Given the start time, I was up entirely too early to watch this one properly following a late night with friends. However, I did manage to watch most of it on my phone in bed and found myself wishing I’d kept sleeping.
There’s been a lot of talk about this one, the first half in particular. I missed Elanga’s early chance, did see Bizot’s subsequent save from Gordon. There was a free header looped over. From a big chances-created standpoint, I’ll say I hardly agree with Alan Shearer that Villa were absolutely battered. Should Elanga have scored? Probably. But that’s why there are goalkeepers and god knows how many times Villa have started games bossing proceedings only to regret not capitalizing. One might remember losing to the same opponent 1-5 and Sir Alex thinking Villa played the better football.
So, what I saw was simply a very aggressive press and Villa lacking the composure—or the quality on the day—to play out and get a foothold. Newcastle were well aware of where and how they wanted to apply that pressure, and it left Villa frustrated and on the back foot.
After the half, it was a different story with Villa seizing the initiative and looking the more likely to score until Gordon got free and Konsa pulled him back. Bit of a flop to sell it, but it was hardly controversial. From there, you don’t expect much, although I thought Villa might sneak a late one given the way the game was being played. Emery only bringing on Malen seems to imply he had the same feeling.
Regardless, Villa defended well and pulled out a solid point, given the circumstances, and on balance, this might not have been a bad exercise.
Details
Me, I didn’t really have a problem with the lineup. Kamara and Onana in the double-pivot is a look Emery likes and would’ve used more if Onana hadn’t been out so much last season. It obviously lets Youri play further up and shields the back line pretty well. On the day, though, perhaps it would’ve been better if Youri had been deeper to help the quality of the balls being played out. That said, everyone was under intense pressure and it’s hard to do a lot racing back to your goal to receive with someone right on you.
Elsewhere, I’m also never quite sure about SJM in contests like this. You like his doggedness and combativeness, but he’s not always the passer or handler you want. Buendia might have been the better pick for his superior passing and vision, but you’re probably giving up a bit of defensive cover.
My guess is that Emery, well acquainted with Newcastle’s pace and style, expected what he saw, and wanted a defensively solid set-up to keep things under control at the start knowing he could change it round. The way the game turned, he might well have been onto the winning strategy without the red. And I’m also going to assume he’d have thought Villa would be sharper. It will be interesting to see if employs this set-up against other aggressive presses because high-pressing teams basically go all out to gain the advantage as early as they can, and I don’t think it’s negative to hedge your bets and approach the game as a 90-minute arc. Villa returned the favor to start the second and Newcastle didn’t have quite the same energy or composure as they started with.
The other element not helping on the day is that Burn and Shärr are a very good central pairing, better than any we can put out. Quick, strong, and combative, they’re not easy to catch out or push around. And Shärr, at least, has a better range of passing than either Konsa or Mings. Questions are obviously being asked about Konsa, and if I were in charge and not being held back by spending rules, I’d have been signing an aggressive, world-class CB this summer, followed by an elite RFB. And if were in charge we’d also likely be in League One.
In the end, a point and clean sheet against Newcastle is generally a reasonable outcome, especially the way it played out. And I’m pretty sure that our approach is going to evolve depending on how the window winds down. Guessand will play a bigger role, hopefully Malen, too.
So there’s that.
Back to the Window
As to the window, Bailey’s gone out on loan, Dendoncker’s just gone, and we seem to be edging closer to an Asensio return. The Trossard talk has quieted down, and I’m wondering if Monchi & Co are pushing things to the wire to see what Jackson’s clearout price comes down to. Don’t ask me to make sense of where any of this would leave us with our wages conundrum because I don’t think anyone outside the club and the authorities really knows. Bailey and Coutinho probably accounted for a pretty decent share, though. Think I saw Leon was on £124k a week, or some such. Not sure I ever saw a figure for Phil, but it might’ve been closer to astronomical.
If either of those latter two deals comes off, though, the side would have fairly considerable attacking strength and form/opponent/rotation options. Like everyone, I wonder about Jackson’s temperament, but he’s a player Emery knows. Trossard would be interesting because he’s so slippery and good with the ball.
But that’s wages and dead weight off the books. It’s obvious Emery wasn’t looking to keep hold of Bailey, nor did we struggle that hard to hold onto Ramsey.
For Emery, unable to make all the changes he’d like as quickly as he’d like, the challenge is that he still has a number of players that wouldn’t be his first choice in a perfect world. To my mind, he has to adapt Villa’s game plans and management to the limitations of what he has. He’s a brilliant manager, but can’t transform players’ basic qualities. They’ve all had their moments, but the mean level of quality in say McGinn, Cash, Bailey, and Ramsey is not elite. And even though Konsa and Mings have gotten their England call-ups, they’re not truly elite, either. But Emery realizes the value of the combination and experience, their physical pluses, and has again deemed them good enough so as to focus elsewhere.
McGinn doesn’t have a lot of suitors for this reason, nor Cash. But again, they’re good enough to keep them from needing to be priorities. Ramsey, who knows without the injuries. Bailey, well. For me, the upside is that Emery and Monchi haven’t been shy about taking top valuations to balance the books and make changes. But only if the player is deemed dispensable. Duran was probably the hardest decision, being so young and having so much upside. Ollie, Rogers, Martinez…they’d all have a price, too, but clearly these are players Villa will not sell just to balance the books a little.
Congratulations
And last, but certainly not least, congratulations to Morgan Rogers on his very well-deserved Young Player of the Year award. Here’s to more from him.
Over to you.
Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

A much more balanced view of the game John than anything Shearer can give. When it comes to his beloved team I switch off to avoid the bias. Reports also surfacing that Iling-Junior will be loaned out. It will be interesting to see our team pool after the window closes.
Thoughts turning to Brentford this weekend, I wonder what selection Unai will run with. Things have changed down there, no more Frank or Mbeuno and it seems like Wissa is pissed off too. Norgaard gone. We know what to expect with Frank, but the new guy is an unknown at the moment.
Yeah, Brentford are in a tricky spot, Plug. Been interesting watching Mbueno and Wissa grow and play their ways upward. Unknown quantity indeed.
Emery has favoured consistency so you’d guess the lineup will be similar to last week, but I hope there’s some more attacking impetus. Also, like JC said in the main post, you’d think Unai also assumed the boys would be much sharper than the showing in the first half…
And naturally as soon as I write this I see something saying Forest are interested in getting Cash back for depth. I’m thinking he’d rather be the favored starter (for now, anyway) at Villa. Moreno seems to be edging closer to the exit.
Apparently we’ve also had a bid knocked back for Jaydee Canvot (CB), and are expected to submit an improved offer.
Seeing unsolicited advice recommending Wissa and Elliott, both of which seem highly unlikely to me. So expect to see one or the other in a Villa shirt sometime next week.
I wouldn’t mind a couple more reinforcements, but I’m also looking forward to the window closing. But then I suppose they just move on to talking about January.
Still a way to go in the window, but with the clear-out of second-level talent, might the youngsters get more of a run-out this season in backup or cup duties? Bogarde has done the job when called on and Hemmings looked great in the pre-season.
I would think so, but I guess we have to see when the dust settles. Iling-Jr on the bench Saturday, now rumored to be heading back out on loan. Jimoh-Aloba and Wright on the bench, no Hemmings.
So, we clear out, make another signing or two and see what spots are left. But you’d like to think the ones who showed promise will get those chances. The value on a breakthrough or two is pretty high.
You’d hope for chances but has Emery been burned by the Philogene experience last season? Even Bogarde was on the point of an exit before the Celtic game and it’s only this preseason where he’s become a bona fide squad member.
I really like the look of Hemmings, I’d happily see him instead of Barkley. Jimoh-Aloba I’m not sure he’s ready, and after losing JJ and Bailey I think we need one more ball carrying forward.
Agree, Jimoh-Aloba will need a lot more time in the rough and tumble to get his confidence and game where it needs to be. Hoping Guessand is an upgrade on JJ, though you hate not to have both to fight it out.
Not sure why Malen isn’t necessarily seen as a direct replacement for Bailey. Maybe he is. But I can understand why we’re seemingly still in for another attacker.
So here I am ill-advisedly checking in on Villa news and see two articles: the arse want Rogers since Havertz is hurt, and the barcodes want Ollie.
Who knows what truth there is to it, but I can’t tell you how impolite I’d be if I were picking up the phone at Villa Park. Talk about taking the piss.
The best they could hope to hear is “Just sign over the Isak check, job done.”
Newcastle have royally fumbled the bag this summer. Champions league qualification and one of the hottest properties in Isak, they somehow managed to alienate their star and watch all of the prospective replacements go elsewhere…
In comparison to them, anyone looks organised and we can feel that way about our transfer team. Given the restrictions of the UEFA agreement, our business has been restrained but thought through. I saw the Rogers talk is in the gossip section, nuff said…but again whatever happens, under NSWE our transfers have generally had at least some medium term strategy behind it
The recruitment team are focused on reducing the wage bill to comply with UEFA SCR rules. Because our revenue isn’t yet at levels required to sustain higher amounts. In the past we’ve played the game with EPL’s PSR rules involving other clubs in similar situations. Kellyman, Dobbin, Iling-Junior, Barrenechea fall into this category. But the incoming ones all register significant wages which sting so loans are needed to offset the effects. Monchi and co have been good at this.
There’s reports noted that Garcia may be loaned/sold and likewise Forest’s interest in Cash has surfaced. Right full back could be one position to watch between now and the end of the month.
I finally had a look at some of the highlights from the 1st weekend, and having reviewed ours, two things stood out much more than while watching live.
Firstly, the individual defending/decision making was atrocious on the 2 big moments (Elanga’s shot and Konsa red). For Elanga’s shot, Digne is quite far ahead of Elanga and if he chose to go back with him, he would’ve intercepted the pass. He instead chose to try offside even tho Elanga was in his own half – and still got very close to cutting out the pass. For Konsa, his acceleration is non existent, then as fast as Gordon is, if Konsa just steps across Gordon, he can easily block Gordon out, because his starting position is fine. As much as he hardly touched Gordon, he was asking for a red by putting his hand on the shoulder, and you could even argue that it saved us the point.
The second thing is something JC wrote about in preseason … we are SO vulnerable to having a period of calm, then suddenly having to scramble to defend a breakaway. We had two very different examples last week, but both counter-attacks came from almost nowhere.
And a final thought, that’s two games in a row where a Cash pass/brain fart has directly led to a red card…
My thoughts entirely Henry. If I’d directly caused a red card 2 games running I’d be really upset so Cash must be affected by it also. Konsa’s form over the past season has concerned me. It’s all well and good playing with a straight edge back row on the half way line but if flyers are in the vicinity, the defender needs to give himself a few paces start to step across the danger as you say, or be fast enough to prevent any damage. Had he managed to step across Gordon, no doubt he would have gone down for a free kick and hope against hope the ref bales him out. A dangerous game. Give me pace in at least one of the CB’s every time.
On the other side of the debate, a clean sheet against the Wai Ayes is to be commended. It needed a defensive performance but we did meet them at the worst possible time. Would have been nice to come up against them after one of their UCL games.
Haven’t picked up anything on the grape vine concerning Garcia’s injury. He missed most if not all pre season and is still out.
I agree with all of that Plug, especially the need for pace at the back.
Garcia and Barkley both intrigue me, they’ve been a scent since Walsall. No injury info, are they being offered around? Barkley especially would represent a huge salary saving, to go towards the squad salary ratio reduction.
After Bailey and Dendonker leaving, what unproductive deadwood is left? Moreno is supposedly close to going. Dobbin, Illing jnr (I wouldn’t mind him sticking around until Jan so we can have a proper look at him).
Just to avoid getting too nested, will break out decision-making: This is huge, it’s everything really. And it’s obvious when you look at the two bookending red cards. An underweighted pass (which maybe isn’t really ‘decision-making’ as opposed to poor execution), and a hopeful cross chipped in.
Richard Dunne, of all people, was being interviewed and mentioned Villa being slow, something I’ve noted a lot, and covering less distance than almost anyone. Not surprising when you watch us. Slow is slow, distance derives somewhat from that because the tactics and positioning take into account our relative slowness. I say partly because the tactics don’t necessarily have to be exclusively down to speed.
Anyway. All adds up to being very vulnerable on the counter, less inclined to press high and aggressively, more oriented to playing patient football with the side building and retaining their shape.
Poor/rash decisions can obviously undo everything. Keep hold, keep it moving, but don’t do stupid things, ie, really low-percentage things. And passing into the middle is one of those, especially when the entire side has moved up. There’s a lot of congestion, it’s easy to have a pass picked off, go to no one, be mishandled…Lots of bad things happen.
So you want sequences where there’s a controlled end product, like a cross from Digne, an overlap with a cutback pass players are expecting. The end product is basically anything that puts defenders under pressure and gives attackers the advantage (running onto something). Ideally, if the sequence doesn’t end in a goal, it ends with a corner, goal kick, throw in…or a long punted clearance.
The worst case is a sequence with a hopeful ball to no one in particular (even if it’s in the danger zone) that’s up for grabs and allows the defense to pounce, be facing upfield and break. And teams are looking to pounce and break against us.
We’re in less danger ourselves when we break simply because there isn’t the chance for more players to run up and get involved.
But…whole point is that being disciplined in positioning and making good decisions is how you avoid the Gordon situation. A good decision for Cash in that scenario might very well have been playing for a corner or throw. But if you get too excited, you’re over-focusing on putting the ball into the mix, and not feeling the bigger picture.
I think Bailey was also guilty of this far too often, trying to make something happen (god bless), but losing sight of ‘the possession’ as a whole. Very fine balance, and it’s really down to how the game plays in your head. It’s generally playing slow for a Tielemans. For a Cash or Bailey, it’s all a bit more narrow and rushed.
And of course, the aggressive press is intended to make it all narrow and rushed for everyone, force things into an eventual cul-de-sac that leads to a sequence of poor passes, decisions, and mishandles with the only outlet options being very obvious and easy to pounce on.
Ollie is clever, generally makes pretty good decisions, but isn’t lightning fast. We know what Rogers is. Malen is dangerous, but maybe not outsprinting everyone. And the longer balls out from us are a very mixed bag.
So if Cash and Konsa get flustered, your cannier players are on the left (Pau or Mings, Digne), it’s easy to press us over into that left corner, and there’s low risk of a long switch or upfield pass finding its target and being handled well. Cash, Konsa, Bailey, and JJ, yes, all fall into that box of not consistently making killer decisions, feeling the situation, handling well, and just doing the simple thing. SJM also can be let down by his touch, but he does see the pitch. He does seem to have been caught out a lot, though, wanting that extra moment to decide.
I’m really interested in the thought exercise of “if money/PSR was no object”. You have to match aggression presses with aggression. We don’t seem to have the players for Emery to be able to have aggression as part of Plan A. If Richard Dunne can see the slowness then Emery can, but here we are with this mix of players…I wonder if Emery will have the patience for 3 years of ‘sell more than we spend’.
Watkins, Mings, Konsa, Cash, McGinn, even Martinez are all getting to the stage when they’ll run into Father Time, and we’ll need to buy replacements while also strengthening other positions but maintaining a positive transfer balance. Are we going to be able to balance the money while also improving the quality, athleticism and football IQ of the squad?
We have an elite manager, and you can see with just a few tweaks we would end up in fewer cul-de-sacs, with fewer turnovers, more control, more intimidation of the opposition, etc.
Coming back, but yes, you’re right. Emery’s gotten a lot out of a pretty mismatched squad. But there’s only so much ceiling to each player, and they simply can’t hit that each time out.
I’m wondering whether Villa will pull a Forest and just spend, retool, and take the hit. And I also wonder whether Emery will get frustrated.
I have so many thoughts on this topic, because it really gets to the heart of the matter. When Unai joined, based on what I saw of his stint with Arsenal, I expected pragmatic (defensive) structured football. Instead in that first 6 months, we got attacking, aggressive risk-reward football, where we sucked the oppo towards Martinez, then suddenly sprang the ball forward at high tempo. Since Feb 2024 we’ve incrementally decelerated.
Slowness isn’t just in the sprinting, it’s in how long it takes to set up a free kick, it’s how long it takes to get into position for a goal kick, for a throw in, after breaking the line for a tackle…it bleeds into everything. You can’t expect PSG style relentlessness but just the ability to change the tempo for 5 minutes would give the oppo something different to think about. It would force them to take a backwards step.
Then as you say, there is slowness in decision making, which at this level is very punishing.
I think for the level of control that Emery wants, the pace has to increase. I totally agree with you about planning a move to end with the ball going dead to eliminate the possibility of a counter, and again that requires being one step ahead of the opposition, to be in control of the situation.
Emery is an adept tactician, so you just can’t imagine he’s missed any of this, so it’s a puzzle that it’s been a theme for patches of the last 12 months.
And another important point you raised is that all of the other teams are setting up this way against us. They’ve noticed that they can exploit it, so we have to change to stop dropping points that would put us in a comfortable top 4 position. Because looking at the opening round, I didn’t see any teams that were obviously a cut above us.
Plenty of opposition teams now deploy an aggressive press against our slow deliberate play at the back, for goal kicks and the like. They’ve noted it gets results. If we do manage to beat the press opponents quickly form a solid wall in front of us to deny space and room to manoeuvre. It’s our slow speed of thought that let’s them do this. Getting into the space behind the press then requires rapid passing to exploit the situation but we are too often deliberate in our possession play which does minimal damage to the other team. I’ve watched Citeh who pass the ball endlessly in possession but at a pace higher than we do and it pulls the opposition out of shape and creates small gaps to work openings.
Most teams now also deploy the high line to compress play. Ollie, Malen, Guessand need to be ready to dart from the half way line into the space behind and the midfield needs to be looking for the intended runs. Just like Gordon and Elanga last week.
Just want to wish Alex Moreno all the best on his return to Spain with Girona. I quite liked his contributions.
Emery press conference, was it just me or did he look worn out, with only 1 match played is it a worry
He looked the same as usual to me JV. But he did need a shave. Most of his pressers follow the same routine, being consistent etc and with minimum input on injuries to give nothing away to the opposition. Bailey is no longer an option for him so I think he will push for a suitable replacement before the window closes as his alternatives of playing SJM or Malen on the RW mean a different kind of set up. No mention of Jimoh so he doesn’t think he’s ready yet.
Just seen the line up. Have we ever seen Mings and Pau start a match together before? 2 left foot CBs, can we cope with the horror of it all?
Even worse, we might be going 3 at the back with Cash as the RCB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh dear, Pau caught out for speed from a route one long ball over the top.
This is torture. Pau has got no pace whatsoever. Ollie has had nothing in the way of service. One ball to him during stoppage time and that’s been it. Kamara off after 15 minutes injured. SJM on the RW. We just don’t look like scoring.
Crap first half where our cultured slow paced control of the ball was just battered by a fast physical brentford side. Once Kam went off and Tmans put back into his proper position, we seem to be edging our way into the game inch by inch.
Don’t think Konsa is a loss in this game. Mings just as effective at RCB. Much as I think SJM is the fighting heart of the team, I don’t get Malen not playing at RW.
Shout out for getting Collins in as our RCB. Always liked him since his stoke days.
Yeah, rough half,
Doesn’t get any more frustrating than that.
Well that was poor. You can have all the possession in the world, but if the players in front of the ball are static, nothing happens. Couldn’t see where a goal was coming from. No cutting edge.
If we persist with this formation and selection I believe we will be lurking in the bottom half of the table. Does anyone know why Unai was wearing a black tie?
There will be a meltdown on the social media posts after this display. Brentford are just journeymen, no more. They carried out the standard plan against Villa. Stay compact with all men behind the ball and break with lightning speed when a chance happens. If Villa fanny around with their slow ball at the back at goal kicks etc. apply the press for rewards but if they beat it, park the bus immediately. It works against us each time it’s deployed.
It’s hard, Plug. Giving up the first goal has cost us so many times. And when you’re just not sharp on top of it, none of the fast moves come off, and no one’s coming up with a moment of magic to ignite the side.
I think it’ll pass as far as our play goes, but the tactics against us will be the same.
Brentford’s simple basic honest endeavor football trumps our overcomplicated fussy scientific control of the ball football.
We are becoming notorious for our cautious dozy dull witted slow first halves. Are we becoming same old same old?
Note to Emery. The first name on the team sheet should be Tmans in his best position, then fill in the side around him. Mings looked good as the last man CH. Should have given Torres the security to do his play out from the back thing. Becoming disenchanted with Konsa at RCB, Mings much more effective. I think I saw the seeds of a 3 at the back system with Mings as the middle CB.
My only hope is that we can get our bad patch over at the start of the season then take off.
Not a meltdown, but we look awful, setup was wrong again ,emery has done this to many times now, even 1st sub was wrong, our recruitment is start to look pretty poor,3 of last 4 big signings on bench again, asenio ain’t the answer either,we are so one paced, lightweight no duran to bail us out
Emery monchi have massive 9 days coming up
Yeah I have to say Don Unai has to cop some responsibility for an unsuitable lineup. Start with a balanced side, at least. The bench looked very thin when we were bringing on Bogarde to turn the game around…
If I had to pick a potm, it would be Mings.
3 league games without a goal, back to lambert days lol, cash playing fullback is bad,,cash hitting corners nightmare stuff, how hard is it to get decent fullback that doesn’t cost millions or be paid 80thousand a week either
Barclay konsa and garcia missing, and our bench includes 2keepers and 2 u18 ,some shocking miss management under purslow and co
Well, a post-match facetime catch-up with the little grandkids lightened my spirits a bit.
But.
Can’t say I know what’s going on. Lethargic again, first half, caught out on their one chance due to Torres’ lack of pace and Cash somehow contriving to provide the assist.
Everyone’s touch seems off. Rogers miles off it. Thought Buendia brought a spark, and it really did seem like a goal was inevitable, but so many bodies in the box and no kind bounces. We looked much better playing quickly, but we couldn’t really sustain the passages or find the final ball. I sort of understand bringing Bogarde on, but he was indecisive…Brentford almost inviting him to shoot, not the player you want to be seeing so much of the ball down the stretch.
Set-up or no, we just didn’t play well enough for long enough periods. Me, seeing the overall sort of discombobulation after looking so much smoother against Marseilles leaves me wondering if the squad’s heads aren’t settled. I’m hoping we can do more business, but seems to me like the sooner the window shuts the better.
Same thoughts as above. That was not good.
I was not overly impressed with some of the body language in the 2nd half. There didn’t seem to be too much motivation to get back into the game. Are there a few who weren’t sure if they were staying or going this summer and are well short of fitness? Whatever the rest of the window brings, they’ll need to show much more desire to win any matches.
And I had a go at Konsa for being slow last week but that was not professional standard from Torres, he must be injured, that was not a normal running speed for a pro athlete.
Yeah, in doing some reading round after, it sounds like the squad is a bit deflated, and I’m seeing that echoed at other clubs.
Selling Ramsey, not being able to push on, watching the revenue-rich clubs splash cash all over, it’s probably hard not to feel for a moment at least that no matter how well you do, it won’t be enough. And Villa are still having to tell these clubs who can’t spend fast enough that our core players aren’t for sale.
Seems like it’s been unsettling window for a few more than just us.
It’s very odd. There’s often talk about being a unit so I guess at some point there is an emotional dip in losing someone in the way we sold JJ. It definitely does feel flat. Hopefully we get a win or performance from somewhere and when the window is shut, the minds will adjust/accept to reality and focus on the goals for the season. Because they are much better than these first two games (although they look a lot like they did in January, performance-wise)
Morning after another dismal showing, kamara is injured and no word on mings, last night we were linked with chelsea forward nunku another tiny weak options, emery is getting plenty of stick some of it deserved, reason Brentford goalscorer was debutant guissand was our 5th sub,if this continues the north stand extension won’t be needed
Been watching the Fulham v Manure game. The EPL is corrupt as fuck as the song goes. Manure get a penalty picked up by VAR. Manure get awarded a goal despite the defender being pushed in the back using both hands. Where was VAR? Silent of course.
Yesterday it was the Arse who brought on a 15 year old kid at 4-0. He took a dive in the penalty area worthy of a yellow card for simulation. Horizontal and as he hit the turf he sticks his left leg out to connect with a defender’s leg. Penalty awarded. Where was VAR? Silent of course. Entitled team bias. Over a season you could fill an encyclopaedia with examples like these favouring them. Level playing field with PSR and SCR? Get out of it. Level playing field with officials decisions? Get out of it squared.
Big week coming, will we get any new faces ,loose any of regulars, eurpa draw Friday, match Sunday evening, at least Saturday night won’t be ruined, has robbo got lost in the close season
I’ve been wondering where r0bb0 is, JV.
Watched the Wai Ayes v Dippers last night. The Wai Ayes deployed their usual MO, kick anything that moved, roll over and over at any contact from the opposition and leave the noisy crowd to do the rest. The footie on display was fast and furious, even JJ looked quick when he came on. But with this type of performance comes the injuries. Tonali and Joelinton’s looked like a few weeks out. Gordon will get a 3 game ban for his tackle which was much worse than anything Big Jhon got sent off for up there.
Fascinating match, Plug. Pool were under just as much pressure as us. Probably handled it a bit better, which you’d expect, but not by a lot. The two goals sort of came out of nowhere, and naturally it was Gordon who got himself sent off this week.
Credit to toon for the fightback, but I can’t tell you how happy I was when it all went for nought right at the death.
Haha, same😂 I’m not too keen on their fans but I quite like this combo of manager and players. They’ve got fight, grit and they back themselves and give it maximum effort in almost all their games…BUT I was desperate for Liverpool to win, just because they’re our most direct competition.
Come the end of the season I’d much rather see a Newcastle in the CL spots than the likes of the sky 6…and I hope Gordon gets a few games added on to his ban lol
Tick tock, are we ,aren’t we going to sign anyone, monchi and co playing every thing close to themselves, local national media know nothing above villa’s business
If we can sign some players I hope we get a nasty b ,all our players are far too nice, even among ourselves don’t see bar mcginn giving a rally cry or kick up the arse
Such a strange window, JV, for obvious reasons. I’ve had a few thoughts (really?), so I’ll put those together as I really don’t have much to say about Brentford.
And yeah, we could use a couple nasty players. Saw a bit about us poking around Paqueta, who I really don’t like, but there’s one for you.
Cup draw tonight
Stadium decision tomorrow
Europa league draw Friday
Match Sunday
Transfer deadline Monday
Exciting times
Grimsby beat utd on penalties, what a wonderful night
Split my sides with laughter when Mbeumo hit the crossbar. Brentford away in round 3.
Europa League Draw coming up tomorrow. Of the teams already qualified, we are equal 7th on the UEFA coefficient list with Fenerbahçe which will put us in Pot 1 as there will be 9 teams in each pot and none of the deciding fixtures tonight contain teams with a higher coefficient than ours. Could we see Big Jhon back at Villa Park this autumn with Fenerbahçe??
Plug
I hope not, would hate to see him do a grealish, cheat against us
Would love to know how we seem not to have a pot to p** in,our revenue hits record numbers, yes it will go down this season,
Plug’s been doing a better job keeping track of the numbers, but I think it’s squad cost, the UEFA competition component that’s doing us in. So, typical: You qualify, get relegated to second-tier spending status so the big Euro clubs don’t get caught out, same as the Prem.
The European rules are going to affect forest Palace and possibly Newcastle next season,
Martinez bizot
Cash digne mings matasen konsa torres garcia
Tielmens kamara barclay onana
Mcginn rogers malen guissand watkins beundi
Bogarde
2 short for European squad, on top of that garcia barclay and kamara are out Injured
It’s hard to get excited, not a bit wonder the club is offering 20% of European league packages
Has heck done such a poor job ,trying to raise revenue when we had best 18months period for years
I seen wage bill for premier league sides and yes we are higher than spurs but only by 20m,how do our wage bill go from 110m to 250/260 for year when we have nett spend of -10m over 6 windows
Onana injured too, think townley said young lad that played well in pre season injured too,16 senior players available for Sunday, how can we went from beating Munich to now less than a year having lost carlos ramsay Bailey bida e and duran
And only signed malen and guissand
Europa League Draw:
Home:
Salzburg
Maccabi Tel Aviv
Young Boys
Bologna
Away:
Feyenoord
Fenerbahçe
Basel
Go Ahead Eagles
Initial thoughts. Pleased we didn’t have to meet Maccabi away. We will also be coming up against Big Jhon but away from home, minus of course Mourinho. That was written in the stars. Otherwise aim for top 8 Villa
Duran we meet again so soon, mourhino was sacked this morning and think carlos was sold in summer
Bit of a come down in names we are facing but overall bar away to feynoorf and fernavache should be favourite in rest, young boys and bologna from last year basle go ahead eagles ,Saltburn tel aviv

Watkins konsa and Rogers called up by England
At this minute all hope has gone of a decent season, how did bean counters get it this wrong
We fell foul of UEFA SCR rules during our Conference League season and picked up a £9.5 million fine. We have to assume once the results are published that our UCL season complies with everything due to greatly increased revenue giving us more headroom. Which leaves the current season where our bean counters are crimped due to reduced revenue from the Europa League. We’ve always managed to comply with the EPL rules but UEFA SCR stings us, especially as we do need to be in Europe each season for revenue purposes.
Calvo needs to pursue every avenue of possible revenue to get us out of this shit. The new watering hole behind the North Stand will help when it opens, as will the increased seating capacity at VP but these are down the line. We’ll also be looking for a new shirt sponsor next season once the betting adverts ban kicks in, like just about every other club. Attracting local big names like Cadbury’s or Land Rover seems to prove difficult. I’m sure he’s also considering revenue streams from other developments but again these will take time to come on tap.
It seems a severe punishment, especially for a club that has no debts at all,,have raised our revenue by almost double, have had great player trading
Spot on JV. An extremely well run club. UEFA can’t be having that, we might upset the status quo. Best whack them with a hefty fine for being a model example.
A pox on the EPL for dishing out a 7pm Sunday start on us. It’s a big inconvenience for me so I can’t imagine how the Palace away support feel.
It does feel like a tipping point has been reached with the spread of kick-off times – I’m born in 91, so I’m sure it’s long tipped over for older generations. There are hardly any Saturday 3pm games anymore, and with 9 out of 20 PL teams involved in Europe, it’ll get worse next month when Europe starts. I know it’s the accountants that make the decisions, but surely someone must realize that you have to keep the popular things and get rid of the unpopular things – like trying to find your way home late on a Sunday night.
I’m a big F1 fan, and the recent trend of cheap “pop-up” street tracks replacing actual race tracks just puts me off. And you can smell the stench of spreadsheets through the TV.
I’m all for change and invention, but you have to do it for the overall good, not just to rinse every last penny out of whichever “customer” you can get your hands on.
Another shocking day from var,Chelsea s game fulham had goal disallowed, pen awarded to chelsea into deep added time on injury time, utd game penalty taking 5 mins to give, goal disallowed for hand or something was offside
Spurs also lost at home to Bournemouth
Who will start tomorrow
Martinez cash mings konsa digne mcginn tielmens matasen rogers malen watkins subs
Bizot torres bogarde beundi guissand,
Game day, and unlike the last two games I won’t be making any predictions until I’ve seen the lineup. Injuries may well force a change of tactics, but either way I’d like to see more balance between attack and defence.
Interesting reading re transfers. One theory is that Villa decided to wait until the end of the window to bring in the final player(s), because then they would know which players have left and how much money they have to play with, so they can then get the max quality of player without breaching the rules. I’m not sure that I buy it. Before we sold JJ I thought we looked well set…
I hope the Paqueta rumor isn’t true. £50mil. He’s 28, would sign a 4 or 5year deal. I can’t imagine him charging around, pressing defences at 32/33 years old…he barely does it now
Victor lindorf looks to be carlos replacement, for a 4th choice what can we expect
Rumours today last night crazy
What a phone in on a podcast last night for the love of paul mcgrath, it was Interesting purslow getting lot of stick as did heck,on about stadium extension and one of hosts said ,the lion fan clubs must had meetings and seems moreorless tickets for European matches will be easily got,not good news for revenue, he said really poor outlook for season
Quite like this Victor Lindelöf idea if true. Always got in the way when we played manure. Mobile, gangly and raw-boned in a poor man’s Mellberg sort of way. Got the impression that he tried to do too much when playing for manure. Emery would be good for him.
Reminds me when GT2 signed Ronny Johnsen from manure last century. Good solid pro who quietly got us through a stagnant period at the end of Herbert’s twilight years.
PS – I’m still a Disasi fanboy!
Never wanted a transfer window to be over so much,no way we should be contemplating selling any of our stars, our finances can’t be that bad,if they are a ban from Europe would be better
Filing junior going to albino on loan
Another young scot coming in for a fee reputed over million, Wilson and kerr to highly rated youth players have really kicked on
Just fyi, put a fresh page where I basically just vent, but relatively briefly. Carry on, just know that it’s there for in-match, post-match, whatever.
