Villa Preseason: 4-0 Roma

Posted by John Clark | Aug 8, 2025 | AVL Blog, Match Reviews | 33

Villa Preseason: 4-0 Roma

So, not a bad night for preseason. Comparable level of team (Europa League), ‘home’ game, and a fairly decisive scoreline.

But what I think was interesting was that it perhaps put a couple of creeping fears to bed. Which, being Villans, creeping fears are akin to the sun rising.

Being specific, what I saw were some rather obvious tweaks, like going long more often, some different patterns, and some wrinkles in the press. The reason I care is that they indicate Emery isn’t a one-trick pony. He’s adapting.

As I mentioned last time, aggressive high pressing is becoming much more common. The reasons are obvious, as are the risks. But if you can’t punish teams for doing it, then there’s no incentive not to roll the dice.

And it’s seemed for a while that this is where Villa struggle most: playing fast, athletic, high-pressing sides.

Why? Quality and decision-making. You need one-touch players who take and give effortlessly. You need patterns that facilitate players being in position for quick, one-touch passes. You need players who understand the permutations on the fly and are confident in executing. Which really goes back to quality, but it’s also a bit different.

And that’s schoolboy stuff: The ball is faster; let it do the running.

Decision-making is the thing, though. It means thinking like the manager…Which is to say, executing correctly without thinking, without slowing things down.

You never know what’s instruction or not, really, unless it’s made hugely obvious. We’re often left to wonder if Emery would’ve wanted the ball played forward there a step or two earlier, or are the players having caution drilled into them and looking at certain situations and thinking, “the gaffer wants me to just play it back here and have us reset”.

When Villa flow, it seems to be the former.

And I thought Emi Buendia had a lot to do with that working so smoothly. As I’d also said, he’s basically an Asensio-type player. He’s small, but strong on the ball. He has exceptional awareness. He’s a one-touch player. He’s always looking to put the knife in. He’s also relentless, a bit rash, and plays with a lot of emotion. He cares. He’s completely in the moment. And I like that.

What this means is that I understand why we’re still maybe trying to sign Asensio, apparently. But I also wonder if we don’t have a lot of the same thing already on the books. Is Marco a bit more ‘cultured’? Maybe yes. Otherwise, I’m not sure he’s a huge upgrade. For a player on the fringe who in all likelihood came into the summer expecting/hoping to be sold, and probably resigned to being loaned out, I thought Buendia made a strong personal statement. A goal, an assist, and countless lovely touches, retentions, and harrying actions. He’s committed to giving his all.

I didn’t really mean this to be about him. Regulars will know I’ve always been a fan. The injury and Phil put him out of the frame, largely, and maybe we did overpay back in the day. But the way he took that central role was excellent. He shaded right and came high when pressing, but with he ball it, seemed he was expected to be a 10. And he did it well.

Why do I care? He’s already on the books, he’s good enough, and if he can convince Unai, whatever money there is left can be allocated elsewhere. With Youri deep, Buendia playing a 10-role…I think it’s better than McGinn there. And you’ve got Rogers to change it up or vice versa. They do different things, but you know what I mean about where players slot in and what they do differently. Buendia makes the pass. Rogers carries it. Oversimplified, but that’s basically the difference.

The rhythm to preseason has also been interesting. Emery clearly gave the main group of midfielders and attackers extra time off. A week or two in this age is a lot of extra time, crazy as it sounds. Based on the first half, looks to me like it’s working. The players seemed sharp and had plenty of running in them. We’ve now got Marseille and Villareal in a nutty back-to-back and then it kicks off with the toon.

It could all change in an instant, but I’m feeling better about our ‘stagnant’ summer and the side’s footballing evolution. The methods seem to be sinking in. Emery is adapting. The players seem to be answering. The culture actually seems to be taking shape. Who knows how it looks when the rubber hits the road, but I liked what I saw, and I hope the final two runouts reinforce the perception of a fit and rested side who’ve reached a new tactical maturity.

Over to you.

Also, I am just playing with the images. Not that anyone cares, but now the library isn’t broken I hope to get some more variation back like in the old days. Helps my eyes, anyway.

John, Buendia did have an excellent game against Roma. When he’s on form he’s top drawer. If we got that level of performance out of him each game, Unai would have a superb squad member. The new lad can also play midfield or in the hole behind Watkins or on the wing. Versatile. We’ll have to wait and see how this affects Unai’s thinking.

I too thought we handled Roma’s aggressive press very well in the first half, going long sometimes, going short sometimes. Less so second half where I thought Konsa was fortunate to get away with fouls given against his presser when losing the ball and falling over more than once. He won’t get away with that in the EPL.

I always rated the pre injury Buendia of 2 seasons ago. Why the scouse knobhead couldn’t see that and lumbered us with a broken down Coutinho still bugs me now.

Rant over, I’m hoping Buendia may be over the injury and might have his mojo back. A good squad player and replacement for Asencio who I believe is starting a Coutinho style downward slope.

Yes, I think Konsa has been going wrong for a long time now. He has been caught on the ball a lot, done a Youngy type dive and conned the ref into a free kick every single time. I don’t like it and suspect the refs might start getting wise to it.

Haven’t seen much of the pre season games but get the impression that Bogarde is being seriously tried out at RCB. I rather liked Disasi. Think he would be more scary to a forward than Konsa and probably more confident and natural on the ball.

Yeah, I’m a bit worried about Konsa, too. Seems very hesitant (apart from his one rush forward) and indeed, he keeps getting caught dawdling on the ball.

Interesting half. Marseilles frustrated, and a bit cheap, really. But Villa holding their shape well, some nice attacking play.

Young Hemmings doesn’t look at all out of place. Reading things well, tracking and running hard. Good pace.

Not sure what Marseilles were playing at, but that was a poor look. Moan and whinge, then mount up the cheap fouls. Top twats: Medina and Greenwood.

I liked Tyro’s reaction to Greenwood’s cheap shot, but I wish he’d gone ahead and thrown him to the floor. And obviously Emery was less than pleased with the tactics. de Zerbi should be embarrassed.

Couldn’t agree more John. Medina is a real shit. Done by 2 Aubameyang goals in 3 minutes. Defence caught ball watching.

Never seen an image of Unai in the face of the opposition manager like that before. Thought he was going to deck De Zerbi. Lost count of the number of cards the ref dealt out. More than a full deck I think.

Yep and Tyro really did need to drop Greenwood who always seems to score against us. Hope we don’t have too many walking wounded in the morning.

Both first half goals resulted from mistakes. One from Tyro, one from the lino. SJM was well offside when he scored.

Bottom line….we competed well against a UCL team in a hostile atmosphere. Malen didn’t impress me. Hemmings did. Bogey looked comfortable until the defence got ripped apart in 3 second half minutes. New boy Guessand….never got to see what he can do with all the fouling going on. Oh, and Maupay is another tow rag.

I think the game hinged on the subs, Plug. They brought on fresh legs before we did and it told in that spell.

Obvs Emery had a different plan due to playing again tomorrow. And yeah, we competed well especially when considering the lineup(s). I think if that second set had come on at halftime or 60 mins we wouldn’t have shipped the two goals like that.

    Agree that Malen isn’t really a center-forward.

That was an interesting game. We were the better team in the first half, then gradually got worn down in the 2nd – mostly by constant cheap shots by Marseilles. After getting collared by Mings, Greenwood wasn’t quite so chirpy. Roll on Villarreal, then Newcastle. I think we look pretty good with one week to go.

I can’t be too disappointed with the performance. This was mostly our backups playing away against a UCL side and they were very competitive. But Mings! Surely at fault for their first and arguably for their second as well, failing to pick up the far-post runner. I used to be confident that we’d get solid defending from him, but now I’m not so sure.

Tomorrow, the first team will start, though RB is an open question given that both Cash and Bogarde played big minutes today. Perhaps Garcia? But I’d expect Emi, Pau, Konsa, and Maatsen, with Kamara and Tielemans in the middle and Bailey, Buendia, and maybe Guessand behind Ollie.

    Looking forward to it!

Yeah, think we do look reasonable, henryd, PDX. There’s definitely a sense of shaping the summer not only to do the requisite minutes but also to avoid overdoing it. Some of the kids have gotten longer looks than I might’ve expected, and we could very well have seen a kind of B-team lineup starting yesterday.

Mings defo cocked up the first one, thought maybe it was Bogarde who should’ve been paying more attention at the far post.

And De Zerbi with his post-match comments, “not for Emery to criticize his players,” “there’s no such thing as a friendly.” So he’s clearly encouraging that side of their play and apparently thinks they should be immune from criticism.

Hate to be petty, but leaves me half-wishing one of their stars would’ve been lost for a while following a cheap late tackle. I’m sure he’d be singing a different tune.

I don’t know how we are winning this game. Villareal have had some great chances in the first half and Emi in goal has been brilliant. Konsa seems a bit of a liability at the back, his run forward was straightforward enough but he managed to screw it up and somehow the world’s no 1 baled him out.

Ollie’s goal, against the run of play was tremendous. The man is on fire.

Yeah, Konsa there, Baily passing to no one in the middle setting them off, dribbling into half the Villareal side, setting them off.

Defo in this only because of Martinez and a couple terrible misses.

Villareal look sharp. Nice one-touch football.

Much better 2nd half John. Maybe the changes affected Villareal. Think 0-2 win flattered us overall. Cracking goal from Buendia, he has an assist and goal this evening. Liked Maatsen too. Jimoh looks very tricky, might save us a few quid. Ollie makes us fluid up front.

Considering it was around 29 degrees, the slower pace suited us. That’s another UCL opponent faced. The 3rd one on the trot is the Wai Ayes next week.

I think it’s only a one-match ban. Three for violent conduct, but less for denying obvious goal-scoring opportunity or second caution.

Ah, I think you may be correct PDX. It’s a 3 game ban for violent conduct or for serious foul play. It’s a 1 game ban for denying a goal scoring opportunity. So it depends what was in the ref’s report. He wiped his man out. What did Bramall put in his report? Seeing as he knew immediately after the game he’d screwed up over Roger’s goal, hopefully he chose the lesser offence. Can anyone confirm what the ref reported?
