Seems like most everyone who needs something to talk about for a living has decided that Villa are in the race for the Premier League title. A lovely sentiment, but one I’m paying no attention to, just like Emery. Is it possible? Sure. Likely? Hardly.
First off, you look at the upcoming fixtures as others have noted and it’s quite a gantlet ahead of us. Who knows how many points will be taken or dropped. I’ve not done comparisons with the teams around us, but I’m sure someone nipping at our heels is going to have it easier. While it’s nice to have that ‘invincible’ feeling swirling about the club, we know Villa are anything but. Faced with a similar set of fixtures, Arsenal and City are going to take more points. At least that’s what I’d bet on.
What Villa have done is take full advantage of a favorable run to set us up heading into the next stretch. That’s it, and it’s not nothing. Three points from Arsenal was a true bonus. So, too, probably coming away with all three at Brighton. So Villa have done what they could to position or insulate themselves from inevitable reversals and make up for the poor start. We’re where we’d like to be. And honestly, it’s remarkable.
(My view backed up by nothing is that if you split with those around you and get more from the ‘easier’ matches, you come out ahead. It works in my head.)
That’s job one to this point, and they’ve ticked the box. What’s been gratifying is that we’ve been markedly better following our European nights, otherwise we wouldn’t be where we are. So we can see the players have learned and adapted. Some of the performances may not have been works of art, but they’ve been professional. Results have been ground out, the necessary mentality forged.
Would Villa refuse a title? Of course not. But it’s about depth and a different mentality. I could be very wrong, but being in the spotlight and needing to keep pace with deeper, more expensive, and more experienced sides…It’s a lot to ask given the quality of the league. Wolves was a struggle. Leeds and Sunderland have given big clubs fits. Forest are under-performing. Palace have our number. Things we all know.
So, thank you very much everyone who’s saying “You have to say Villa are in the race, yes,” but I’m not having any of it.
It’s much more achievable aiming for that top-four or -five finish. But if pretending you’re playing for the title lands you in the CL places, that’s great. And then, of course, there’s finally winning something.
Ah, Europa
The Europa League has sort of flown under the radar so far, which is fine. I’ve sort of whistled past the graveyard here because I really don’t like being installed as pre-tournament favorites. But obviously given Emery’s previous successes in the competition and the level of competition, it has to be a primary area of focus within the team. Villa really need to win something and winning this solves the league standing pressure.
But you can’t put all your money on winning a given tournament. Spurs got lucky, and Villa really need the extra income and prestige that come from returning to the Champions League. You have to keep playing for it all on two fronts.
Regardless, Thursday and Basel is as big as any match we’ve played so far. Gaining home-leg advantage could be crucial, especially since we’ve managed to turn Villa Park into a fortress. And of course we’ll want to see a couple rivals stumble.
Emery Magic
Our man is once again getting the credit he deserves, which is less than the credit I think he really deserves. When you’re a Villan, you’re not just seeing this string of results in summaries, standings, or highlights. You see all the paper, tape, and glue holding it together. You see what I believe to be deliberately ‘slow’ (or conservative, energy-conserving) starts aiming to shorten games into more like 45 minutes of full effort (which is why I believe Emery was so incensed by the nature of the goals conceded at Brighton). You see the moments of magic overcoming a relative paucity of big chances. You see Ollie struggling in real time, not just in the abstract. You see the injury management, the rotation, the inspired substitutions. You see the tactical tweaks, which are often almost too subtle to suss out.
Keeping all this together is not easy. Villa can’t just go out and run past teams chasing long balls. We can’t out-press. We can’t out-muscle. The devil is in the details and getting players to remain focused on very fine points. It can feel a little painful at times, the seeming lethargy or ponderousness. But it’s a philosophy. It keeps us in games. It provides a mental framework that counters exhaustion and limits danger. It’s very particular and definitely at odds with the “just out-athlete them” approach gaining favor.
The whole thing can a bit chicken-or-egg. Is Emery playing to the strengths of what he’s got, or is Emery taking what he’s got and putting it into his system? I think it’s pretty clear it’s the latter. And that’s why his system is what it is: It’s how you make the best of what you’ve got.
It also makes me look a bit silly for wondering why Cash checks back so often. And credit where it’s due: I’ve long been a ‘critic’ of his, and he’s been outstanding so far this year. (And by critic I mean it’s not that I think he’s a poor player, just that there are better RBs out there.) He’s found his best football. Seems more locked in, more assured. But you can say that about almost anyone in this side.
So. Deep breaths, heads on straight, and let’s hope Villa can go get the points as important as any on offer Thursday.
Over to you.
Basel, Title Race, and Emery Magic

Excellent take on where we currently are John. Third in EPL, third in Europa League. Nobody in my Villa circle is thinking title challenge but they are thinking Champions League status next season because we need the revenue to progress. Can we get there? Well we managed it in 23/24 and missed it by a fart in 24/25. So it’s achievable. All we have to do is stay focused on the next match. And that’s the yodellers on Thurs.
Our confidence is high and in normal circumstances we win. But there will be rotation and that will leave a banana skin or two in our path. We could also fall foul of some bad luck or a crap refereeing decision go against us. One thing is certain though. I’m fully focused on Thurs and I’m sure the players and coaching staff will be too.
I’m going to assume the focus is strong, and you’d hope the run of form has them feeling good. But like you say, no legislating for all sorts of things, like Ty not understanding how goal kicks work.
Speaking of decisions, I rarely watch CL games, but did see the ‘penalty’ Liverpool were awarded. Soft as you’ll ever see.
Here I go playing the old soldier – more like KOS!
I agree totally with what you say about the league. No interest in Europe or any of the cups.
Pointers from my past. I remember John Gregory’s all English side of the late 90’s when we were top or thereabouts at Xmas, just like we are right now. Then it all fell apart – don’t really know why ‘cos other bits of life were going on then. That’s the gist of part of what you are writing. Now my biggy harking back to Ron Saunders. We had bubbled under w/o threatening for a few years but nothing like Emery’s last few years. We had a very indifferent start in 1980, much like this season. Then we slowly took off and became unobtrusively relentless after a few months. It wasn’t really noticed then unlike now. No one including me thought it would go anywhere. We sort of hung on not really believing. Then Ipswich came to VP at Easter’81 and won 1-2. We all thought that’s it, the bubble has burst, it’s all over. Then RS came out with the most famous line in Villa folklore. We just got on with business just a little bit better than Ipswich. Middlesborough did us a huge favour whilst we bottled it at Arsenal on the last day of the season.
There are omens there for me that say o ye of little faith but just to be safe, I will say we have got no chance of winning the league.
Yeah, funny how it works…I always worry about the run-in, being gassed.
Unai has given a bleak comment concerning Harvey Elliott. Reading between the lines, we are cash strapped due to UEFA’s SCR’s and Unai thinks £35 million is better spent elsewhere for the needs of the team. Hence reports of our interest in Alysson from Gremio who is a much needed winger. All parties are trying to find a solution which can be taken as meaning either Elliott stays at VP and trains with us whilst we pick up his salary or Liverpool agree to change the agreement that demands £35 million after 10 games so he can get some game time, or Liverpool take him back in January.
Asking why we took him in the first place seems a reasonable question. Maybe the form of Buendia has changed the dynamics. Unai confirmed that Elliott has not travelled to Basel with the squad.
All makes sense, Plug. I’ve nothing against Elliott, never met him. But I think, yeah, Buendia changed the math, and we’d rather spend the money elsewhere. Dunno what Emery really wants, but changing it to a straight loan with no obligation would surely be best for Harvey if pool aren’t going to use him. Course, doesn’t guarantee Elliott time with Villa.
Me, I’m guessing it was deadline day madness and trying to get bodies in the door, and maybe Emery wasn’t ever pleased with the terms. But Buendia was a big unknown right up to the end and managed to play his way into the frame. I’d have thought ‘option’ rather than ‘obligation’ would’ve been far preferable.
Just had a thought…maybe we give them Elliott back in exchange for Salah. You know how Emery likes to rehabilitate players.
How long can you keep your tongue in your cheek before it hurts too much or before you bite it off?
At least through January.
OK, team news for Basel:
Aston Villa XI: Bizot, Digne, Lindelof, Konsa, Cash, Sancho, Onana, Bogarde, Guessand, Buendia, Malen.
Substitutes: Wright, Oakley, McGinn, Tielemans, Watkins, Garcia, Maatsen, Rogers, Kamara, Hemmings.
Well taken, Evann.
Guessand has pissed off Federer!!
Sharp stuff from Guessand to send a crawler inside the post.
That was poor
Bollocks. How is this game level.
Guess and was teed-up for a second just before that, but let it run for some reason.
Huh…well, I’ll take it.
Wow, VAR let off.
VAR is better than sliced toasted bread. Wakey wakey Villa.
Malen is not getting any service.
FFS
The reprieve never lasted 5 minutes. Crap defence.
That’s why Bizot is only the world’s number 2!
Well, that all got very ragged. Can see some changes coming.
The game feels like one we will lose. Fortunate to be level at HT. We look vulnerable at the back and not creating much offensively. Get the feeling we’ll need 2 more goals to win it.
Service momentarily restored
Youri you beauty.
T’man’s with another unworthy goal from outside the box.
BAH! Too easy!
Sancho is doing my head in.
Sancho making no case for himself tonight.
Has Sancho done anything all season for us that has been even good? In October the argument was that he wasn’t up to speed yet. Well, he hasn’t improved. Can we unload his salary in January?
Dunno…he just seems completely lost. I’d be happy to see him go back.
That was the ugliest win I’ve seen in some time.
Worthy win w/o getting out of 3rd gear. Nothing else to say.
Why do we turn a simple game that we controlled into a fucking dog fight? The last 10 minutes, we couldn’t put a foot on the ball. Think I’ve aged a couple of years. BUT….we won. Another 3 points. COYVB.
Far harder than it needed to be…Put a new page up, but it looks for all the world like the players see these as training games then get a bit surprised when they have to play 90 minutes. All sorts of silly balls and decisions even from the vets.
An excellent week for the coefficient. Nine English teams in action, eight of those were away. But they returned 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.
Anyone see Bailey’s goal against Celtic last night? Excellent effort, looked way better than anything I’ve seen from Sancho or Guessand. Shame he was just offside in the build up.
No, guess I missed it in the highlights wrap-up. He always had his moments. You wonder what might’ve been had he not injured himself scoring that cracker.
