Villa vs. Brighton

Villa vs. Brighton

While Villa haven’t quite gotten to the ‘must-win’ stage of the season, recent setbacks are starting to push us there. Time to panic? No. But the race for the Champions League places has gotten a bit tense.

Now, this was probably always going to be the case. The poor start left points hanging, and while Villa’s remarkable form since has put the side in third, downturns are virtually inevitable for a variety of reasons. And it doesn’t help that Villa continue to be financially hamstrung while the likes of United and Chelsea aren’t. Also doesn’t help that those two contrived to put more competent people in charge of their deeper and more expensively assembled squads.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the current downturn follows another ‘disappointing’ window along with rumors linking Emery to Real Madrid. And to be honest it’s put me in a funk, because the two could well be intertwined. As we’ve feared and wondered, will the financial restraints ultimately prove too frustrating for Emery? Are the players once again feeling let down?

Obviously I’ve got no firm answers, but one doesn’t have to try very hard to imagine gathering clouds on the horizon. And one doesn’t have to stretch very far to worry about the mentality of the team should they drop more points and get reeled in further by the chasing pack.

So, yeah, I’ve tried to largely ignore what’s going on as Villa have finally been found mortal at home. Tonight, though, is a chance to turn the narrative back to the positive.

In terms of what’s happening on the pitch, it’s obviously hurt to have Youri, Bouba, and SJM unavailable. Villa managed to cope pretty well without Youri earlier in the season, but this time it’s seeming to hurt more, and it’s only compounded by losing your two most dogged midfielders. That’s bite and creativity gone, and it has to be weighing on the players as much as Emery.

It just feels like Villa can’t really catch a break in a competition that’s already rigged against them. Injuries, officials, restrictions and cock-ups…Quite a stew.

But. You have to carry on and the biggest trap is for anyone concerned to start feeling sorry for themselves. Grind it out, find ways to win, and hope that other results and luck break your way just enough.

So, not the most cheerful write-up from me, but a win tonight would go some way to restoring a little optimism. I’d like to think we’re due and that Madrid will land their man in Klopp.

Over to you.

I have to admit to being thoroughly disenchanted with football since sky invented it in 1992. It’s becoming less of a live sport and more of a TV soap opera designed to sell adverts. TV wants it’s designated heros who serially vanquish the unworthy and we certainly aren’t a designated hero. It just isn’t convenient for their narrative that Villa were instrumental in creating the league.

I’ve always had the theory that every aspect of the country have a weird blank spot about Birmingham because it isn’t a romantic port like london, liverpool, manchester or newcastle and they don’t really “see” the place. That includes the West Midlands “big 6).

For a long time, I’ve been a Villa (addict) fan not a football fan. Got to say that if Emery gets fed up with the plastic restrictions and leaves, I will be finally done with football.

Horrible niggly narky game. Maatsen occassionally looking sharp and punchy. Dougie playing several sharp penetrating through balls but sometimes he is a bit too quick thinking for the others. Ollie working hard as usual but nothing sticking. Think it’s a race between Martinez and their number 6 to see who gets a 2nd yellow.

Probably the most interesting part of this game, his debut. Not exactly a stage on which anyone would shine, but glad to see he may not just be a speculative signing for future sell-on. We could use a new contributor now.

Purgatory. Torture. Inertia. These were my thoughts at HT. Having witnessed so many of these first half performances, I was happily expecting a large improvement in the second. Wrong. We were worse. It would be unfair to start naming names, they were all well below par and for me only the world’s No 1 was himself.

Buendia was anonymous, Ollie struggled, Bogey’s worst position is RB and so on. Even the subs looked poor with the exception perhaps of Tammy who attempted to inject some energy into proceedings.

Hurzeler will be gutted. His HT talk probably centred around us being there for the taking because we were. It’s the only time this season I feel like we stole the points. Felt only elation when Buendia’s last kick of the game floored the Arse. Then, we were going for it, fortune favours the brave. This time ……….. 3 points from such a laboured performance.

Dougie taking out swinging corners from the right got nowhere. Bailey finally managed to swing one in and he gets an assist for it. Tyro completed the mugging. But hey, how does the saying go? Win when you’re playing poorly and things must be good. I’ll take it every day of the week.

In the bigger Champions League picture, I think we now need 6 more wins from 12 games. It will help if we don’t lose against red scouse, Chelsea and Manure. All to play for.

John, I’m less concerned about Real Madrid. If Unai goes there, he won’t last long because none of their managers ever do. He knows that. And the Villa Park project is not yet completed. I believe the drop in performance levels is down to our midfield being decimated with injuries. That bastard Palhinha didn’t even get booked for his season ending hatchet job on Kamara.

I never know what to make of certain kinds of gossip, Plug. The Real stuff seemed oddly specific, but then it was basically the same thing they’d reported Klopp saying. I’d be less ‘concerned’ if we weren’t being strangled. Do agree it seems a poisoned chalice and Emery may well have had his fill of that kind of job with Arsenal and PSG. A CL finish would go a long way to putting anything to bed, you’d think.

No sign again of Elliott. Poor lad has been a victim of these anti competitive SCR regs imposed by Uefa and EPL. I read reports yesterday that Real Madrid had come to some agreement with Uefa to drop their action against them for opposing their “super league” status and thereby exposing them to anti competitive regs. Seems they’re happy to put up with anti competitive regs when it suits them (SCR) and not when it doesn’t (“super league”). Cake and eat come to mind.

656, whether Sky like it or not, the “big 6” is gradually being broken up. Villa and the Wai Ayes are new kids on the block. There will be others as the money attracts the world’s best coaches. Debt is a huge millstone around the necks of the “big 6”. Servicing it is costing them big time. Their revenue streams are currently taking care of it but each time Villa or the Wai Ayes get into UCL it eats away at their exposure to the revenue and debt will become a real issue which it currently is not. The time bomb is ticking.

The most important thing for Villa remains Messrs Sawiris and Edens. I mean, we could have the Glazers or Boehley….

The debt issue, absolutely, and I fail to see how it isn’t factored in that Villa are a debt-free club. One of the reasons I hate seeing Utd and Chelsea making managerial moves that worked and getting back into contention.

I was waking up, running through the table in my mind (as one does) and decided we’re the new Spurs in the old Big Six.

That was a wacky game. Glad Tammy got a goal. Shocking refereeing, even more shocking performance from our Captain on the day. I don’t really understand why Onana played – he needs to be wrapped in cotton wool. Dougie was good, Bailey tried plenty but only got Bizot sent off. I’m not too bothered with being knocked out, but we looked quite disheveled by the end

The Wai Ayes do like playing against Villa who have a man down. They berate the referee incessantly into taking action. And he obliged. But they do show how you deal with a 10 man team, unlike our performances in similar situations. For what it’s worth, thought the ref was awful.

The officiating left everything to be desired…Not sure I’ve seen so many truly odd/bad calls. Take Digne…I’m not sure it’s a handball: yes, arms are up, next to body, twisting, protecting his face/head. Seen it given, not given. But it’s clearly in the area, foul or not. So he gives the handball, and puts it outside the area. Not complaining, but you just have no credibility with calls like that. Never mind the rest.

It really ruined the game, obviously. Once toon felt aggrieved about Tammy’s goal, the whole thing descended into farce, really. And they’re so unlikeable.

Canadian Pete telling it like it is. Having a big moan about the rumour that we’re about to be fined again by UEFA over our SCR figures. Whilst Citeh and their 115 charges attract silence and no action. Just a massive credibility issue.

I’d add that Real Madrid have come to an agreement with UEFA to drop their pending action against them. Real threatened the action on grounds of EU law stating that UEFA opposition to the “super league” is anti competitive and therefore unlawful. However, Real are happy to accept the SCR rules invoked by UEFA which are also anti competitive but helps them buy all and sundry despite debts of Euros 1.1m.

Perhaps Nassef should threaten legal action during his negotiations with UEFA over the matter.

JC on 17.02.2026 at 6:13 pm

Obviously the whole thing is absurd…Nassef and toon are in the funny spot (them more than us) of having money, trying to thread a certain needle. I don’t mind the fines (rather than points), assuming Nassef is just baking that in as a cost and it’s not my money. Haven’t looked at how wealthy some of the new owners are in the Other 14.

What I do mind are the limits, which are nigh on impossible to comply with and be competitive on more than one front. Which is clearly the point. If these clubs can’t have their super league, they want closed shops at the top of their domestic leagues to guarantee their CL spots and money.

So yeah, does seem to meet an ‘anti-competitive’ threshold. True competition, like any business, would mean clubs can go bust. You’d think Nassef and others would have a case…I’d very much like to know what the situation looks like from the inside.

Everything that I have read says the agreement always was for ten PREMIER league games to trigger the sale. Cup and Europe completely separate.

Don’t know anything about sports science medicine but I had to keep my bandage on for ten days when I had my hernia operation decades ago. I could walk my dogs as far as I wanted from day one w/o any problems. That’s obviously completely different from continually twisting and turning at high speed on a football pitch.

Bailey was a total waste as a starter today. Villa just looked totally jaded and brain dead (again) today. Emery just keeps on insisting on his tippy tappy possession “method acting” school of football. Please can we mix it up now and again with a surprise bit of old school direct up and at them. It would be so good to see an old school twin striker pairing now and again.

A worthy never say die scratching out of an equaliser but I think Emery stubbornly got it wrong today. His message seems to be getting tired.

Must admit to some reservations about today’s game when I set off for VP. So it proved. I saw the World’s No 1 put up a one man wall and then positioned himself over by his LH post and wondered why he did that. Guess the Leeds free kick taker thought the same and I wasn’t surprised by the outcome. He did make some crucial saves but our defence looks suspect without Kamara covering it.

If I am going to be critical, Unai probably left it too late with the subs of Tammy and Sancho. They injected some life into proceedings and Barks perked up the midfield. Like many teams in the EPL this season, tight man for man marking is the order of the day which leads to many fouls and negates a slow Villa type build up. But visiting teams have found it very productive at VP.

We definitely need to speed up our play with first time passes before the contact arrives. Our guys at the back are quite guilty of not doing this. I’d also give Tammy a start and give Ollie a break. Sadly Bailey dropped back into his old habits of running into cul-de-sacs. I’d have hooked him sooner.

Felt a little down with our performance but both sides did have chances to win it. Kev’s knee got us out of jail this time. Perked up a little afterwards when I discovered Burnley levelled at Chelsea in overtime.

I see a bit of the big picture now I’ve got the niggles out of my head (good dose of bacardi and coke). We have won and drawn against a fellow competitor – that on its own is league winning form. Top marks to Tammy Kev for instinctively poaching a goal. Ollie needs to realise that is the gold standard for a centre forward.

Another shocking var decision in Liverpool favour, etikee miles offside but judged not to be interfering with play, shambles
On to us emery has to take the blame for yesterday and last few matches, his team selections and subs have been wrong, how is ollie continuing to start ,he ain’t going to world cup with his season form apart from a decent December it’s been horrible, our 2 man midfield with beundi doesn’t work when kamara tielmens not there,Bailey is still last season version which wasn’t any good

I saw a refereeing shocker in the Spurs v the Arse game. Ref wiped off a Spurs goal for a “push” on Gabriel who screamed and threw himself to the ground when he felt a touch on his back. Meanwhile, all manner of grappling, wrestling, obstructing goes on at each corner set piece without any intervention. And they wonder why people believe it’s bent,

For me 2 different types of loans, agree it’s wrong what’s happening to elliot but for me if we are loaning young players they need to be guaranteed minutes, they would learn more from training at bodymoor
Remember when certain clubs loaned players to championship side they had to play,Bruce signed a few

Well done Bodo/Glimpt in the UCL. To beat Citeh, Atletico Madrid and Inter (twice) in their last 4 games is exceptional and just what the competition needed. This kind of result gives great interest to the competition and we really do need more of these types of results.

But everybody knows the playing field ain’t level and except for the very rare times like this one, the same established few will continue to hoover up all the silverware, money and publicity going to the detriment of interest in the “competitions”. The EPL and indeed all other leagues, UEFA and the other federations either face up to the lack of competitive fixtures with e.g. a salary cap or continue to oversee the inevitable decline of its “competitions”.

And while I’m banging this drum, WTF are we going to hear about Citeh’s fiasco?

Some light reading guys. This is UEFA’s “financial state of the clubs”. Apparently excludes one off sales whatever that comprises.

    https://ecfil.uefa.com/2025

For the calendar year 2025 (1st Jan – 31st Dec) they say Villa made 441m euros (approx £378m) in revenue but also made losses of 97m euros (approx £82m). Money men are saying we’ll pass the EPL PSR rules but not UEFA’s so can expect another big fine from them. FFS we need more commercial revenue otherwise we’ll lose Rogers.

Our financial reading is absolutely crazy, nett spend of 40m under emery yet almost 300m in losses, how
Our players amortisation must be low down
      2026 Abrahams alysson*
      2025 garcia,ozcan *bizot guessand malen*
2024rogers ned *barclay matasen onana dobbins tiling junior bacchera*
      2023torres
      2022 digne
Some qualify for youth program, some loan to buy,a few around 10m so only 2m a year

Been traveling for work, so there’s the uncharacteristic silence from me.

Have to watch the Leeds replay to have anything meaningful to say. Just saw the goals. Did catch Spurs-Arse…I’m with Plug on the Gabriel ‘foul’. I don’t know what the answer is, but there’s just no consistency at all.

Elliott, it is unfortunate, but I don’t know what else we do. Being biased, I wonder why Pool just don’t take him back, but they’re clearly not going to play him either. For us, it’s the money rules and Monchi probably being a little panicked there at the end. I guess the only upside for Harvey is that he’ll likely get Europa minutes to help us rotate.

Any rate, I’ll get myself sorted and have a fresh set of thoughts up for Wolves. One thing I’ll touch on is the “Emery profile” for a player and also Villa’s style as a whole. Read a good piece while I was in an airport that presented good data on where Villa fall on the possession/countering scale.
