiration. I respectfully suggest he does that with the rest of the squad to take on board the effort and desire required to win it.

There will be no silverware if the team doesn’t turn up en masse from minute one and empty the tank. You don’t get a second chance in a final. Nobody remembers the losers. Being German, our opponents are never beaten until the final whistle blows. Be warned Villa and step up to the plate.

My sincere hope is that they now understand that if they go all out they’re dangerous and that it’s the only way to play at this point.

The referee for Weds is Frenchman Francois Letexier. Here’s an interesting write up about him from the UEFA website. Seems it’s not just the team coaches who do their homework on the opposition. This guy does too. So beware Cash and Konsa, feeling a touch and falling over will cost us big time.

Not sure that the refs should “know our playing style”, just stick to knowing the rules and apply them equally to both sides.

If he has been watching, hopefully he’s noticed how little gamesmanship the World’s Number One actually employs, so doesn’t give him a none sense yellow card for “winding up the tea lady”.

On the other hand, some of our previous managers could learn a thing or two about preparation from this ref…goodness knows that we’ve seen enough Villa teams over the years that looked as if they only ever met up on Saturdays at 2:55pm

Yeah, consistency is everything, obviously. It seems to me that the refs we’ve had in the various Euro competitions have been more willing to let play flow and less tolerant of antics. A generalization, but with a couple of exceptions I’ve felt less hard-done by in most of our Euro games than the fluctuations week to week in the PL.

And if there is something to be learned by reading up on the ref, I can only assume Emery has someone on it.

And I have to say, apart from the cheap fouls Konsa in particular likes to draw, we’re a pretty clean side and almost every player seems to rely on the ‘he breathed on me from behind’ to relieve pressure. Could affect SJM, too. Sometimes he gets a lot of the calls when protecting and turning, sometimes not so much.

Overall, I think a clean match works to our advantage.

Yeah a clean game would definitely suit us. I’d really love to see a ref who doesn’t let the opponents manhandle Ollie, SJM and especially Morgan. The oppo usually seem to get away with UFC grapples

I can’t believe the level of grappling that’s allowed

Today is the day. Haven’t got a ticket so haven’t made it to Istanbul. Envious of all those Villa fans who have. For me, this is the biggest game since 1982, surpassing FA cup finals, League Cup finals and promotions. Will be watching events unfold from the UK. Time to deliver Villa boys.

Indeed, Plug. Such a big occasion that I’ve even got another fresh page up.
