Aston Villa 0-3 Crystal Palace

Posted by John Clark | Sep 2, 2025 | AVL Blog, Match Reviews | 89

Aston Villa 0-3 Crystal Palace

Becoming an all-too-familiar scoreline, that, and, as I feared, a Villa side looking nowhere near themselves yet just weren’t competitive enough. It didn’t necessarily have to be that way, though.

Hard to be positive, but went out after to see some friends for a little backyard grilling, and it helped. I certainly wasn’t in the mood for going anywhere, but sitting and stewing never helps.

Match Itself
Once again, one of those really frustrating days. Thought it started well enough, Villa getting to play their way and fighting in midfield, winning possession back. Then the peno.

Naturally it brought Palace more into the game, but still wasn’t ‘terrible’ until Guehi’s goal. Take your pick between Cash and Konsa receiving more blame (or sharing it equally), but poor either way. Me, I lean toward Konsa playing that very very stupid and almost impossible pass. Just put a boot in it, FFS.

Third goal, you’d like to think Konsa could’ve done better tracking at the back post, and as someone said, a save Martinez might’ve made. There were other chances for Palace, but I didn’t necessarily see a bunch of gilt-edged ones go begging, and a number were definitely the kind you’re going to give up once you’re chasing.

For Villa, once again conceding first with seemingly no real danger afoot really put them at a disadvantage against a side like Palace. Too labored, too slow, too many nearly passes, too little cutting edge.

Tactics and Set-Up
I didn’t necessarily see much wrong in the set-up. Rogers was given his preferred role and room in the middle, Guessand and Malen were wide. Maatsen was in for Digne. It’s what most people have been asking for, as positive as we can be at the moment, and Emery was telling players here’s your chance. No one really took it.

McGinn in the pivot was about the only realistic option alongside Youri with Onana and Kamara out. Maatsen is trickier and faster than Digne, thought not as experienced. Cash, Konsa, Mings, Bizot. Not really anyone else to choose from as Pau just isn’t fast enough. And when he did come on, there wasn’t any notable contribution.

Bringing on Rowe and Bogarde, I’ve no problem with that. No idea what’s up with Garcia, but if he’s not fit enough, give the kid some minutes and I’m guessing Emery knew the game was gone since there were never three goals in us on the day. Not like he was a huge downgrade on Cash.

Performances
Rogers is completely off it and needs to pull his head out if he’s angling for a big move as it’s not coming if he keeps playing the way he has. I can see why Malen has been coming off the bench: as suspected, he isn’t doing enough off the ball, which doesn’t always show up in cameos. Guessand was in a tough spot, not a lot of room to work, though you’d have thought he and Maatsen might’ve made a little more happen. Lots of attempted through-balls that just weren’t good enough. If Ollie had managed to sneak his chance in, who knows, but he’s not seen much of the ball in any useful sense. Thought Buendia added a spark, and didn’t stop fighting, chasing, and harrying.

Youri was okay as was SJM. Konsa? I’m not sure how he’s getting England call-ups, to be honest. Mings has been doing what you expect and it’s interesting that Pau’s been second choice.

Reinforcements arrived at the last minute as we’d hoped, and as of this writing, looks like Martinez will be staying if he doesn’t fancy desert obscurity. I don’t know what that means in the dressing room, given Mings pointedly mentioning, “players who want to be here,” in his post-match comments. But again, that seems to get to the heart of the matter.

I get why players everywhere want moves. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re unhappy, usually just means they get more money and a chance to win more things. What you would like to see is for them to have their heads on straight like Guehi’s was yesterday. But right or wrong, I still think the nature of this window has been unsettling.

And with Martinez, I find it odd that he’d have his heart set on a move to United. They’re big right now in name only. Money? Okay. But they’re not in Europe, and I’m not sure what’s the point of leaving Villa unless it’s to a Super League side that’s actually playing midweek and aren’t a dysfunctional soap opera. So if it’s money, then as much as we’ve liked him he can fuck off to Saudi and help our finances. Doesn’t appear we were standing in his way. If he ends up staying, he needs to sack up. Me, I’d have been miffed United were trying to sign me on the cheap.

Overall
No, it’s not looked right. We struggled after the opener largely because Palace were knocking it around faster. We didn’t show enough quality when we did break, so we were facing an entrenched side playing just the way they want to. We obviously didn’t show enough quality in that phase to break them down. It’s where you want a moment of magic to jump-start things, and no one’s been anywhere near a wizard’s hat let alone a wand.

When it comes to intangibles, nothing is really breaking our way apart from Elanga’s effort in the opener. The deflected ball that ends up falling perfectly, the odd bounce…they’re just not there. But you can rightly say you make your own luck.

You’ve heard me say this a lot, which is that I don’t know what’s down to instruction and what’s down to the players. Also, and probably more important, that I think Emery has gotten as much out of the old core as anyone can. We’ve been punching above our weight, and if McGinn and others have to be at their absolute best, well, that generally isn’t going to happen week in, week out.

I don’t think Emery wants underhit over overhit passes, and I don’t think he necessarily wants such a slow pace. He’s cautious, yes, and I get the reasoning (turnovers = counters), but the dawdling and predictability without incision…it’s not like we haven’t seen the same players play quicker and sharper under him.

Recruitment? We’ve spent what we can, and clearly everyone in the building was in agreement that the big roll of the dice on Rashford and Asensio was warranted because they knew how important getting CL money again would be. We came up a point short. I’ll also say that Newcastle have been building on a better base than us since we came back up, and Palace had been underachieving for their roster. Glasner has simply got them playing the right way consistently. I’d expected them to be trouble in the league placings long before now.

But just because we could take that gamble in January doesn’t mean we can again. We’ve been up against FFP/PSR for a while, and and now it’s SCR. It’s meant we can’t go get the natural upgrades for Mings, Konsa, and Cash. Onana was big money spent on the right profile, but his injuries have made the return less than we’d have hoped. Maatsen, again, right kind of player for the way Emery wants to play, and the rotation there is something he likes. We could probably use another creative midfielder when it’s not Youri’s day.

We haven’t found the gems yet in the development signings we’ve made, but they have contributed to the bottom line when sold on. Though you’d have to say Duran was a pretty big hit, as was Rogers. Diaby? Who knows what might’ve been if we hadn’t been forced to sell. Malen can score, but needs to up his game. Guessand remains an unknown.

Are Elliott and Sancho the answer? Worth a punt. At least they have experience, deepen the squad, and offer something different. Lindelöf makes for decent insurance. Clearly these were inquiries that flew well below the radar, contingencies for when the transfers we were rumored to be gunning for didn’t come off. Not like Monchi & Co. have been sitting on their hands, though I’d like them to be hitting a little more on the Kosta/Garcia-type signings.

So yeah, it’s a crap start to the season. I have no idea what it means going forward, but the rules boxing us in are what they are. What needs to happen now is for everyone to buckle down, get their heads right, and go do their jobs.

Over to you.

    Emi redux.

So, after the dust settled I finally saw a few articles with more details on Martinez, which you’ve all no doubt read. Would appear that he has not covered himself in glory. Will be interesting to see what comes next, and it puts Mings’ dig into a little clearer context.

Me, I’m surprised Villa apparently sanctioned a £21.6m move to Fenerbahçe. Would seem we were willing to just get his wages off the books, as that’s rather low for a world-class keeper. So he’s not endeared himself to management either in wanting his move, it would seem.

And also for me, a little reminder about being credulous. I had it in my mind that we’d like to keep hold, but would let him go for the right price, and that this was something he understood at the tail end of the season. Which means he thought he’d be ‘forced’ to move on. But, seems much more like he’d decided he wanted a move and no one was that enamored.

He could still go to Turkey, but reports say he rejected that as late as today. So yeah, a bit of stench of his own making now creeping up, and he’s going to find precious little sympathy from any quarter.

If it was money driving Emi, then Manure’s unwillingness to pay it (and I can’t imagine Fenerbahce paying more than Villa) should tell him everything he needs to know. It’s get your head down time and fight for the Villa cause. Otherwise his career will start sliding towards lesser clubs.

At some point we must break the goal famine. Everton would be a good place to start.

Looking at the Palace goals again and in particular, the first one. Mateta receives the ball in acres of space with his marker Konsa standing well off him. This allowed Mateta all the time in the world to turn and play in his team mate for the penalty. Compare that to Palace’s 2 games against Frederikstad of Norway where Mateta never got a sniff. This was due to the CB Fredericksen taking up station on Mateta’s arse for 2 whole games and disrupting his play. The only chance Mateta got was at the death of the 2nd game when Fredericksen vacated his post and moved up front to try and get the required goal.

The second Palace goal was a direct result of Konsa playing a poor clearance ball out. And the third goal Konsa was ball watching and neglecting the player behind him who scored. Am I being unfair to him?

I’ll cast a vote saying you’re not. The one thing that’s bothered me is that most teams now have CBs glued to strikers and we don’t. I might say it’s down to Emery, but Mings and Konsa have never played that way. It’s an important point.

You aren’t wrong Plug, but I think loads of them are in the wrong place. Mings is the only one actually marking someone tightly. And how can the 2 CMs be so far away from the defenders? I think it was smart attack from palace who are a good team, and dumb defence from us. Which brings me onto our 4-4-2 out of possession, which I also think leaves us doing a lot of running without actually closing down the other team’s attacking space.

I’d say we’re on version 2 of Unai’s Villa tactically. First we had 12 months of drawing opponents in, then hitting them with direct balls to the 10s/Moreno. Then it was changed to this slow gradual progression, hoping Rogers/Diaby/Bailey/Asensio/Rashford can unlock the oppo. Now I really want Unai to show us an evolution in our play after the break, but I won’t be holding my breath…

I presume Onana was bought as backup for Kamara and maybe to replace Kamara if he didn’t sign a new contract. There seems to be an irritating pattern evolving where they are both injured at the same time. If this trend persists, it seems logical (to me) to flog one of them for SCR purposes. SACRILEDGE?

Wouldn’t get our hopes up about Everton next fortnight. Moyes’s simple practical down to earth football will duff over Emery’s over complicated cagey fancy dan stuff. The league has got wise to Emery now and he doesn’t seem able to adapt. This isn’t “Emery out”. He has brought class and prestige to the club but PSR/SCR will prevent him getting in the players he needs for his system. He has to adapt!

Onana got off to a good start and seems to have some personality which we desperately needed, so he had credit in the bank, but he (along with Barkley) is constantly injured, and it’s no use for us. He’s at minimum a decent player WHEN FIT. We just don’t have the finances to carry chronically injured players. Add in that Boulanger is the same and it creates a problem in CM. I’m bored of Onana, the most important ability is availability…

Good article as always JC, a far better and more accurate description of the first 3 weeks of the season than you’ll read on BBC, Sky or the like.

I don’t really want to talk about Palace or any of August again. I think the main thing is like you say at the top of the article, Villa haven’t looked themselves, the vibes are ‘off’ as the kids say.

Although we ended Monday stronger than we started, I’m not sure any of them are ones I would’ve picked at the start of the season, so that just leaves me hoping that the fit into the plan and give us the same kick that Asensio and Rashford did.

2 loans and a free transfer says (to me) that we couldn’t spend anymore. For Elliot we’ve dipped into next year’s piggy bank, as it’s a loan-to-buy. He’s only 22 which is at least the right age profile. I read that Sancho played 40 games last year and had double digit goal involvements…that’s an improvement on JJ, Bailey and Rashford… The transfers under Unai have been a lot more miss than hit, I think they’ve been trying too hard to look for players they can sell for big profit (Duran). From now on they need to be looking for players 24 years and under who will go straight into the match day squad. Instead of gambling on players, then having to replace them within a year.

After 3 consistently slow and lost performances, I’m ‘hoping’ that the club can throw august into the bin. They need to get their heads together, resolve any personal issues hanging around, and lift the mood. Hopefully then we will see 11 players who are focused and organised out on the pitch at all times, because that would be easily good enough to have us in the fight for Europe, where the wage bill suggests we should be.

It could be good for some of our lads to get amongst their national teams, to show/remind them of the level and mindset that players of successful clubs have at this stage of the season.

I’ll second your comment about JC’s script above being way more superior than anything appearing in the various media outlets.

We’ve bought Guessand and Bizot for a combined £35 million approx. This amount is amortised over their contract lengths for PSR calcs. Ramsey’s fee, or a sizeable chunk of it can therefore be added to the revenue stream for the current season helping fill the shortfall caused by Europa League in lieu of UCL. Big savings on wages are also achieved when you take into account the players loaned out/sold/released.

I’ll wager that once the finances are revealed for our UCL year, wages will come in below the 70% of revenue required by SCR. The actions we’ve seen during this last window tells me that wages will again come in below 70% mark for the current season.

I don’t know what the actual figures are, but yes our wages have been significantly slashed from the end of last season. I’d be surprised if we don’t comply with whatever agreement was reached.

Just thinking back to the first PSR summer last year and that Douglas Luiz transfer was a real disappointment. €50mil was less than Dougie was worth. We also paid Juve €20mil for two players who will never play a competitive game for us (Illing Jnr has even played against us!) and we also spent £50mil on Onana and £5mil on Barkley. I think it sums up our failed on-field/off-field alignment. They’re playing 3D chess and have tied themselves in knots. They have to get the basics of buying good enough ready-to-go players. Hopefully that started in this window

    Thanks for the kind words…

A thought on Onana. I don’t think he was bought as insurance. I really believe an Onana-Kamara pivot was the vision: Youri can play further up, and Onana is bigger and faster than Kamara, allowing Bouba to sit a little deeper, drop into a back three, and not be exposed for pace.

If you look at the formation, it’s basically 4-2-3-1 on the ball, and either 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 without. But, it’s very fluid…Rogers central can easily make it ‘4-4-2’-ish.

If there’s been any ‘confusion’, it’s trying to find that combo with Ollie up front. We’ve seen Youri, SJM, Buendia, Rogers and others taking that role, which is basically an advanced 10. My guess is Emery was wanting Asensio up there with Youri in, too, two lack
Pickers who are very tidy on the ball.

Same here. Onana was definitely a Plan A signing, so it’s very damaging that he’s often unavailable. I don’t really like Youri as a 10 and it only worked when we had Bailey stretching defences on the wing.

Yeah, that’s the funny bit, Youri does seem to fit a deeper-lying role, in the end. Hoping Buendia can do a lot of what Emery wanted Asensio for, and then maybe it’s Onana next to Youri with Kamara playing deeper more often. But obvs Onana needs to get over these recurring niggles. Not encouraging he’s out again already, but at least there’s a break.

Yeah I guess we’ll see in a week exactly what Unai wants to do with them all but it’ll make it much easier if the usual suspects stop getting injuries. To my mind, from the brilliant team that played PSG, we’ve swapped:
        Asensio with Emi B
        Rashford with Guessand
        Bailey with Sancho
        Ramsey with Elliot

I think that is a mix of downgrades and upgrades.

Not impressed with England, yet again. Sure they have 12 points from 4 games but those 4 games were against opposition of extremely limited attacking nous. Tuchel is complaining about the lack of atmosphere generated by the VP crowd. He should count his blessings, at least the pitch didn’t become a landing strip for paper aeroplanes. I’m complaining that we kept getting caught offside, Kane is a shadow of years gone by, lack of any idea how to break down a low block and watching the most turgid sideways passing all evening.

Plug…obvs it’s now a ‘low block’ vs ‘park the bus’, but still the same thing and I’ll submit it’s hard to break down if for no other reason than there are just so many damn bodies in the way. Tried and true and I’d employ it, too, if I weren’t wanting to be torn to shreds, but it does make for very frustrating and boring matches. Only answers that readily come to mind are set pieces, individual effort (aka ‘moment of magic’), or getting it downfield quickly when they do come out. All obvious stuff. I guess the sideways passing could be quicker, but the defenders don’t really have to move around much anyway.

Working slick triangles down each flank or even in the middle can prize open limited spaces. Not something I see many teams deploying. Most seem to have players just standing around by their markers making a cone of themselves.

Better from England last night. The Villa boys did OK. Rogers and Ollie with assists and Konsa with a goal. In Konsa’s case, I noted he was in possession more than once when Madueke made his dart forward behind the defence only for him to make the sideways pass. Guess ingrained habits die hard. To be fair though, others did the same when faced with the same option. Seems Ned is copping some flak for the Kane goal. I don’t think he was marking him at the corner, Ned’s man was just outside the box. Nobody picked up Kane when he ambled (all he can do these days) into space and the ball was dropped on his brow. Rogers reputation suffered no harm, with such form the Madrid’s of this world will sadly come knocking.

The old school plan was to weather the storm for 20 minutes then have a go. Emery has changed all that. We now weather the storm for 35 minutes then start coming out. Slight signs that Eveton are losing concentration and Villa are sharpening up – but that’s all due to Buendia being quite bright and sparkly.

I didn’t expect any of the deadline day guys to play, but that’s another 11 that is set up to be defensive. 2 ball carriers, if you count Ollie. Not sure what McGinn’s role is defensively or offensively. I’m a bit lost for words but happy enough with 0-0 at half time. Everton have hardly been brilliant. Just hoping for a mildly interesting attack from Villa in the second 45.

Guessand needs to get up to speed with the EPL. Things happen fast in this league and time is limited. But Bogey did OK and the defence in general looked solid even if they had a bit of luck at times. Offensively, not a lot to get excited about.

Apologies for the lack of updates…had a death in the family and then a grandchild’s 1st birthday, so a bit all over the place.

Didn’t get to see the match, but was disappointed by the absence of any number greater than zero on our side of the scoreline.

Well it doesn’t feel too much better 24 hours later…

Hopefully with 2 games this week Emery can quickly sift through the squad and find his first choice team. Having said that, it would help if our midfielders weren’t made of cardboard.

It looks slow and unmotivated atm. The most logical reason I can think of sounds like tin hat stuff. But it’s as if they’ve already been told their final league position and the results don’t matter.

Bizot Rowe lindorf mings torres matasen bogarde guissand elliot sancho and malen

JV, it will be interesting to see team selection for the Carabao. Unai has a chance to start Malen, Sancho and Elliott but the engine room in the middle looks threadbare of options with our injury status.

    Team news from Brentford:

Bizot, Cash, Konsa, Maatsen, Bogarde, Elliott, McGinn, Malen, Sancho, Guessand

Subs: Proctor, Mings, Buendia, Watkins, Digne, Jimoh, Rogers, Kamara, Borland.

Interesting. No Pau or Lindelöf. Kamara back on the bench.

Guessand, Sancho and Malen are poor tonight. They seem to have gone AWOL. As you say 656, at least Elliott was there to punish the mistake. The away support were in full voice at the start but the lack of inertia in our play has managed to silence them. Sense of humour started up with the chant “we’ve scored a goal”.

Sancho should have scored when he hit the post. Had he done so, it would have been a different game. Emery needs a reset and start training them how to move the ball forward without having a nose bleed. We now need some wins before the crowd turns.

Yeah, nothing clicking. At least Rogers looked like he’d become reacquainted with a football after a couple poor touches.

Sancho post, Cash not squaring to Ollie. At least one peno. Clutching at straws, maybe, but these are what turnarounds require, and 1-1 at Brentford isn’t like going out against Stevenage. Penos were poor, yes, and Bizot is no Martinez in a shootout. Did alright otherwise.

For me, sure, Emery’s style and tactics are what they are. Players not executing (how many long passes found targets vs Brentford’s) still seems to stand out to me. A step slow to challenge, no real gusto when they are there. Hesitating then telegraphing passes.

Seems to me like Emery needs to get them to lighten up, play freely.

It’s hard not to question everything, because how do you go from 6th place to this in one summer? The vibes are just off. It’s so flat.

Also, I second the motion to burn that black kit. I’d rather see Lambert’s limes :-S

Vibes are definitely off, and that’s hard to explain from the outside. Could do a lot of ‘maybe it’s this or that…’, but I honestly don’t know. We were playing fine in the preseason, with that being what it is. But we’ve seen good teams have poor starts elsewhere and then things fall into place.

Yep, I’d echo John’s comment that we looked reasonable in pre season but since the start we’ve had 5 extremely poor performances. And they’ve followed a similar pattern not to mention outcomes. Tyro has mentioned we don’t know the half of it and indeed we don’t. But something has changed.

Looking at recruitment, I think Maatsen has energy and mobility. He was expensive but his pace is up to EPL standards. Malen is a different matter. He should be getting up to speed now after 6 months under Unai but I have yet to see any benefit. He has a cracking shot on him but each time I see him he looks slow and display’s a lack of effort (at least that’s how he comes across). Is he being played in his best position, in his best system or is he a poor purchase? Then there’s Guessand. He’s definitely got the physical presence, but as yet looks slow and lost. He cost a lot of money so needs to be a success. Room for much improvement from this guy.

It’s Sancho I’m most worried about. Chelsea paid a fine to back out of purchasing him. Why do we think he’ll do any better with us? We do need a fast tricky winger but is it him? Maybe his understanding with Maatsen from Dortmund days will reappear.

I’d like to see us play forward far more than we do at present. Look for a forward pass rather than taking the safe backwards option each time. The players have become engrained with its application to the point that we could have the most prolific striker up front but negate his game entirely.

Malen is defo a mystery. Guessand, think we’ll have to give him time. Sancho? A Rashford-type punt when you can’t afford to buy better. We’ve seen heat maps and all the rest showing these players have played in different spots, and we hear Emery values versatility. So, I dunno. They’ve all been relative ‘bargains’ by PL standards, and maybe we’re seeing why.
