Villa Preseason: 2-2 Nashville

Villa Preseason: 2-2 Nashville

Not a bad place, Nashville, and hope everyone’s getting used to the new look. Some things I’ll probably change as time goes on, but overall, not too bad.

Likewise the performance yesterday. Shame we keep giving it away at the back, but really, it was a solid 70 minutes, and a particularly decent first half. A little more luck and we could’ve notched up quite a few goals. But, the movement was good, the side looked a bit sharper, and we were seeing some new wrinkles in our patterns. Good to see Malen score and another fine header from Ollie, who’s looking fairly dialed in.

The problems playing it out persist, but I’m hoping they’re coaching moments and that we’re getting them out of our system. That might be a bit optimistic. But I thought Bogarde and Torres looked good together and Lamare’s willingness to carry it out was a big plus. Stopped us overplaying, spread the distribution. Not sure what’s up with Konsa, but he’s taken to going to ground rather easily and has been playing himself into trouble. He’s still doing the other things, but he’s the weak link so far in playing out.

We know he doesn’t carry often, and he rarely does much of anything to push it forward. Could be by design, but Bogarde’s initiative stood in stark contrast, and seemed to belie the idea that it has to go to the left CB for us to move out.

Kamara had another good outing up and down the pitch, and Onana seemed quietly comfortable. If we could just get a couple more of those long balls over the last man it would open up a lot.

Elsewhere, still not much news on the transfer front, which probably isn’t the worst thing. We could use that bit of attacking depth that Rashford and Asensio provided, but really that’s about all we’re missing as far as the numbers go. I like Villa’s stance on Watkins and Martinez, but the rumors persist around Ollie.

I’ve yet to see much from Jacob that would make me miss him. There’s a player there, but he just isn’t impacting games and it often feels like he’s just making up the numbers. Don’t think it’s for lack of trying, just sort of seems to have plateaued. For us, anyway. Bailey, I really hope someone comes in for him. We need someone out there who can consistently beat a man and it just isn’t working enough. But who knows, maybe he’ll start popping up with goals again.

And while I don’t think Buendia fits into Emery’s plan, he is sort of a cut-price Asensio type. Can completely understand selling him, but there don’t seem to be many takers. I imagine another loan deal will be his fate.

I suppose the Watkins saga will continue, but I really doubt Villa will be convinced to let him go this far into the summer with big-name strikers commanding such big sums. At 29, you think maybe it could be time to cash in, and I suppose the barcodes could meet Villa’s valuation if Isak does go for anywhere near what’s being asked. Malen might be seen as a replacement the way Emery’s been lining him up, but it could just as easily be about keeping the same structure.

Over to you.

On the transfer front, who we might buy and sell will be controlled by Unai. Monchi has said selling is more difficult because of the need to find a buyer. No doubt Unai has his list of those he wishes to keep and those he’d be happy to ship with the caveat that every player has a value from either list that the club would be prepared to accept. We’ve had Emi and Ollie as subjects for every BS click bait site going but they are still with us and if time shortens to find replacements, they will be kept. Guess we’ve just got to keep watching this space until the window closes.

Anybody want to guess where we might finish in the coming season? With 6 teams in the UCL, the England coefficient is likely to be compromised unless they all do as well as Villa did in the season just completed. How Spurs and the Wai Ayes fare will be critical. Maybe only 4 places up for grabs next time around. Winning the Europa League can’t be relied on. I’ll stick my neck out and run with 5th place.

So hard to say, Plug, and I’m terrible at sporting predictions. I’d take anything 7th or higher, tbh. Long season, will need luck with injuries as the squad stands now.

But. If we can work out the games following European nights, you never know.

Greetings! I love the blog and have enjoyed all of your comments for several years. I tried to register on the old site, but ended up getting an error screen every time, so I gave up and just lurked. I welcomed the new site for another opportunity to register, and, voila! I hope to be a regular poster now that I’m on board! UTV.

Welcome, PDX! Glad to have you. Sorry about the difficulties…the site had gotten very wobbly.

I know more now since I actually put this one together (for better or worse), so I hope it continues to work.

I’m glad for the change of host, because I too had tried and failed to signup over the past few years, so maintained a watching (and enjoying!) role.

On preseason I think, like last year, we look well short of sharpness, but will turn up ready to rock against Newcastle. West Ham and Arsenal last season were arguably 2 of the better performances.

On transfers, we have to stay within the rules and our income. Given our income sees us competing with West Ham, not Sours, we have to cut our cloth accordingly, so we can’t have 20+ players on first 11 wages (Ike we probably already do). I see lots of talent, so I’ll be happy with whatever Unai is happy with.

My main wish is a reduction in those damn niggly injuries that stay quiet for a month, then plague players for an indefinite period, see JJ’s last 2 years. They’re more disruptive than the ACL’s where at least you know to count out a player and plan how to replace them

If we see that (plus I’d love to see Emi stay and Ollie fully fit) I think we’ll handle the Thursday-Sunday no problem like before, and we’ll be pushing for top 4 again. We have a much better squad than 2 seasons ago.

I think we are much better placed this August than last Henry. Ollie was on England duty and knackered, Tyro and Kamara were still invalids so although we had Big Jhon available, we also had the toughest games at UCL. Hopefully this season the Europa League will be a bit less demanding. Also hope we avoid lengthy injury spells like those suffered by Ramsey and Onana.

I agree. I have very little criticism for Emery but squad utilization is one. Until the knockouts in March, I think we have the opportunity to have essentially a PL-Sunday team and a Europa-Thursday team. Barring another injury crisis, there’s no excuse for having shattered players, like Rogers was in the back end last season. If they’re in the squad and being paid, they have to have an opportunity to contribute.

And one final comment on transfers…we may well end up not making a marquee signing, and I see that as a consequence of the Gerrard era. We paid up Coutinho and gave him away, we are paying Dendonker (with help from Anderlecht) then we’ll give him away, we took a loss on Carlos, we couldn’t shift Digne (you could argue we benefited from that), we gave up Traore for free since his value had been run down… At some point you have to pay the consequences.

It’s happened to Wolves, Everton and even Newcastle, that they’ve had to sell players or sit out transfer windows because the maths doesn’t add up. With all the Deano signings (Emi, Ezri, Ty, Emi B, Ollie) now approaching their late 20s and early 30s, we needed to address the transfer strategy re squad age anyway, but it seems that PSR will force a change on us.

Henry…think I may have deleted you by mistake. It’s not quite irony, but close to. An avalanche of bots signing up.

Anyway, if you try to login and it doesn’t work. Just repeat the process and I’ll be on the lookout.

    Good to have you.

And yes…we are carrying a lot of dead weight. It’s a shame how it works, but we’ve had more than our fair share of buys that have held us back.

Which is why, when looking at the squad, I have a greater love for Deano than even back in the day. He put down really solid foundations under extraordinary pressure and did us right.

Every club has it’s bomb squad. Change managers and get one instantly. Top of the league in this respect is Chelsea. Manure not far behind. Guess we are mid table.

    JC, Plug

Following on from you both, they are the big reasons that I wanted Deano to at least see out the season. 3 summers of transfer windows had been done for him, nearly all players from 21-24 years. We weren’t going to get relegated, the players were still running hard for him. The squad would hopefully have gelled and the board would have been able to make a choice about direction at the end of the season, from a place of strength.

Instead, as plug said, we got an instant bomb squad and signed future bomb squad members.

It turned out well as it led to Emery, but it’s cost us financially and affects us until all of the duds are off the books and out of the 3 year PSR accounting cycle.

Well, despite what we’re hearing, seems we are trying to spend. Ferran Torres apparently the subject of an improved bid.

Either players are leaving or Emery really wants more options and goals in the side.

Well, only saw the first half, but it was good. Better at the back and a lot more efforts to bypass the press, starting with Martinez. Thought Buendia was a big part of the speed of play, tidy and tenacious.

No complaints. They look like they’re thinking like Emery now.

The team played a lot better than VillaTV managed. When you charge people for a service, it needs to work. Fortunately the football on display was excellent. Some wonderful goals. I know we are a week further forward than Roma’s season but putting them to the sword 4-0…..momma mia.

Great free kick from Buendia who also had a good game. T’mans pass that put in Ramsey…..sublime. Ollie’s header perfect. But we did miss him second half as Malen’s game is not as a striker who holds the ball up. He was easily pushed off the ball. His game is running onto passes into the area where he is lethal as the fourth goal demonstrated.

SJM in demand with Everton and the Wai Ayes. £18 million reported. Rejected by Unai. Watch this space. Digne’s new contract is a 2 year extension to 2028. Guessing lower wages are involved thus helping the SCR rules from UEFA.
