Carabao Crash-out

Posted by John Clark | Sep 17, 2025 | AVL Blog, Match Reviews | 45

Carabao Crash-out

I don’t suppose losing on penalties to a Premier League side that’s beaten you once already really counts as ‘crashing out’ of a cup, but it’s still an early exit and despite finally scoring a goal, another uninspiring performance on the whole.

Me, I’d kind of hoped that changes would provide a spark, and maybe in a couple places it did. Elliott managed to find the net, which isn’t a bad thing mentally for the side, and we really should’ve had two but for a post and Cash maybe erring in going for goal when Ollie was square and wide open. And to be fair, while Brentford were tidy and quick in passages, they didn’t really tear open an improvised side, and what can you say about their goal: beautifully taken, but 1 in 1000.

So, I won’t come close to proclaiming any sort of moral victory, just the observation that the feeling after a result (and I did not feel good) isn’t always reflective of the action. For us, I’m sure it was more reflective of context.

Opting to rest Ollie, Morgan, and Youri (who maybe had a knock since he wasn’t on the bench) and hand starts to Donyell, Jadon, Evann, and Harvey, Emery looked to freshen things up and get valuable minutes into some legs. Cohesion wasn’t necessarily going to be the defining feature of such a lineup.

The bigger issue many have alluded to is the ‘vibe’, and as I mentioned, I don’t really know what to say. I can speculate all day long and maybe there’d be something accurate in there. Based on what we were hearing from a couple players as the window was winding down, I still think the group was unsettled by Ramsey having to leave and probably Martinez’s desire for an exit. I’m guessing that was all bigger behind the scenes than what we could see, as was maybe the hope a real impact signing could be made. Maybe there were others thinking Villa have reached their summit and that they want to move on to bigger and greener pastures.

Hard to know if players aren’t openly pushing.

Of course, we don’t care because Villa are paying them wages, they have a job to do, and they aren’t doing it very well at the moment. Guessand’s heavy first touches reminded me of Bailey. Rogers struggled for a bit to show any familiarity with a football. Ollie was isolated but seemed game. Buendia once again provided a spark because he always looks to play quickly, something the side desperately need. By nature, that won’t always come off, but it does lead to more opportunity. Sancho and Maatsen, you’d have thought they could do a bit more, one or two more dangerous balls, the odd drive and shot. Bogarde once again looked largely overwhelmed.

The other bit that stuck out was how poor any longer-range distribution was, definitely far below the Bees’ percentages. Perhaps it’s not something Emery & Co prioritize, though of his signings, you’d think Pau and Tielemans could deliver (and have). But there just weren’t any particularly dangerous balls, and on the odd occasion when there almost was, it was the weight or angle that was lacking.

An easy tweak for Unai would be to simply encourage more balls for the likes of Guessand, Malen, and Sancho to run onto.

I also wasn’t terribly impressed with the ‘aggression’. We seem to half-commit, pull out, basically looking like the players don’t want to pick up a knock. A couple of exceptions, naturally, but not terribly combative in 50-50s, and often a step slow, as if weighing whether they’d get there or even if they wanted to.

Which means my ‘advice’ stands, and that’s for Emery to encourage them to loosen up, play with freedom and bite. That’s what seems to be lacking. I don’t know what the dressing room dynamics are, but my message would also include going out and proving you’ve got what it takes in terms of commitment and pointing out the lack of it in film sessions.

They’ve not done themselves lasting damage to this point, but they’re rapidly running out of wiggle room. Much more can be said, and I’ll leave that to the comments.

Over to you.

Have to agree with you John on the need to mix it up by using some long balls more often. The ball travels faster than any player so you make it do the work. At least those are the words drummed into me as a kid. It needs a player to make a run into space and also the player on the ball to spot the run. Then it’s down to skill. Sounds easy, but watching Dippers v Athletic Madrid tonight both teams were not shy of playing a long ball forward. It’s a weapon.

As you point out, tackling is another important area where we seem to under perform. I lose count of the times we get out fought on the 50/50 balls. Can’t decide whether it’s down to training ground requirements or lack of quality coaching. Then there’s the set pieces which ultimately cost us in the Carabao. Offensively we don’t seem to create much and defensively we’re too open. I hate zonal marking but man marking needs intelligence. The number of times I see a shorter Villa player marking a tall opponent whilst our big guys are standing spare. Don’t understand why we don’t match up opponents by size.

Of the new guys, Elliott looks the most useful right now. And a word about Barks who has been missing for some time now “due to a personal issue”. Hope that’s not another Rossgate type situation.

I have to believe the coaching is good, Plug. Emery certainly overachieved with Villarreal. To me, seems like there’s some gambles on midrange players, and still the bigger mismatches.

You do have to look at the bargains Brentford and others have found and wonder about that. I just think that we’ve maybe reached our ceiling unless we can buy ready-made successes, just like the teams around us. Rules not helping there.

When we come to dressing room, I’m sure we’ve all seen the recent talk that Ollie was very disappointed he didn’t get a move. He doesn’t look like *the* problem right now, but if we’re wondering about deeper rot…maybe there’s more than one who doubt we can do the necessary business.

How about a little bit of happy clapping? I would like to remind everyone about the aneamic start to the season that Ron Saunders’s championship winning side made before the gears engaged and went into winning machine mode.

We are just getting the obligatory bad patch out of the way.

Sunderland up next, who is fit who wants to play ,only questions that emery can answer me we need to change from 4231 to a 433
Martinez cash konsa mings matasen bogarde kamara mcginn elliot rogers and ramsay encourage both fullbacks to go forward cash used to half decent even scoring an odd goal or 2,,kamara has to be anchor man pushing bogarde and mcginn forward in support of front 3,stop this dancing o ball in our 18 conserving energy ,we don’t need to ,we have 5 subs, every match I watched last night had plenty long balls played plenty of fast pressing not our half arsed attempts, emery plan a is all used up ,3 years and completely found out,we still have some very good players it showed on international week but if emery persists with his style he will be gone for Halloween like big Ron, little and O’Neil managers that didn’t adapt

I could easily regurgitate everything from the article and comments, but instead I’ll do what I’ve been resisting…diving in to speculating about the source of the bad vibes.

You’d think even if one was disgruntled, for the 90 minutes that you are playing, you would feel some form of excitement that would be expressed by playing enthusiastically. Closing down quickly, putting some ooomph into a tackle, trying a trick, or a creative forwards pass…we don’t see any of that.

Which brings me onto Tyrone’s “you don’t know the half of it”. It does seem like a depressing place right now. There doesn’t seem to be any excitement or optimism on the pitch. Everything and everyone (including Emery) is 5 to 10% off their level, which is a chasm in professional sports. Like you mentioned we aren’t competing in the 50/50s – we’re even struggling with 60/40s (see Pau giving away the throw-in).

Something big just be happening. They are good players and are MUCH better than the garbage served up so far. Maybe they just need to feel sorry for themselves for a while in order to get over the funk and click back into the right mentality. The only time I’ve experienced it at work was when there was a big upper management screwup and it had financial effects throughout a 100+ employee business. You could feel the doom when you stepped into the office.

I can only imagine that they were told that the ride is over for now, players would be sold, and this is a lost season. Why else would the players look so lukewarm in their motivation.

Just on the tactics, Emery is an elite manager, so he must be wanting something else from what he sees on the pitch. But he has set them up wrongly all season, so he needs to do better: we have typically been a slow side in the last 18 months, with lots of passing around our GK and defenders. That needs to at least be mixed with sometimes playing balls forwards (long and short). The players are the ones that execute the plan, but Emery at least needs to give them the right instructions – and that has been missing for some time. If we make the other teams do some defending, there’s a higher chance of some good luck for us instead of against us. And that could provide a jump-start.

Have to agree, HD…Whatever it is, it seems to be affecting almost everyone. And like you, I’m hoping it’s a funk that we play through and get past.

I always have to fall back on the fact that the best thing players can do for themselves (to get moves or whatever) is just go out and play their best. Maybe it’s European nights that get their heads back on straight.

Rogers is getting pelters on line blogs etc,but to be fair he is relatively young palmer is going through same barren run,yet chelsea fans are still fully behind him,
Young players all go through poor spells, fergie was good at taking them out of team sending on holiday, where’s emery wants to keep playing them including players out of form
As for mings saying we don’t know the half of what’s happening, we don’t need to,he signed a new contract on thousands a week where’s in real life everybody is struggling with inflation cost of living, players have no excuse for not trying or their poor effort so far

Watched most of Newcastle match last night and it was clear why emery picked rashford over ollie 2 great goals he was quiet but who cares when you score 2
As for Newcastle they play 433 with a fluid front 3 which with our squad emery needs to consider, then I look at their players quite a fee nasty horrible players burns tripper gotdon etc even howe number 2 is a pr++k we are all too nice, which leads on to percy article in paper yesterday about how everyone at club is feeling sorry for themselves, time to grow a set themselves same players have performed wonderfully at times but also have produced some worst performances of all time, conference semi final ,Palace semi final utd last day of season couple v spurs,so we need some change but not to January at earliest now

I was delighted when Rashford was announced. Big wages aside. We knew we would get direct running and pace, even if there was no end product. As it was he had the end product and made Ollie look 2nd best. I expected Ollie to come back fit and firing, but he just really hasn’t shown that explosiveness. I guess it is partly to down to the rest looking so inept, but it’s a no-brainer who would be better right now.

Oh dear. One whole point wrested from 10 man prem newbies. Fumbling shambling Villa performance. Horrendous, anonymous miserable Watkins performance. Rogers almost as bad. Slight hint of promise in the left wing Maatson-Sancho combination. Even I see a mediocre (at best) season ahead. Is Emery any good at ground up rebuilds? I’m jealous of Everton having the Moyes football dinosaur.

Rogers is young it happens to young players but emery insisting on trying to play rogers into form is wrong g like what he done with Bailey last year, malen I feel sorry for not getting minutes so o natural sharpness,
Team selection inevery game along with substitute has rubbish by emery, beundi 60 mins today rubbish no where near quality for premier league

Well that was a bit of an embarrassing performance. It seems like it will be a struggle watching Villa for a while longer, at least.

With Unai walking off before the whistle, hopefully that signifies something snapping, and prompts a change in his approach as well as the player’s mood/attitude.

In as much as players are executing badly, they are carrying out Unai’s plan… passing the ball along our goal-line = Unai; Centre backs dribbling the ball up to the halfway line = Unai; not crossing the ball = Unai.

    It all needs a reset.

Finally, the attitude was naff overall, but Rogers had a stinker yday, and when he finally got hooked he just walzed off the pitch without acknowledging his replacement. We’ve said that there are precious few leaders amongst the players, Unai and the staff need to play a bigger role in keeping standards amongst the players, because lack of chemistry and funky attitudes have been a lingering theme for a while.

Missed this game so can’t comment on proceedings but Lifers comments above tell a sorry tale. And Unai is now throwing the players under the bus. I’m now looking for a reaction from the players against Bologna. They earn mega bucks, have great life styles so for the sake of the fans, they need to show real effort and commitment. SJM as captain needs to get hold of them and demand a response. Thurs could be a watershed.

It’s been pretty ugly. There is a sense of “going through the motions” about the team right now. For the last three years, our new players have all said that their former teammates spoke glowingly about the atmosphere at Villa. How can that change so quickly? The only way I can think of is that either some team leaders expected/wanted to leave and feel stuck here listening to the same tactical lectures they have been hearing over and over.

It would be interesting to have a couple of weeks with less talk and more intense physical training. Give them less to think about and let them play football for a spell and see if that relaxes then and lets the squad do what it does best.

Can’t say I’m surprised…Wasn’t sure whether Monchi was a long-term guy or not, number one. Two, I think they believe in Emery, but the business has turned out to be underwhelming, so your personnel guy is gonna be the fall guy. Three, warning shot for everyone.

Had a chance to catch up on some of the talk being published, which I thought was balanced, overall. Emery did catch some flak for the slowness of play, narrowness, etc. But players were getting it for looking lazy and non-combative.

But if your players (for whatever reason) are looking lazy and non-combative it’s hardly going to help tempo or anything else. Nothing works if that’s a basic issue.

Is that down to Emery? He’d gotten them to the CL, so I’m not sure how you’d suddenly turn and say something’s not working, etc. The “players feeling sorry for themselves” is the characterization that stuck with me and tracks with how I’m seeing it.
