It was scrappy and nervy, but Villa finally got the season’s first win under their belts in the Europa League opener against visiting Bologna. Obviously important for a number of reasons, not least because this competition may prove as important as the league this season.
The game’s lone goal was emblematic of Villa’s struggles so far. A short corner routine that sees Emi Buendia putting it on a plate for Morgan Rogers who whiffed epically. However, the ball found its way to John McGinn, who fortunately found the composure to control and tuck it low into the corner through traffic. It was about the only real moment of composure Villa would muster in front of goal and highlighted how badly Rogers is struggling to find himself.
A small spell of dominance followed, but Villa couldn’t find the second. Bologna regained their footing and from there Villa were often outplayed in the middle of the park. When Ollie Watkins won a penalty after his introduction, it looked like Villa might get that cushion, but in another emblematic moment, a shot straight down the middle found the keeper’s legs and it was nail-biting stuff til the final whistle, with Bologna rattling the crossbar and Bizot needing to make a fine save in the dying seconds.
Not really sure where Villa’s heads would be today if he hadn’t kept that out, but it wouldn’t be good.
Should We Feel Better?
Dunno. In the big picture, we know the team is better than the performances so far. We know things should improve. But everyone’s still at a loss to figure out why we’ve been so poor. Explanations have covered just about every possibility. Finally getting over the line is obviously a big step forward, so yeah, there’s that. “Relief,” if nothing else.
And naturally it should help ease mental pressure, though I imagine Fulham will be more difficult than Bologna. If Villa don’t show signs of progression the pressure will likely be right back on them.
When it comes to the performance itself, it was still that puzzling thing where the team just seem out of sync, and where it looks okay-ish then it doesn’t. Yes, the are new additions, but core players who know each other shouldn’t have so much trouble finding each other, holding onto the ball, or bringing it under control.
Villa did have the right ideas going forward, playing quickly in transition like we’ve seen in our better runs—even if they couldn’t execute. There was more fight and less lethargy, and it was heartening to hear from Konsa that the players didn’t feel Emery’s criticism was unfair. The deeper dives I’ve read relying on sources with more access to those “near the players” seem to bear this out if they’re to be believed.
And likewise, they point to a funk caused by whatever confluence of factors over the summer rather than some of the more detailed criticisms of selections and tactics. Nothing’s going to work if Rogers suddenly looks like he’s never seen a football before. The question is why does Rogers suddenly look like he’s never seen a football before.
Selections
Getting into these weeds, I didn’t have a problem with what Emery put out there. Guessand needs to play. Malen needs to play. Maatsen needs to play. That’s like £70m–£80m right there.
Should Watkins have started? Should Elliott have at least gotten a run-out if not a start? Dunno.
Ollie seems a complicated situation. From all accounts he probably had his head turned in January. All looked fine on the surface, but then Emery started playing Rashford instead, and Ollie wasn’t getting the CL starts he would’ve craved. To start this European campaign, Malen got the nod. Is it form, or is a strong message being sent? Is it simply because Villa need a second striker and they know Ollie wants to go? Ollie looked good over the summer, so I don’t think it’s form. And I think Ollie would already be gone if Arsenal weren’t continually taking the piss.
Elliott’s another £35m commitment and many were demanding he start. But McGinn and Buendia were chosen, and it was Bravearse who got the goal and brought that physical commitment. I understand the frustration some feel about Buendia, he’s always been a bit polarizing. But he did play some good balls, always looks to keep it moving, tracks back and works hard. If you want quick play, he’s the right idea, though it’s not always going to come off. For me, he’s the moneyball version of Asensio. You get a higher work-rate and about 85-90% of the quality.
Tactics
Again, lots of questions being asked here. Managers live and die by their systems and adaptability. Persistence can be necessary or foolish. One man’s stubbornness can be another’s vindication. Whether by accident or design, Emery doesn’t have the right kind of squad to play the high-pressing, fast-counter styles gaining popularity. Me, I think both the money available and Emery’s stylistic preferences are decisive here.
Like many before him, Emery prefers to play more narrow at the back and has come to rely on the double pivot to protect the CBs and deny the middle. He’ll accept crosses as the price and put his faith on the CBs dealing with them. Kamara is smart and combative but not fast. Tielemans, when available, well, he’s our best player, but not fast. McGinn, combative and a leader, but not fast (whether he’s playing well or not). Bogarde? Looks good enough one minute and lost the next, probably faster than the first three, but doesn’t matter if you’re so up and down. Onana? Long strides and physical, but only patchy availability. Barkley? Really unavailable, though he has quality. Not particularly fast, but okay.
That dictates a lot. Buendia isn’t fast either, but is usually deployed further up like Asensio would be, and he’s not fast either. So, you’re looking to Malen, Guessand, Rogers, and Maatsen for pace among the permanent players (Ollie’s fast enough, too, obviously), but none so far has shown the breakaway pace of some others who terrify on the counter. Sancho is quick, but I’m not sure he’s blazing fast in open ground. Haven’t seen enough of him.
This all dictates a certain conservative approach. Emery knows Villa are vulnerable to quick counters and for whatever reason, our offside trap hasn’t been nearly as effective as it was to start. Last night was a rare flashback. The trick for Villa, as McGinn pointed out after the game, is the quality of the balls and decisions in the forward moves, which are often through the middle. When that breaks down, as it has since the season began, Villa struggle.
What makes that so difficult to overcome is that we don’t have players with consistent long-ball quality apart from Youri. Emery wants Villa to break through and have others join in in sweeping moves. Rogers carrying is one way. Youri passing through, another. Then there’s Ollie holding up or chasing down longer (usually speculative) balls and bringing those others into play. We try to use the flanks, too, of course, but more often it’s the fullback rather than a traditional winger.
The kinds of goals Malen has scored (and Bailey, when he was here) are what Emery’s looking for. He likes an overload to one side, and for Villa to find the space that creates, or he wants quick sequences up the middle. And he wants players to be very fluid. That’s probably the hardest part of his demands. You can look at a lineup, or where players end up in shape without the ball, but you’ll often struggle to define certain players’ positions during a lot of sequences.
Obviously there’s lots more and I’m sure that’ll get brought up, but to my eye, those are the basics.
Takeaway
You’ve got patience if you’re still reading. As I’ve probably said too often, I think Emery has gotten just about the most out of the side that he can: Villa have been punching above their weight. Sustaining that is hard. Everyone has to be at or near their best almost all the time.
The frustrations we’ve heard, like Konsa talking about PSR, seem to indicate the players know this and that at least some of them wanted reinforcements, know we need more quality. And what I wonder is whether what we’re seeing is down to the players having climbed the mountain and being unsure they have it in them again. That’s what ‘feeling sorry for themselves’ really comes down to.
And naturally it leaves some like Ollie, Rogers, and Martinez probably wishing that moves had come off. Big deals, less individual pressure, more glory. Ollie and Emi it makes sense in terms of age. Rogers, well…who knows, he’s young.
Is it fixable? Again, I don’t know. They’ll just have to settle into the grind and find those gears again. Maybe Sancho and Elliott help freshen the mix. Maybe Guessand settles and becomes a factor. Getting Tielemans and Onana back obviously will help. Barkley wouldn’t hurt either, better than bringing on Bogarde to shore things up. Rogers should improve as he probably really can’t play any worse, and I’m only pointing him out so much because he’s so critical to the balance and we know he has a lot more in his locker. I for one don’t want to be pointing out anything but his quality.
Over to you.
Villa Turn to Europe for First Win

Excellent piece, John. I’ve a feeling Villa will do OK and beat Fulham, 2-0 or 2-1, and then the tide will turn – so, look out, Burnley!
Your lips to god’s ears, Viva.
A very accurate set of comments John. You’ve highlighted our lack of extreme pace which hinders us in the EPL where everything is rapid. In. Europe, teams operate at slower pace so we have more opportunities to assert our quality. The core of the team is a year older so we expect their pace to wane. Not something that can be rectified in a single transfer window. Maybe Sancho will help.
Don’t share Viva’s belief against Fulham. I fear the worst but hope I’m well wrong.
Yeah, can’t say I’m looking forward to Fulham either, Plug. And even though we’ve not even looked like Sunday league champions, might well be the case that winning the Europa league is what we need to do this year.
The problem with such a comprehensive piece is that anything else left to say would just be wittering.
Wittering on, our success over the last few seasons just goes to show how good the recruitment was over the Dean Smith years. Obviously they have ALL peaked but we don’t seem to have any home grown players come through to drip feed into the team. The only players that have been obtained after the DS years are Rogers (basically what JJ should have become), T’mans (who is probably at his peak and about to go over), Kamara ( who is the dog’s bollox but injury prone) and Digne ( who can’t go on forever). None of the other recently obtained players seem to be trusted
I get the feeling that our present recruitment team dont think British players are any good and that continental players are the way to go. I also get the feeling that Emery has only got the one plan that we are presently seeing right now. My conclusion is that Emery has got to rebuild with younger more intellectually maleable players to carry out his plan. That obviously will take time, will be frustrating and will Emery have the patience?
I will now admit that I am a football dinosaur. I obviously like seeing Villa winning and being at the top of the table but I just don’t like Emery ball. I hated the Guardiola inspired Barcelona tiki taka football and now the oil money inspired shitty version. To me it was sterile, robotic, calculating and boring. If that was on show when I saw my first Villa game in December 1966, I wouldn’t be here now wittering on and boring everybody.
I’ll admit my favorite passages are the 3-4 pass moves. Who knows, maybe we see more of those if Malen and Guessand find their feet. I’m assuming Rogers will get himself sorted. I liked Emery’s comments about leaving him out there to play through it, addressing it head on. Konsa was honest, too.
Funny, isn’t it, how much flak Deano took at times, yet look at the squad.
I’ve also wondered about Emery’s patience given the constraints. Really hard to make over an entire team and stay in the running for Europe.
Strange day today, strange scores, was it 8 injury time goals, potter sacked ex forest spurs wolves manager appointed
And then the golf unreal entertainment
Another strange side, dare I say Bruce’s bingo ball type
Martinez cash mings konsa digne bogarde mcginn rogers guissand elliot and watkins
Bogarde in for kamara
Mings in torres
Digne in for matasen
Watkins in for malen
Elliot in for beundi
Wot a good start – NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a bunch of wooss we are, cowards all hiding
Bugger! Why couldn’t Jiminez get injured before he scored? By the way, where was the man on the far post for that corner?
20mins of garbage, only elliot looks lup for it
Our defence had a good line look about on Thursday, yet all changes and we are a shambles
Are fulham real Madrid in disguise
Ollie breaks his duck, just waiting on var to give it
It’s a goal phew
Phew…get in, Ollie.
Wotta good Ollie goal. Route one ball up the field and Ollie instinctively waving his foot at the ball. Really good job that he didn’t have time to think.
Yeah, it’s good when it’s like that.
Not a vintage performance so far, but we are starting to look more like ourselves.
Ollie doing what he does best, scoring without overthinking anything. Saw a few hints of robust no messing about by Torres – but he isn’t exactly up against a bully boy forward. Nothing happening for Rogers. Elliott just not in the game. Will Emery persist with him?
Villa much less terrible than they have been in previous games this season.
I think you persist for a bit, jbd. Elliott’s been lively if not overly involved, Guessand and Bogarde (who does to look to have good enough pace) have been combative.
Can obvs see Sancho and/or Malen coming on at some point depending how the next 15mins go. Does he hook Rogers then, or does Elliott make way?
I’d just like Rogers to score, would probs do wonders for him.
Beundi coming on ,elliot off emery are you mad
well, jbd was right, shows what I know.
Yeah but you are probably much younger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wotta stonker from SJM. My feed is 3 minutes delayed but it’s a good picture.
Bloody hell. Sharp stuff from Buendia.
So happy with the goals I forgot to react.
Thank god for that…viva’s optimism was well founded. Season might’ve started now.
Thank you, John – was even better than I anticipated!
Think it was the fact you had us scoring twice that made me nervous. But three, well, no problem.
In the words of Mick MaCarthy, that’s a monkey off our backs. Mustn’t get too carried away though because Fulham are the archetypal southern softies.
A moment of instinctual genius from Ollie turned the match for us but my POTM is Buendia. I am a Buendia fanboy. I like his sharp scrapping ratting style and his quick movement of the ball. His first 10/15 minutes woke us up and inspired us. I reckon he gave Rogers confidence by showing what could be done even though he is slower and half the size.
Other takeaways, Guessand provided some much needed physical presence on the right wing and Bogarde gave a solid reassuring performance in midfield.
Harvey Elliott. Mmm! I know he has class because I saw his performance in the U21 (?) Euro final but right now he looks homesick for that well known north london suberb called liverpool.
Agreed on all counts, jbd
It occurs to me that their Emile Smith-Rowe could have been part of the Dean Smith revolution. Deano seemed to rate him and appeared to really want him, but that southern softy didn’t want to leave homieland london and has now achieved his ambition of being a Fulham reserve. Bullet dodged Deano!
The last hour marked the first re-appearance of the “Good Villa” since preseason. And a good chance to build momentum before the break with a winnable game at Feyenord in a stadium that will bring back good memories for older Villa fans, followed by a home game against a promoted side that are not pulling up trees. Two more wins and we are mid-table and off to a great start in Europe.
Yeah….could look a lot brighter suddenly.
Just a note on Buendia…in the right place to pick up the loose ball, simple perfectly weighted pass to invite SJM onto it and into space. Then his goal, right place again, quick reaction and goal.
Seven minutes, game over. Not all down to him, but he does get us playing quicker, and teamed up well with Guessand off the ball.
Finally a win scored more than 1 goal, but my glass half full temperament says we were lucky
Ref should have give fulham 1 pen ,konsa clearance of line,we didn’t really test Leno
Torres made a big difference coming on,,mings was over the place,I thought elliot tried hard in first half and definitely don’t agree with majority on here on beundi his first 5mins his first 2 touches gave ball away,3rd his pass to cash was lost,4th touch nice assist to mcginn,5th he scored from our 1st cross into box, don’t recall much after
Roll on Thursday european night again hopefully keep run going
Been on the road and missed the last 3 games plus Monchi’s departure. The Fulham result was much needed. I must confess I did not share Viva’s optimism with this game and thought Fulham would roll us over. So delighted he was right and I was wrong. Three goals will always send the fans home happy so this one mattered. Next up Feyenoord. Bring them on!!
Have now seen the match highlights and Yes, Fulham might have had a penalty. He was going down before contact with Emi so looking for it. But I’ve seen them given so many times, and it is cheating. They all do it, makes life hard for the officials. VAR was Bramall of infamy at Old Trafford. The Cash penalty shout, no way. His arm was exactly where you’d expect it to be when lunging to try and block a shot. Not deliberate at all. Or these days I should say Cash’s arm was in a natural position for the circumstance concerned.
Great to see Ollie break his goal drought. Think more will follow now. We badly need Rogers to break his also and things will really start looking up. After this game, I’m a happy bunny.
Hopefully back to back wins brings some confidence and some of the weight and indecision leaves their bodies.
Comprehensive summary and detail already coved in the leader and comments, as per.
Have to say, I switched on literally as Jimenez celebrated and the following 30 minutes were just as slow and aimless as before. I thought we looked better in attack last Thursday, and we saw a bit more in the 2nd half against Fulham. Again, I wasn’t overly impressed with Fulham or Bologna, but seeing Liverpool struggle against Palace has me thinking that quality isn’t high anywhere at the moment.
Hopefully it continues to get incrementally better in the two low quality oppo games before the international break. Because if nothing else it helps to not have to waste time entertaining “Will Villa be relegated” chat.
As written above, it is not a good look that Elliot and Sancho don’t appear to have a solid place in the first 11, as another Deano signing reintroduces himself…is Dendonker still our player?!?
Seems like there’s just a lot less dividing teams now. A lot of wealthy owners, just PSR holding back a number of clubs. When you see the money being spent and then the product, it’s often only marginal gains, if any, that many of these expensive buys bring to an already strong side.
Yeah, this hybrid of Stoke/Bolton style tactics really seems to have boiled league matches into a bland soup. We really need our new signings to fit straight in to the matchday squad.
Also, I find it confusing that they do seem to be a “good” group of honest players, but lose their soul over a summer. You’d be hard pressed to call any of them arseholes…
Thinking back to Dean and Gerrard’s sacking, the players didn’t stop running for the managers, even though the writing appeared to be on the wall for both managers.
Yet they seem to lack the steel or competitive spirit. Even the last two seasons, we usually get pumped a few times because we’ve just wilted against a team was really up for it on that day.
We’ve never really had any nasty, hard players other than Hutton in recent memory. Could use a bit of that. And we also seem not to have recruited for physicality. Seems like everyone we play has players right up into us, but we’ve got a squad who seem to prefer playing off.
Ooh goodie. Can I have Tarkowski please?
I’d take Tarkowski just because I think he would get into the players. You just get the sense that none of them are really causing friction by getting in someone’s face and demanding more. You see moaning and being upset, but I don’t see any demanding more of each other, then giving a consequence if there isn’t an improvement. Emery by all accounts doesn’t have a personal relationship with players, it’s completely tactical. He’s said he doesn’t want emotion. I think it’s inevitable that emotion comes into it, good and bad emotions, and it’s low hanging fruit to harness it for a few extra points.
On this ground tonight, our greatest achievement unfolded. It’s going to be a tough game. If we are at it, there is no reason why we can’t collect a result. Feyenoord got off to a flyer at the start of the season but more recently have found goals harder to come by. Despite that, they are 3 points clear at the top of the Eredivisie after 7 games. COYVB.
At first I was like, oh this will be a formality. Then I read up on their form and last season’s CL. Tough game indeed. I’d like to think the occasion/atmosphere will prompt a performance.
Feyenoord’s top scorer this season by a distance is Ayase Ueda, a Japanese international. Service to this guy needs disrupting.
Good job they didn’t go down to 10 men. They would really be kicking our arse instead of just kicking our arse. Good job we’ve got the second best goalie in the world saving our bare arse from those rampant Dutchmen.
Interesting half, good and bad from Villa, but overall I’m pleased with the ideas in the forward thrust even if it hasn’t come off.
Suppose you have the potential/probable red card versus the disallowed goal to even things out as far as controversy goes.
Rogers defo getting better, but still not in full flow. Could probably do with a few more shots from further out, maybe overplaying and trying to walk it in.
Thought on the ‘forward thrust’…more aggressive/positive than our camp-out mode, but does lead to more turnovers.
Get in, Emi.
My fave and our sharpest player on the pitch scores a sharply taken goal. I wish our other players on the pitch could be just as SHARP!
The Argentinian Asensio
Bogie for Buendia? Are we closing shop? Still not happening for Ollie.
Beautiful. Thought Malen had blown it, but it was a great turn and positive run. Drew three players.
Bizot’s had a good night.
Just a routine goal from the SJM goal machine. Malen did more in that run than Ollie did all game.
Bizot my POTM ‘cos he kept us in the game until the Argie Asensio got our mojo working in SHARP order. Bogarde was reassuring. Guessand gives us some much needed weight and size up front. Rogers starting to get going. Also seems to have the JJ narky temper. A gratifying win so I pronounce myself gratified.
Bogarde did look composed. Though I did think Morgan was loafing a bit, second half. But still an improvement.
Three on the trot, six pts in Europe, Ollie and Morgan still not at their best. Decent response.
Also an interesting game in that once again, you see a pressing team wear themselves out. Not clinical with what that got them, and they paid for it. Thought we showed some different patterns, ideas in playing it out, and the pace in countering was refreshing.
Comments above noted and I’m in general agreement. Thought we got lucky with their disallowed goal in the first half. Nothing wrong with it in my view. The guy who brought down Ollie should have got a red card but as 656 says, it was almost a relief the ref stood by his original decision given our record against 10 men.
So it was a really sluggish first half from us. Had me worried big time. But they ran out of steam and we came into the game. Great goal from Emi, top quality. SJM applied the coup de grace after the ball broke from Malen. Bizot was magnificent. Good games from Konsa, SJM, Kamara, Maatsen and of course Emi. Thought Rogers and Guessand laboured somewhat. Cash and Pau, solid enough.
This was a big win. Delighted with the result. In the end, the opposition was well and truly wrecked. Bogey looked very comfortable when he entered the fray. Six points in the bag. Maybe another 3 wins and draw for the last 16 knock outs.
There was some strange refereeing decisions throughout. Players falling over when another player was in close proximity worked every time for a free kick. Great to hear the away support in full voice once the home crowd had been silenced.
Yeah although he generally allowed the game to flow, there were more wrong key decisions than right ones. I thought Guessand should’ve had a penalty too.
On a side note, why is it usually our players on the floor? It’d be nice if they tried to “put it on the opponent” every now and then. Who had Rogers’ back when their number 10 got him booked? They need to be more proactive
Headline: Another 3 points. Points mean prizes.
Who had McGinn as top scorer this season?
Rogers, not quite back but much better. Watkins on the other hand looks all at sea. Since last year he’s lost his power, preseason made it look as tho he’s got his mojo back but alas…he was invisible. Malen is no striker but at least he made them think about the threat in behind.
Bizot is ten times better than Olsen.
And it was nice to see a bit more attacking play in the first 20 minutes. Another baby step back to confidence.
Their goal should have stood and their striker had a guilt edged chance at 0-0, as well as all of the pinball in our area that comes with us playing chicken in and around our own box. I just feel that we really have to be able to raise the tempo and the intensity every now and then to push the opponent back instead of lining up to press the goal kicks.
Agreed we need to increase our speed of passing at the back when trying to play out. We are much too slow at it which allows the press to reach the ball too often for comfort.
And what is it about this stadium that takes our selected keeper off us at the start??
Having dismantled Feyenoord in the second half, we’re sitting 3rd in the league table. A glance down to the bottom shows Malmo in 36th place propping up everyone having shipped 5 goals in 2 games with Robin Olsen between the sticks.
I wonder if Axel Tuanzebe looks at Ezri Konsa and wonders what could have been?
I do feel for him…
Fresh page up, this one’s done a lot of work.
