Gripes, Grumbles, Brentford and Palace

Gripes, Grumbles, Brentford and Palace

Goalless and winless in two, Villa have definitely not gotten off to a flying start this season. The concise version? Lethargic first halves followed by better second halves with little to show for it. Bit more nuanced than that, of course, but you get the idea.

Naturally, everyone’s asking what’s wrong. Since I’m not part of the squad, can’t say for sure. Some are pointing to selections and set-up, which can obviously be a factor. Some are pointing to certain players, which can also be fair. Some (me included) are wondering about uncertainty in the squad and the effect financial restraints leading to the sale of Jacob Ramsey.

Could be and probably is some credence to all of the above. Which brings me to some gripes.

First, we can all agree the financial restrictions are ludicrous. I’m sure none of us want to see clubs run into administration, but that’s not what these rules are about. That’s just the window dressing for keeping the non-Super League invitees from getting in on the action. NSWE could easily post collateral that would cover any and all expenses, but no one’s interested in actual solvency. Man Utd can carry a half-billion pounds in debt playing in a crumbling Old Trafford, no problem, and still trade on their revenue advantage. Villa, debt-free and every bit as well-backed, cannot invest. There are plenty of other examples.

So here we are, hamstrung, trying to just tread water, never mind improve while also suffering the indignity of being circled by ‘big-club’ vultures in what has turned out to be a window that demonstrates the forced inequality. While we still await word that SFA will ultimately be done about City’s blatant cheating, the banked clubs are buying everyone under the sun and once again weakening their competition by plucking away their best players while they try to comply with these rules.

It’s angered me more this season because it’s like having a door slammed in your face and being held to ransom to now stand outside the club to which you’ve just been denied entry. The issue being that it’s the only club. Villa, Palace, Forest, Newcastle and others should only be looking up based on what they’ve achieved rather than retrenching.

Then there’s the window itself, which I think needs reforming. I don’t think it should extend past the start of a league’s season for one. And if it keeps doing so, then only business/interests/negotiated initiated by some earlier point should be allowed. “Registered interest”, let’s call it. All the dominoes still falling while points are being played for, and clubs being left out of options to source replacements when the music stops. Clubs who do not have to or want to sell, but whose players are having their heads turned, their camps and preparations disrupted.

Of course it’s happening to others as well, and of course movement has always been part of the game. But I think it’s gotten out of hand. If you’re a player and you sign a contract, well, there you go. If you have express promises made that you’ll be able to leave if x, y, or z happens, then get it in writing along with, or in place of, a release clause. Otherwise, don’t sign the contract. The Grealish saga ended fairly quickly, for example. City were clear in their interest, met the price, got it over with. Everyone moved on with time to spare.

Again, I think all of this goes to explain a lot of what we’ve seen in Villa over the first two matches. Players don’t know who’ll be here, if they’ll be here, if Emery will keep putting up with it. Whether this is the end of the Villa comeback. And all down to Villa and the other 14 having their hands tied.

Which naturally means I wake up to stories of arrogant United—knocked out by Grimsby FFS and trying to decide what to do with Amorim—apparently returning for Martinez the day before the window closes and we host Palace. An irrelevant sh*tshow at the moment, only sowing chaos because they’re a mess, but a mess propped up by massive debt and entrenched revenue from a global base of plastic fans.

It’s farcical. And I didn’t even get to Brentford, but what’s there to say, really.

Anyway. Over to you.

Never mind. One day soon, the saudi league will be the only game in town and FIFA/EUFA will have no one to dictate to. Then we can all watch real football at Walsall, Tranmere and Oldham etc.

Martinez is hard for me as depending on what you read, he has wanted a move. And if Villa want to cash in, this is the time.

But. United screwing around all window, wanting to get him on the cheap, and leaving it to now is really too much.

Seems like Cash read all the comments post Man U and took it extremely personally.

Palace look like a team that isn’t used to playing twice a week. We look like we aren’t used to playing at all.

Still think the attitude is off. But at least the balance is better than the first two games

We most certainly have been second best but we have also been screwed twice by the officials. Why didn’t hughes get a booking? His foul on Rogers was far more obnoxious than the one that got them a penalty and Bizot a booking. Secondly, surely Mings being pulled down in the last minute was worth a looking at.

Sickly feeling that there is no one on the bench except possibly Buendia that Emery can bring on to change the game. The same plodders will just have to plod on.

That was absolute garbage. Not a professional performance. Regardless of the circumstances you at least have to do the basics as a professional. What on earth has Unai had them doing during the week? They looked completely lost.
And what was he doing playing Burrows at RB but with Bogarde on the bench?

I’m sceptical about that view. They’re good players bought for a high price and non of them are past it age-wise. The squad was lopsided before the Jan loan players, now we’ve lost the loans and also JJ. Add in that Emery is setting them up in a counterintuitive way, and they look like they’ve been out on the lash the night before. The players take some blame, but they look very disorganised and that’s Emery’s job.

The window shuts tomorrow. See where we are squad wise, unplug, forget about August and take a fresh attitude into the rest of the season…

At least Emery talked a good game in the post-game, although I’m still not sure what his definition of “dominated” is

That was nonsense. Palace weren’t 3 goals better than us. They were 5 or 6 goals better. Suspect that this is going to be a rebuild season. Emery has matured Dean Smith’s players to their maximum potential but now they seem to be in rapid decline. I reckon our problems go deeper than PSR and SCR. Have the players gone tone deaf to Emery? How deep into Team Emery are our owners? Will we do an MON by wining all our away games and losing our home games?

At least I haven’t wasted a 200 miles road trip and blown 70 odd pounds. WE ARE ALL DOOMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No leaders at all in our team,I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow but I,tonight martinez shit the bed but rest team seemed to down tools with him
Palace didn’t have to work to score there goals, the 3 lads going with England tomorrow were a disgrace, mings coming out afterwards with interview, yet what’s was he doing for 3rd goal,
Yes emery has minus 10m transfer spend but our squad is much worse than when he took over look a 17 year as sub tonight, is burrows better or worse than dobbin junior redmond, ned that monchi has signed

Not the best way to start the season. But the cracks started to appear last December with the loans of Rashford and Asensio for the last 1/2 of the season to help gain Champions League in 25/26. With both on 300,000 a week in wages we were foolish to think it would be carried on for this season. They have proved to be too big a loss on the pitch going forward for Villa. Villa are essentially broke, they are at their limit for PSR and overdrawn for UEFA. They made an Iffy sale of the women’s team. Not until the parameters of FFP are changed they will always be a developing/selling club. Mind you at a high level of skill.
Last year I suggested that Watkins be sold and Duran kept. It would have made sense to me even though Duran is a nut bag. Now, Watkins is on the downward cycle of his career money wise. Martinez is at his highest worth right now and we can see he just might go. Sad but the best outcome for the club. What’s unfortunate is the selling of Ramsay, Villa won’t get his best years before his sell on. Same with Rodgers if he goes too. Forced to keep Digne and also Cash beyond their sell by date as younger players are too expensive or need too much time to improve. Neither of them have any sell on value.
It’s a balancing act for Emery and Monchi to find that fine line of skirting PSR and keeping Villa in the top 6.
There isn’t any chance to give younger players or bench players minutes on the pitch. This leads to a disconnect with the team and robs said players of confidence and a feeling of belonging.
I don’t know how close to the edge Villa are regarding PSR but I would think selling Martinez and or Rodgers will give me a good idea. Also the level of quality of players that might be brought in. Bizet has a good resume, that was my first inkling of trouble. He’s too good to sit on the bench. Also at 34 on the downward side of his worth.
As much as I hate to think of it, this is a re-organizing or re-building of the team going forward. If Champions League had of happened it would have only prevented the inevitable that we are seeing now. Picture a lumberjack at a log rolling competition-that’s Villa.

Can’t disagree with anything written above. I had a feeling of foreboding from the moment I saw the team sheet. No Martinez and a bench full of kids. And I did something I’d never done since Unai has been in charge, left VP after the 3rd goal went in.

Playing a slow pedantic, predictable game you get away with it when the team are winning. When it starts producing losses things turn grim. Where was the passion? Where was the effort? Where was the movement? Where was the team that knocked over Citeh, the Arse, PSG, Bayern?

I nearly said Malen ran his channel except he didn’t run it, just stayed there with little movement instead of getting some touch line chalk on his boots. Hurtzeler’s job was made easy. His team which played just 3 days earlier had more effort, shape, movement and desire. Unacceptable from Villa.

I’m now convinced after just 3 games that we will not have to worry about UEFA’s SCR rules as we won’t be anywhere near Europe next season. I don’t think the Europa League this season is a goer either. After the window closes today, somebody in authority needs to speak to the fans and come clean on where the plan is heading.

Unai has never addressed a glaring need, that of a tricky speedster on the wing. We’ve seen plenty front up against us but never acquired one. No doubt other Lifers can name other positions equally neglected. Very downhearted right now.
