Here we are, hours away from what is most likely Villa’s biggest match since 1982: A European cup final. It’s not the big one, but it’s big enough. And the 30-year wait for silverware of any kind might finally come to an end.
And what a fitting end it would be, the undisputed master of the this tournament taking a side bereft of identity, reshaping them, and leading them step by step back into Europe, to quarter- and semifinals, and now the kind of occasion the grand old club deserves. Another German opponent, as well.
Having gone down as meekly as a team as team could after being teased by Lerner’s arrival and sixth-place finishes under Martin O’Neill, it was Dean Smith who ultimately came to the rescue. A 10-match winning streak. A second consecutive play-off final. Redemption. Never mind an escape from financial calamity. And it was Smith who laid the foundations of this squad: Emi Martinez, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Ollie Watkins. Emi Buendia, bless his competitive heart. We’ll thank Steve Bruce for Super John McGinn and the cabbage that will live in history. Douglas Luiz might not be starting after returning, but he was as responsible as anyone on the pitch for the miraculous Covid survival run. Ross Barkley was another of Smith’s rolls of the dice, however little he’s actually on the pitch. We’ll forgive him dear old Leon. Didn’t look quite so bad back in the day.
From the heights under Deadly Doug to the nadir under Randy Lerner and Dr. Tony (Xia) and then rescue by Nassef Sawaris and Wes Edens. From Houllier to McLeish, Lambert, Sherwood, Garde, Di Matteo, Bruce and finally Deano. The miserable reign of Steven Gerrard rounds out the list and without his sour ineptitude we’d not have ended up with Unai Emery.
It isn’t the worst or best story in footballing history, but for supporters it’s held just about everything. Except major honours. There’s been loads of heartbreak and resignation, cynicism and optimism. That play-off final was the second-most important victory in my fairly considerable years following the Villa, certainly more meaningful than a League Cup.
And can anyone really believe it’s been 20 years since Lerner bought the club? I know was a lot younger and better looking then.
Now, though, there’s a chance to cap Emery’s Villa revival with an impressive finish. To get the word ‘champions’ back into the club’s vocabulary and mentality.
Anything can happen in a final, of course. I think I speak for most Villans in saying that if we show up like we did against Forest and Liverpool, we’re in with a very good shout. It’s about mentality, players wanting it, believing they’re worthy of it, and knowing they have to leave absolutely everything on the pitch in Istanbul. We know Emery wants it and will have a game plan that gives them every chance. The players have shown they’ve got the necessary resilience.
So come on you Villa boys. It’s right in front of you. Go grab it. For you and for us.
Over to you.
Europa League Final: Freiburg vs. Villa

NOW IS THE TIME! I totally agree with your penultimate paragraph. If we play as we can, and as we have, we will win.
Team news in. Onana on the bench.
Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Lindelof, Tielemans; McGinn, Buendia, Rogers; Watkins.
Subs: Bizot, Wright, Mings, Elliott, Garcia, Abraham, Sancho, Luiz, Maatsen, Onana, Bogarde, Bailey.
Freiburg XI: Atubolu, Kubler, Ginter Lienhart, Treu, Eggestein, Hofler, Beste, Manzambi, Grifo, Matanovic.
Subs: Muller, Huth, Jung, Osterhage, Scherhant, Holer, Irie, Philipp, Gunter, Makengo, Rosenfelder, Ogbus,
Out of the gate a challenge you’d probably expect for a foul to be given in PL.
Excellent early yellow
Now they’re totting up against us.
They do like a triple somersault and pike….
Get in Youri. Beautiful shot, great routine.
T’mans long range stinger. Epic!
Emi you beauty!
Buendia bonkers long range curler from the right to far corner of net.
So calm, weaker foot. He’s scored some lovely goals this season.
2 nil up at half time. Not saying anything else – except those were effing good goals.
Two belting shots. Fit to win any cup final. Stuff of dreams.
Goals like those get arses off seats. Bedlam behind WN1.
Pure quality, players rising to the occasion. Hell, I lost my mind off the couch, never mind the stands.
Now, concentration, smart decisions. Freiburg have nothing to lose, counters will be there.
Magnificent.
Behave. Nifty class from Buendia on left sideline sets up Rogers near post ram in.
Oh I thought that was in.
Good move, Unai, bringing on Dougie and Ty.
God that feels good.
Watkins endless aggressive running and old school target man C/F play. T’mans supreme technical ability. BUT my POTM was Buendia and his Xfactor ratting style play.
It was good to see Villa just keep going to the end and not going into energy saving mode. It was also good to see that playing across the back line kept to a minimum both tonight and against Liverpool. Will this be a long term Emery plan from now on.
I’ve never seen so many spectacular Villa goals in one season in all my years. Anyone want to bet against Villa in the deckchair final against shitty on Sunday?
Deckchair Final….when’s the last time we could say that? Double CL qualification.
EUROPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS VILLA…..
A European Cup final, in a port city, at a stadium of 40k+ size, German opposition playing in red, lifting the trophy, Does that sound familiar?
Destiny
CAMPEONES, CAMPEONES, OLE, OLE, OLE…..
A cagey first 40 minutes and then the wild man of Borneo struck. A corner move that left Tielemans with the freedom of the park. His first time blast was a missile into the net.
In 3 minutes of first half stoppage time, Emi runs along the right side of the box towards goal and sends another left footed missile into the top bins.
Bedlam erupted behind WN1.
THE VILLA BOYS FROM ASTON…..WE TRAVEL NEAR AND FAR….
About the hour mark came a fast break. SJM first times a pass to Buendia. Emi runs down the left wing and swings over a low cross which Rogers meets and plants it in the onion bag.
Pandemonium breaks out in front of him.
You should write a leader or two, Plug.
I sent an email. Email me if not received.
I’m happy for us, yeah, but I’m really happy for that core…for them to take us back up and finally win something? Legends.
THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AWAITS FOR ME…….
Cup finals should never be this straightforward. People will look at the gulf in quality between the two teams but it still took exceptional goals to beat Freiburg.
SJM hoists the silverware, even HRH was ecstatic. I am not going to be able to sleep tonight.
Been the hallmark of the season, and I’m happy that players got their extraordinary moments. Morgan’s was the only ‘regular’ goal, yet still a fantastic finish.
From the post-match commentary, and I’ll use this again:
The supporters knew it was a big club, but most of them had never seen it.
Well they’ve seen it now John. They’ve tasted glory. There’s nothing like it. This is what it’s all about.
It was great to see Nassef and Wes on the podium. This is the result of their work. Unai now has FIVE Europa cups. All with teams containing villa in their name, And he’s maximized the income from this season’s competition with 13 wins from 15 games. We can get another £3 million quid on Sunday if we manage a point in the deckchair game at Citeh.
And we’re up to 17th in the UEFA coefficient table. Above Spurs. At the start of next season we’ll be up to 12th when the points gained 5 years ago are dropped. Above Chelsea then. All accomplished with 3 years work in Europe from Unai. Take a bow sir.
Not only will we be the new spurs (John), we will be the new chelsky.
On pocket money
To your comments, Plug, seeing NSWE enjoying it was great, seeing Emery on (Onana’s?) shoulders smiling in front of the supporters…priceless. I don’t think what he’s delivered is lost on him. Such a competitor. And genius manager. To deliver CL again and a trophy from where Emery took over is just about unthinkable.
How good does this feel? The morning after and I’m glowing with pride. Eight years ago we lost promotion to Fulham at Wembley and the consequences became public knowledge, skint, owing the taxman £4 million, selling any saleable assets and looking at administration. NSWE saw the opportunity and stated an aim to be in Europe within 5 years. Five years later we were in the Europa Conference League.
Spud gave way to Deano who gave way to Gerrard who gave way to Unai. That final appointment was critical to our success. He (and NSWE) will be revered forever in Villa folklore. Hoping this silverware is only the start of a new collection and we dine at the top table for many years to come.
Feels fabulous…to actually follow through, get over the hump, that’s everything we haven’t done. Exorcises some very persistent demons.
What a time to be a Villan! Brilliant performance on the night, and some goals that will be in montages for decades to come. And how great is it to see Emery let his hair down and screaming UTV on the parade…this is priceless.
Speaking of the parade, it seems that on Sunday, some players may need deck chairs to keep them vertical, and who can blame them. They are a legendary group of Villans and it’s good to see them enjoy and celebrate, it doesn’t matter what happens on Sunday, they got the job done and our season finished on Wednesday night in Istanbuuuul!
Couldn’t agree more. Times like this last week are rare indeed. Nothing is going to wipe the smile off my face.
Concerning the deckchair comment, well Unai’s presser pretty much agreed with you. The bottom line….. we’ve qualified for the Champions League twice this season.
We have sold 2 players already. Donyell Malen to Roma for £21m and Enzo Barrenechea to Benfica for £12m.
Malen was loaned to Roma in January with a permanent sale confirmed if certain conditions were met. They have been so he’s now their contracted player. The only question here is whether the sale price gets included in our current year accounts or whether it actually happens on July 1st which puts it in next years’ accounts. Either way, we’ve got our money back on him.
Barrenechea joined us from Juventus in the Dougie Luiz manoeuvre to avoid contravening PSR. He was loaned out to Valencia last season and this season he was loaned to Benfica with an obligation to buy if certain conditions were met. They have been, so he is now their contracted player. A complication has occurred. The manager who loaned him was sacked half way through the season and Mourinho took over and although Mourinho continued to play him, reports from Spain say Valencia want to loan him again for next season but Benfica only wish to sell him for £12m to get their money back. We will find out next week whether Mourinho is joining Real Madrid or staying with Benfica. Either way, Enzo has been sold and we’ve got our money back. Likewise, not sure whether the sale will appear in this year’s accounts or next years’.
We will find out in the next month or two who else will be going along with our current loan players, Sancho, Elliott and Luiz. And we watch with interest who comes in. Around easter time last year, Heck revealed that he expected the 24/25 revenue to come in between £350m and £360m. We eventually found out it was £378m. But I’ve not seen any whispers about what the revenue amount is likely to be for the current year. No clues yet from Damian Vidagany.
Team news against Citeh. Both teams have named much changed sides. Villa with 8 changes. Konsa, Tammy and Rogers not in the squad:
Bizot; Garcia, Lindelof, Mings, Maatsen; Barkley, Luiz; Bailey, Buendia, Bogarde; Watkins.
Subs: Wright, Cash, McGinn, Tielemans, Digne, Torres, Onana, Hemmings, Burrowes
Come on Brentford and Everton!!!
Garcia sort of headed clear from the near post but it dropped onto semenyo’s shooting foot for a shitty goal.
WHO CARES?
The pressure is off for both sides so the shitty players technical ability is clearly ahead of that of the Villa players. Garcia looking very shaky and nervy.
WHO CARES?
WN2 makes a point blank save.
YAWN!
Agreed 656. The deckchairs are out and the sunglasses are on. Buckets and spades as well. Who cares?
YUP – DEFFO
We weaved a few pretty patterns in their half for the last 3 or 5 minutes of the first half and actually won a corner (was it our first?) but the whistle blew before we could take it. We were robbed! We would have definately have equalised (??????).
SNORE!
I think we are going to be all round good eggs and give red scouse a chance to go 4th, thus giving our league the extra eurocrap place.
SAY THANK YOU PREMIER LEAGUE.
OH dear, Garcia subbed off. That’s a bad look unless he is injured.
Yeah he’s another PSR signing that can be sent to the glue factory
Told you! We got another corner and Ollie scored a ping pong predater goal.
Hahah. That has to be one of the most creative goal celebrations of the season! You love to see it.
Bailey seems to be playing for a new contract (or haircut). End product hasn’t been great, but I haven’t seen this energy and ball control for a while
Still an embarrasing falling over cry baby plonker!
FLIPPING HECK! Ollie rams his way through for another goal. VAR wanted to rule it out but Ollie was onside by an uncut shitty toenail.
SUDDENLY I CARE.
This is a very impressive second half. Maybe alcohol does has beneficial properties after all
Correction. The corrupt linesman wanted to rule it out. VAR saved us.
They may have grown a little bit.
Good job Mings cut his fingernails, Foden goal offside.
TEE HEE
Shitty showing their spoilt scummy side as just for once, VAR crapped on them for a change.
Wow. Did not have seeing out the season beating Pool and City (away) and sending Pep packing with a defeat on my bingo card.
Thought we were going to be a ceremonial sacrifice, tbh. This side has found something. Great way to end the season.
ROPE-A-DOPE VILLA. Folded up the deck chairs at HT and smacked them with an Ollie left and right hook landed right on the chin.
VILLA DO THE DOUBLE OVER CITEH. Now our guys can hit the beach and relax.
Maybe we caught them at the right time. Who cares. At HT I was prepared to just take the positives….Errr…..well only 1 goal down, Garcia received an education…..
But at FT, we’ve nailed P4 and the extra £3million or so quid. Ollie has got another couple of goals. We’ve pissed on Citeh’s wake. Oh dude, my weekend is complete.
Here’s to you Unai Emery, Villa loves you more than you will know…..
When the fixtures came out, we looked at the last 2 games and hoped that our objectives would be met before those 2 games. Huh, an extra 6 points gained. Brilliant season Villa. I’m stoked.
Rampaging Ollie dragged 10 man Villa back into the game and kickstarted the Emery method. Glad Villa tore Shitty a new posterior oriface before they went all soppy and mushy saying goodbye to stones and bernardo.
PLEASE NO MORE BAILEY. It’s just not funny any more. The pre-emptive slaggings stopped working more than a year ago.
No extra eurocrap place for the league. Yah boo sucks for trying to keep Villa down and preserving the sky6.
Villa dragged themselves to 4th and a major cup competition despite a horrendous injury list, a financial strangling and a non stop deluge of bad luck and fecal matter. Can this ageing group go again next season.
All in all an amazing season. Villa for the World Cup next.
It has been amazing. And here I was depressed for a few weeks at how I thought it was all slipping away.
A touch of class from our boys yesterday as they lined up in the guard of honour to send Bernardo and Stones on their way. Shows respect to our opponents.
Compare that with the Citeh fans chanting “cheat, cheat, cheat” when Foden had his goal correctly ruled out for offside. Pot, kettle and black. And whilst on that subject, the EPL really MUST now make a decision on the 115 charges still outstanding after how many years? Time to act during the closed season, the can has been kicked down the road for too long and EPL credibility is in the gutter. They’ve had no problem dishing out points deductions to other teams, the EFL had no problems doing the same with plenty of their teams, even throwing Soton out of the play offs. The Scottish FA didn’t blink dumping Rangers down 4 divisions. UEFA don’t mess around banning Juve and other teams from European competitions. Just ask Palace. So why are the EPL suits inactive?
Yeah, there’s very little to dislike about our players, manager, and ownership. No one will get absolutely everything right, but it’s a class organization.
The Slot machine has broken. A £450m spend has done for him. Seems crazy to me that someone is sacked for winning the Premier League and then making the Champions League the following season.
Exactly why one should never desire to manage one of the “big” clubs. Perfection is expected and you are sacked for anything less. Not the kind of job I’d want!
Yeah, all of this “unacceptable” talk…It’s too much.
So, I’m going to admit I enjoyed Arsenal being gutted there at the end…not very sporting and I suppose I could view it more broadly as a defeat for the PL, but I can’t quite get myself there.
Double Ditto
Triple ditto. I just can’t stand the manager and they have a vocal set of incredibly annoying fans who seem to dislike Emery because we didn’t let them beat us 2 years ago…
Very selfishly, I’d rather we win a few more European trophies before any new names are engraved

A Season Review from Plug is now up. Great read and the contribution is very appreciated, Plug!
