Back to Winning Ways & Another Nemesis Awaits

Villa rebounded nicely following the somewhat disappointing return fixture with Arsenal. Forest didn’t present too many problems beyond the “breaking down a low block” issue that stymies many a side. I sort of miss the “parking the bus” days, but I suppose we have to make room for analytical progress.

One thing I did stumble across from someone noteworthy is the acknowledgment that it really often is a moment of individual magic that’s required to prise open those kinds of set-ups. And we got one via Ollie, whose return to form either signals a desire to move in January or that he’s simply got his head and feet sorted. I jest. Sort of. Maybe it was Rogers stealing his thunder or his knee just feels better.

Regardless, Ollie got the breakthrough, Forest then had to open up, and Super John McGinn recorded his first Premier League brace to make sure of all the points. And I do appreciate the observers who note that despite the goalkeeping gaffe, it was still a quality finish to curl the shot inside the post. I also appreciate SJM’s ever-present honesty in admitting that Emery was telling him he needed to get in there and start scoring. He obviously took it on board.

With all the other results basically going our way, it was a good weekend. Twenty down, 18 to go, and a somewhat improbable 11-point gap to fifth. Still hard to believe we’re eight better than pool to this point, or that we’ve notched three more victories.

In short, it’s been a very good run, especially since it contained wins over Arsenal, United, Chelsea, and City. Serve held. The returns? We end up breaking even at best. So it’s all the other games that count. Like the upcoming visit to Selhurst Park.

While we’re used to United being in our heads and Chelsea now pressing us to the limit, Palace have become a real thorn as well. Content to defend and break at speed, they’ve succeeded in setting us back, not least in last year’s FA Cup semi. 3-0 seems to be their favored scoreline.

Like certain other approaches, it’s the match-ups that kill us, namely the aforementioned speed. We get pulled up, they knock it downfield (with quality, to be sure), and we can’t prevent clean, easy looks on goal. So, I’m hoping we’ve seen enough of that.

A big part of that success, though, comes down our lack of bite in midfield. In many of our recent matches we see the opponent really closing on whoever is receiving the ball centrally facing our goal. It often results in a foul, other times a turnover. Sometimes we turn, but the idea is to leave no room or opportunity to turn. If you don’t get the ball, take the foul. It stops our central progression. And without real wingers to ping it out to, it’s effective. We don’t really do that, which facilitates those passes to run on to.

I’d like to think there’s a better answer from us either way, but we’ve yet to see it consistently. Villa obviously have more than one liability, but that’s a big one—a nasty, quick, committed midfielder that gets there when the ball does.

Beyond that, probably the biggest influence on this particular meeting will be absences. We’ll be without Onana, again, which is becoming really frustrating. Beyond that, the usual in Mings and Torres, Barkley, too. Guessand is still in Africa, which isn’t as big a miss as Sarr for Palace. Palace’s injury list still isn’t clear.

Then we have the possible effects of Glasner being on short-lists and Palace open to Guehi moving on. It could be an unsettled side. But we also know Guehi’s looming move in the summer didn’t affect him at all, and Palace won’t roll over. They also come in on a poor run of form, and we all know how that often works out for us.

An intriguing match, in the end, and another hump we have to get over. Be nice to get three points, and close out this stretch strongly before returning to Europa nights. It only gets harder from here and the longer we can keep Liverpool and Chelsea at arm’s length the better. Villa have done all they can to position themselves for the second half and now we wait to see whether they can maintain the required pace.

Over to you.

A first half straight out of the Unai playing manual. Maintaining control and staying in shape. The second half may be a bit more dynamic if Glasner tells his team to attack more.

Satisfied for now. It’s a shame Ollie didn’t take the first one around the GK or get a shot off earlier for his second chance.

Their fans have been complaining of an energy drop-off in the final half hour…I wouldn’t say either team put a massive amount of effort into the first 45, but our bench is definitely stronger.

I’d still say a point wouldn’t be the worst result.

Well I suppose palace haven’t been able to do their usual number on us and we have weaved more pretty patterns than usual. We have done nothing stupid (for a change) so have a good platform to marmalise them in the second half.

Lot of fuss about Guehi (who seems to be a Konsa blood brother) but I always notice their number 5, La Croix. Seems to be one of those angular, wirey raw boned stopper defenders à la Allan Evans, Olof Mellberg or even Chris Nicholl.

Point gained in my book. Palace had the better chances after HT and we could have lost. Thought our midfield struggled against the opposition movement in triangles using first touch passing. WTF is the matter with Emi? Another HT substitution.

Results elsewhere elevate this point from reasonable to good. Saw signs of the players being mentally jaded. Presumably they weren’t saving themselves for the FA Cup on Saturday.

Not inspired to pick a POTM but really liked a wrong foot cross from Cash that led to our closest chance.

Good luck to all the FA Cup lovers – hope you get what you want. I just want the Prem – dont even care about the Eurocrap cups except they make money to contribute to winning the league.

Happy enough with the point, it keeps the scoreboard ticking. They were definitely there for the taking but I think we were more concerned with not coughing up any turnovers.

I think Onana has been our best player during this mega run, after Rogers ofc. And we neither Bouba currently or Youri generally, really has his dynamism – and neither McGinn Sancho or Buendia were able to provide any.

So all in all, not a bad result, especially given the other results.

I guess a few will have a nice rest now…great if Torres Mings and Guessand are back before the next PL game too. I’m not bothered at all about FA cup…ask me in March, if we’re still in it vs Aldershot

Agree…Onana really is important for just what you point out. Definitely better when he can complement Kamara and let Youri be more creative. Emery made the switch late on, but I wonder how far Bogarde is from being able to slot in there instead of pulling Youri back. He has looked more assured, has a bit of pace, etc.

That does seem to be the role Lamar is most trying to emulate. I’d also love to see Hemmings get 60 minutes. He was our best ‘prospect’ in pre-season but has been, understandably, protected. He looks like he could be a bit of a mix of Bouba and Youri in terms of confidence to have the ball under pressure

Things are looking good. We’re in a great position in the league. Still 17 games to go but we’re finished with the Arse and our nemesis Palace. Reflecting on last night, referee Madley missed a couple of crucial calls but overall I thought he was reasonable. The same can’t be said of Michael Oliver though in the VAR chair. He ignored some blatant fouls in the area from Palace and unsurprisingly drew comments from Damian Vidagany about it. Those comments may come back to bite him as the EPL loves any opportunity to cane those outside the entitled six.

With respect to the performance, I’m still of the opinion that we haven’t solved our need for a pacey and difficult winger. Whether Alysson is that guy or not won’t be apparent to the fans until maybe the end of this month. Don’t think Sancho is the answer, I’ve been disappointed by him. Same with Guessand. Rashford temporarily filled the need this time last year and before him Bailey in his flying year. So the void remains for me.

Henry….”not bothered at all about FA cup…ask me in March, if we’re still in it vs Aldershot”. Haha. I just know for certain if we get past Spurs at the weekend, we’ll get Citeh or red scouse in the next round!!

Agree with this, too, Plug. We just don’t have a second wide player who can consistently beat a man, twist a fullback, or just leave people in the dust, etc. Might not be Emery’s ‘system’, having a pure winger, but seems like we’ve tried and failed with Bailey and now Guessand.

Definitely agree with this. We are one more properly consistent dynamic player (CM, No 10 or winger) away from being a constant CL quality squad. At the moment it’s left to Rogers, Onana or McGinn to provide the thrust – and the legs have to be managed before they pop. We can’t expect them to bust a gut for 90 minutes, every single game.

It has been an attribute of Frank’s teams to go in heavy on tackles. In the first half that never happened and we controlled the game. At HT he obviously read them the riot act and they came out filthy. It’s his MO.

But cup games don’t matter when it comes to performance, it’s all above getting into the next round draw. Job done. And AS ALWAYS, it really resonates with us Brummies when we’ve dispatched any of the Laandaan entitled six. GET IN. Bar’s open.

I get being ‘aggressive’, I get fighting, all that. But it’s not the ‘70s anymore, players are worth a fortune, and there’s a line between scrapping and being reckless. They crossed it…and sure, it created turnovers, but very poor and Pawson needs to be called out. I don’t care what minute the Kamara foul happened in. That’s a yellow all day and it changes the match.

So, very pleased to knock them out, Frank’s lost whatever respect I had for him, and I hope Kamara’s okay.

Rogers lost the ball in dangerous areas more than once John. It’s something his coaches can work on. Maatsen had a good game, looked like he had so much time and was comfortable in possession. Nice to see Pau back but Lindelof has done nothing wrong to be rested. And Emi, of course with 1 goal and 1 assist. Tyro back on the bench so he’s not far off either.

“Unlikely to win their duels against a snarling Villa side on the best of days, Spurs did not even try. Unai Emery’s men, meanwhile, looked in the mood and did not need an invitation to stomp all over their hosts. When Villa opened the scoring, Boubacar Kamara had already been substituted after landing awkwardly on his ankle.”

FFS. What game was this geezer watching? Palhinha wiped out Bouba an inch below both knees after just 4 minutes. They can’t take it when a Laandaan entitled club gets schooled.

Get real people. We did NOT win today. spurs lost because they couldn’t get going in the first half.

Just finished watching the recorded match. The major sub plot was the paulhino prat getting away with malicious fouls all game. I just wish we had an enforcer who could dish out some rough justice on the pitch. Late in the game I saw Ollie shove the dildo over w/o causing any pain. Saw Tman’s getting in his face a couple of times but again no damage. The most interesting bit was the clip of Ollie celebrating at the end of the game and totally ignoring prickho trying to nuzzle the back of his head BUT then Bogarde and Rogers came steaming in and wanting a piece. I got the impression Rogers could have done some damage and prickho knew it. Hope Bogarde can channel whatever that was and become that unexpected enforcer that I want.

I know that it should be all about the game but that was all I got out of the game.

As fans, we watch a game and have just our eyes to see what is happening on the pitch in front of us. We form views of who has had a good game, who has been average and who has been poor. What we don’t have access to is the amount of data collected during a game by the coaching staff. So much is available via Opta Stats but much more is collected by the in house coaches. Discrepancies often occur between what the fans think and what the coaches think. We can witness a stonking game (Manure 3-1, Unai’s first Villa game), only for the coaches to determine the performance as sub standard. Equally, we can say so and so had a quiet game but the coaching staff thinks he had superb numbers as demanded. All based on their collected stats.

The most important stat, goals scored and conceded during a game is the one that matters. All the others contribute towards that one. Since the home defeat against Palace in August, Villa have 8 home wins on the spin in the EPL, 11 home wins on the spin if we include the Europa League. Fortress VP indeed.

It can be hard to see through a manager’s eyes. I mean, it’s easy when someone’s playing great, but those slippery situations like Bailey, Guessand, and now Malen that are tough. You’ve got training, stats, video, instructions, not always obvious what’s considered a satisfactory contribution. Buendia probably falls in there too. Lots of obviously good things he does, but when he has quieter games, what’s Emery’s real takeaway?

So Gallagher chooses Spurs over Villa. A shame because he would flourish in our system. But he’s probably right that he’ll get more starts at Spurs. And I suspect that they can offer a higher salary.

It’s kind of sad that a mediocre side such as Spurs can spend 40m and 150k/wk for 5 years to get a fill-in for a two-month injury. I wonder if Gallagher will be regretting his decision a year from now when Spurs are out of Europe, Villa are in the UCL, and the pre-exiting Spurs midfield is healthy.
