FC Basel 1-2 Aston Villa

Posted by John Clark | Dec 12, 2025 | AVL Blog, Match Reviews | 93

FC Basel 1-2 Aston Villa

Villa notched another Europa League win, this time away to Basel. We even had royalty on hand in the form of Roger Federer. At the end of the night, Villa found themselves still third, down to goal differential again. Which has become sort of a thing.

At the beginning, it looked like Villa might easily address the shortfall. Composed, unhurried, winning the ball back with ease, Villa seemed like they could cruise to a 3- or 4-0 win. Alas.

There were a couple early warnings, but Evann Guessand made himself useful and scored a gritty and clever goal to put Villa up. But then predictably Basel got a bit more involved while Villa seemed content to safely work their advantage instead of pressing it. A narrow offside kept Villa ahead, but then a perfect delivery from an unnecessary free kick confounded Bizot and Basel were level.

From there, well, if you watched, it looked like a lot of our European nights: harder work than it needed to be. Composure waned, decision-making worsened, and Villa couldn’t seemed to be arsed to up the tempo much. Second-half changes saw us through, though it was nervier than it should have been down the stretch for lack of a third goal (and considering the players introduced). Villa did raise the pressure, but let themselves down elsewhere. Basel seemed for all the world to have given up, then came to life again when they saw they still had time to get something. Tielemans’ halftime introduction proved decisive, in the end.

Now, one obviously understands Villa are playing these matches with one eye on the following weekend. And so are all the other Premier League clubs. As noted, PL teams performed very well across the board this week, which, in broad strokes, illustrates the strength of the league. West Ham may be struggling, but they’re a far harder test than Basel could ever be. But you got the sense the players could’ve shown a bit more urgency. Basel were really just poor, overall, deserving a larger deficit.

Could well be the case that Emery’s usual starting XI would’ve put Basel to the sword more comprehensively, but rotation is necessary for all the reasons.

As far as individual performances go, mixed bag. Lindelöf was good, though a couple times I couldn’t understand why he overlooked Digne streaking ahead in acres of space. Bogarde had a fine game, really seems to have matured. Digne and Cash, what you’d expect. Konsa good, too, but also a bit wobbly and hesitant in places. Malen didn’t figure heavily. Buendia was a bit up and down, but did provide the assist for Youri. Onana did his bit. Guessand got his goal, but seemed to get worse with the ball as the game wore on. He did stick to his defensive duties.

Sancho was pretty much useless throughout, and for the life of me I can’t understand why he doesn’t try a shot when he gets it out of the low overlap and can come back across goal. Anything to get going. Seems absolutely bereft of confidence. Bizot, well…The goal was tricky. Maybe the bigger Martinez snuffs it out, or plays it differently. The delivery was a keeper’s nightmare.

So, job done, but one can’t help feeling Villa squandered an opportunity to get closer to that second-leg advantage. Our next two matches look to be more difficult on paper. But as Canadian Ian has noted to me more than once, Villa do seem to play down to the opponent’s level. And we have to remember they expended a lot of energy and emotion taking down Arsenal just prior.

Three points, useful minutes for everyone, a fair amount of rest for some key figures. It was just lacking the killer instinct.

Over to you.

And I suppose I should add that maybe this is all Emery wants…He is after all an expert when it comes to this competition. But I can’t help thinking he’d like the second legs to be at Villa Park.

Your summary is precisely as I saw the game John. Nothing extra to add. I think Lyon and Midgetland have easier final 2 games than us. I expect us to beat Salzburg but Fenerbahçe will be a tough gig. So it’s quite possible we’ll miss out on the top two places. No need to worry about it until the end of January.

West ‘Aamm on Sunday will be a big step up from Basel. I imagine that training will be down at minimal levels whilst the fixtures are coming at 2 per week. The rotation on Thurs will hopefully pay dividends on Sunday.

Mixture of shambling subdued performance and weaving pretty patterns then getting bored at the last second and giving the ball back to start again. Typical Villa matching their performance to the ability of the opponent.

Quite liked the performance of Lindeloff. Calm quiet measured composed performance.

Reassuring that Villa could make their class tell even though they must be mentally wiped out after the last few months high intensity slog. Rogers head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch in class. Obs POTM.

Big shout out to Lindeloff for doing a composed job on the pitch and that really excellent pass to Rogers for his second goal.

THE VILLA BOYS FROM ASTON……WE TRAVEL NEAR AND FAR…….

Immense win. Just 3 days after rolling over the Swiss. It tested my nerves from first to last minute. I’ll start with a moan. Konsa’s worst game for Villa for some time. Here you go boys, have a goal start after 20 seconds. FFS. Thought we might kick on after the first equalizer, but no.

I was wondering how on earth we were level after our 2nd goal but again we decided play needed to be around our own penalty area. It’s a good job there’s a goal line to stop us going back any further. Kept giving them corners which Bizot was well troubled by. So I was delighted when Rogers smashed in the winner. A goal fit to win any game.

Agree that Lindeloff played well. Maatsen’s pace was needed. Cash seemed to want to play backwards all of the time. He became very predictable. Ollie operated on scraps until SJM swung in the cross that forced the own goal.

It is extremely difficult to turn around deficits in the EPL when playing away. But Spurs, Leeds, Brighton and West ‘Aamm!!

Manure have 3 crucial players away on Afcon duty next week. Here’s a great chance to get this monkey off our backs. And we owe them big time for the last game of last season. Even though Tom Bramall was public enemy number one. Time to call in this debt.

I think for me, it’s that the mentality has changed, coming back against Brighton and West Ham when we’d have had every excuse not to. It’s surreal seeing us pick up wins that would have been certain losses in years past.

And yeah, it would be really satisfying to continue the run with United.

Speaking of surreal, having a full week seems like an international break. With the added bonus that no one’s having to play.

It’s the fastest 30 points we’ve ever collected in the top tier. And it’s pushed us up the table at an unimaginable rate of knots. We even have some breathing space to 5th place. And we’ve faced some difficult fixtures.

Agreed John about the mentality change. When this team moves forward we carry a threat. Mentality must be a large contributing factor. Exciting times ahead.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is very open with its verdicts and punishments handed out to clubs for things like fan disorder, fireworks, throwing objects onto the pitch, player disorder and the like. Their website lists them all. For just this season’s European matches to date, fines totalling 2.45 million Euros have been handed down to various clubs. A nice little earner to quote Arthur Daley. If course, finding out what they do with the money is a different matter.

AEK Athens appear to suffer the most from their fans behaviour as they’ve been hit multiple times. Young Boys got a 50,000 Euro fine for their Villa Park fighting plus 30 days to pay AVFC for the stadium damage and their fans received a 1 match ban for their next away game.

Meanwhile, the silence surrounding Citeh’s 115 alleged charges is deafening. We were supposed to hear the outcome last March according to Pep but another year is closing and still we wait. The stench is awful.

Just one win against Manure since House scored the winner at OT in Sept 21. Abysmal record. It’s as though the players are beaten before they cross the white wash. I’m aware Manure are a useful team but unbeatable they are not. Obviously it’s a mental thing with us. Get our minds straight, focussed and determined and we can remove this monkey from our back. As our mental attitude has improved lately, we’re in with a great chance.

We aren’t in the habit of making lightning starts but that was another undercooked first half. Was happy with 0-0 at HT but am furious with 1-1. You’d hate to be Cash during HT. Still seems like we’ll sneak thru. Unai usually tweaks correctly at HT but Fernandes might force them into a tweak too, so difficult to call it.
This fixture is like Wolves to us so I’ll take any result that means 3 points to the Villa.
I could easily see Malen for McGinn or Tielemans, depending on how confident Unai is.

Villa generally aren’t in the habit of blowing teams away and United are a particular bogey team, but if ever there was a fixture to come out all guns blazing (after 7 days off) batter their confidence and get our foot on their throat, it was this one…whelp…

Youri and Bouba don’t look their most spritely, hopefully they were saving it for the second half.

Wish Villa would have a proper go at them instead of saying come over here if you think you are hard enough. We just haven’t put the slightest pressure on their inexperienced centre halves. Would love to have Malen and Buendia running at them. Ollie still seems to be sleepy and ponderous.

    MANURE ROGERED BY VILLA…..

We spent the first half in awe of them. They had complete control of midfield which they flooded with numbers. We defo looked short in the engine room. Rogers’ missile was against the run of play and gave us an undeserved lead. Gratefully accepted mind. This is after all, Manure.

Then…….not content with last week’s balls up at the back, we repeated the trick FFS. At HT I was rabid. I felt sure Unai would address the midfield imbalance and we’d do more attacking second half. But that never transpired and instead we relied on sporadic raiding. Youri managed to turn his marker and cross, Ollie laid the ball back to Rogers would once again showed Yoro his backside before firing another missile into the onion bag. VP exploded. Scenes. Mayhem. Bedlam. Limbs.

Still we let them dictate and got lucky when Cunha missed a sitter on the 6 yard line. Justice I thought for him baiting the Holte End after his goal.

That’s the complaining out of the way. WE WON. Another 3 points and a gap is opening up to 6th place which will come in handy over the next 2 games. Ten wins on the bounce. Just unimaginable. Wins against this outfit are rare. So I’ll take it. We gave them a gift wrapped goal with silk bow and silver foil on it. But the win was everything.

The morning after and my rocking horse really has done a dump. So many times I’ve been traumatised after playing this lot but today I’m on fire.

Read somewhere that Fernandes has missed 2 games injured and 1 game through illness in all the time he’s been at Manure. Can’t get my head around it, he’s pretty much indestructible. When he departed at HT I thought we were in with a chance.

One item I never mentioned yesterday was the poor performance of both of our FB’s. They just kept playing the ball backwards until they found themselves in a corner and it cost us a goal. They need to realise a long ball down the line at least removes the immediate danger and gives the team time to regather its shape.

I guess with the enforced changes on his end, it made sense packing the midfield and pressing hard, etc., especially against us. I’ve not watched enough of them to know whether they switch into that often or not.

A break in the fixtures and January 1st approaching = transfer clickbait galore…Brennan Johnson being the current ad-revenue bait being dangled in front of Villa fans.

Any predictions have to start off with our finances and, based on the current squad numbers, you have to assume we are pretty close to our ceiling.

A forward is definitely the priority if space can be found (by shifting Elliot or Sancho). My preference would be a Son/Rashford type winger/striker. Johnson definitely fits the mould but I would think his wages would be very high.

I suspect any incomings will be controlled by UEFA’s SCR regs. Believe we comply with all EPL regs but our future is attached to UEFA revenue. I believe we comply with their 2025 regs otherwise last summer’s additions wouldn’t be here. Complying with their 2026 regs may well be more challenging due to reduced revenue from the Europa League. If that’s the case, we won’t be taking on expensive signings and it may be the reason for Elliott’s situation.

Yeah too right. And I’d forgotten that we’ve already signed that 19 y/o Brazilian winger for £10mil. So it really would depend on selling someone or sending a loanee back.

First half has followed our usual MO. Defend and hope to go in level. I could have been Chelsea’s keeper. At the other end the World’s No 1 made a complete mess of a corner dropped on his head and it cost us the goal.

That’s a first half that we’ve seen many times, and it rarely seems to yield a clean sheet.

I’ve often thought that our GK is left with a lot of work to do from corners, especially in this era of set pieces. I know we have the world’s number one but when the delivery is consistently good, it only takes a bobble or the GK being one step short of perfect for a goal to be conceded. Emi had to fight off 2 just to get to his goal line, why don’t we get someone to help him out?

I expect Chelsea to take a step back, and us to progressively take steps forwards, in this second half.

25% possession and no shots is not acceptable.

Our xG has been a nice round 0.00. Malen just can’t get into the game with a lack of service. All balls up to him are head height and gobbled up by his marker.

The away support will float home. Yet another 1-0 deficit overturned away from home. That’s 39 points. Ollie and Maatsen our best guys for me. Onana needed for those troublesome corners.

And we still have that huge gap to P6.

Wow wow and wow. Yet again they’ve turned it up, by EXACTLY the amount needed for 3 points. All the way until about the 85th minute, I was thinking a point would be fine.

Hats off to the lads. They keep pulling out the results. Made to measure.

Whale oil beef forked. I never saw that coming. Thought our run was due to end with the whippersnappers running rings round the tired old gits.

Made me think about one of those nature programs from the African savvanah. Daddy lion is having his big kip and the baby lions are climbing all over him chewing his ears and pulling his tail. He doesn’t care ‘cos kips are important. Then kip time is over, Ollie Ollie across their bonces and respect and order are imposed.

Fabulous mature grown up performance. Ollie POTM – simples.

Just coming down from the clouds. Yet another Laandan outfit binned in their own back yard after giving them a goal start. Champions League again ole ole.

What a weekend. Need a telescope to see the Wai Ayes and Spurs.

Maresca copping pelters for his choice of subs. Their blogs are all saying that Emery has him in his pocket. Well we know only too well that Unai is a master coach and Maresca a student.

I was gratified to hear one of the regular analysts I get (Robbie Mustoe) finally clocking that Villa play more conservatively in the first half, open it up in the second.

Of course, falling behind is definitely not part of the plan, nor is playing poorly or not scoring.

It’s always a great weekend when Villa win but together with the other Dec results, it has been spectacular. The media are now openly discussing our progress under Unai, something Lifers have been aware of for some time. Yesterday’s match was a game of two thirds and one third. For the first two thirds we were awful but in the final third we were lethal. The game changed when Unai brought on Ollie, Sancho and Onana and with them a change of formation.

We of course remain focussed on the next game with an eye on the Champions League. That may change down the road but for now we’ll revel in the moment. It’s the Arse next up and they must be as concerned about us as we are of them. Cash may prove a bigger loss than Kamara. And Ollie just loves playing against them.

Sancho looked useful against Chelsea. He could make a difference down the stretch if Unai is able to wobble his mentality. Watch this space. We knew we had to strap ourselves in for the rollercoaster, we’re on it now.

The title is in our own hands. We only have to beat the arse by 7 goals to go top on goal difference. What could be easier?
